Cape Downwinders has called a rally for today from 1:00-2:00 PM at the 600 Rocky Hill Road, Plymouth in front of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station gate:
"THIS EMAIL MAY ACTUALLY SAVE OUR LIVES"
Protect our Communities!
Refuse to be a Radiation Refugee!
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Special Inspection Team returns for the final phase of the three part special inspection of the Pilgrim reactor due to serious and repetitive problems. For a second year, Pilgrim is one step from federally mandated shutdown. Groups will rally at the Pilgrim gate today to highlight the dangers and demand immediate shutdown to protect public safety.
A recent leaked email from a NRC seasoned special inspector reveals the unvarnished truth that the continued operation of the troubled Pilgrim threatens public safety. "We are observing current indications of a safety culture problem that a bunch of talking probably won't fix." concludes inspector Don Jackson in the email. Plymouth and area residents, Cape Downwinders, Citizens Awareness Network, and many other citizen groups demand action to protect our communities.
In addition, AGO Maura Healey, Governor Baker, Senator Markey, Senator Warren and the entire Congressional Delegation have requested the NRC hold a public meeting to address concerns raised in the email. The NRC has not agreed to do so. Cape Downwinder Don Barton said, "This kind of rebuke and inquiry from an entire congressional delegation is unprecedented and speaks to the gravity of a failed safety culture. Still no answers from the NRC."
Regarding the NRC email, Cape Downwinder William Maurer said, "After reviewing Pilgrim's safety performance history. I'm convinced more than ever that Pilgrim shut down is long overdue.Trust the observations in the leaked email. As NRC inspector Don Jackson stated, "We are observing current indications of a safety culture problem that a bunch of talking probably won't fix."
"NRC is mandated to protect the public health and safety not Entergy's bottom line. This email demonstrates Entergy's systemic mismanagement and incompetence as well as NRC's flagrant disregard for our safety," said Deb Katz, Executive Director of Citizens Awareness Network.
Cape Downwinder Director Diane Turco states, "Given the poor performance history coupled with this alarming email highlighting the dangers Pilgrim presents to the public, including Boston and the 5 million people in the 50 mile emergency planning zone, the only responsible outcome is to close Pilgrim to protect public safety."
Plymouth resident Love Albrecht Howard observed, "This email might actually save our lives".
