HYANNIS -  A burglar, who was out on bail and awaiting a hearing, was arrested Thursday after allegedly breaking into several homes in Hyannis.  According to a Barnstable police release, 22-year-old Ethan Woodward of 98 Center Street in Hyannis, was captured in the middle of a break-in spree in a Hyannis neighborhood.  Around 10:20 a.m., police were investigating two burglaries that had occurred in close proximity--one on Walnut Street, the other on Oak Street--when they were told a neighbor reported seeing a man looking in the rear slider of a home on Spruce Street.

Additional officers and two K9 units responded to the area.  During a search, officers heard a scream coming from a home on Lewis Road and saw a man fleeing the area.  Officers caught Woodward on Baxter Road, police said.

During an investigation, police learned that Woodward had broken into homes on Oak Street, Walnut Street and Spruce Street and had removed the screen and thrown a brook through a bedroom window on Lewis Road. Unbeknownst to Woodward, a woman was sleeping in the room and began to scream when the brick came through the window, police said. The woman was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with minor cuts from the shattered glass.

Woodward, according to police, left a trail of evidence linking himself to the break-ins including his bike behind the Spruce Street home, footprints in and around the houses and his cellphone in the Walnut Street home where he had startled a resident.

Woodward was transported to the Barnstable Police Station for booking at which time police discovered stolen jewelry on his person. Residents were able to identify the items stolen from their respective homes.

At 3:30 p.m., an elderly Pilgrim Road resident called to report that her home had been broken into while she was away. She too was able to identify jewelry stolen from her home, police said. The woman also told police that the burglar had moved her cordless phone. Detectives scrolled through the phone's call log and discovered that Woodward had phoned his girlfriend during the burglary, according to police.

In all, Ethan Woodward is alleged to have broken into six homes in Hyannis--all while on $5,000 cash bail for a May 2012 breaking and entering.  For that crime, Woodward was scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m., instead, he was in police custody.  Police charged Woodward with six counts of felony breaking and entering daytime, three counts of injury to personal property, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Woodward is currently being held on $10,000 bail and will be arraigned in Barnstable District Court. welcomes thoughtful comments and the varied opinions of our readers.
