Sturgis Charter Public School senior Lauren Clingan of Harwich was awarded the Student Leader of Merit Award at the InterLeader Student Leadership Forum on School Safety last Sunday.  The annual forum, sponsored by the Student Leadership Training Program (SLTP), was held at Nichols College in Dudley on February 3.

Each year SLTP brings together students, community leaders and teachers to discuss a specific issue facing student leaders. In light of the Newtown events, this year's topic was school safety.

Attendees explored all facets of school safety with a focus on two main questions, "what can we do" and "what should we do?"  The forum's finding will be published in a White Paper.

According to a release from Sturgis, Lauren has been active in SLTP for the past five years. She was one of twenty-four finalists for this year's Student Leader of Merit Award. Lauren received a scholarship, a special grant and an award from SLTP.

SLTP's mission is to empower student leaders. Read more about the organization here
