Yarmouth Police Department - Two Ongoing Scams

The old IRS scam plus a new one on "utility refunds"...

From the Yarmouth Police Department:

Scam Alert!

Please talk to your friends and loved ones, especially the elderly and more vulnerable, so they don't fall victim!

An officer received two different scam calls today!

The first was the never ending scam that the IRS is calling because your Social Security number was compromised and has been suspended. It's just not true!! It is tax time so it may increase the chances that someone falls victim to this!

The second scam call stated that an over payment had been made to a utility company because of a 3rd party supplier overcharge and they wanted to give a refund (yeah, right). Had the officer not managed to get the scammer to hang up first, the scammer would have tried to obtain bank account information in order to "provide a refund", and then promptly clean out the bank account. If you have any questions about your utility bill, hang up and call your utility company yourself.

Keep your hard earned money!
