We are very sad to announce the passing of Mary Lou Roberts, Ph.D., Cape Cod Today's wonderful, beloved, cyber security columnist. Dr. Roberts died on January 8, 2020 in her Eastham home at the age of 77.
Professor Roberts wrote frequent columns on various cyber security topics. She had a deep concern for senior citizens being victimized online. She often submitted extra columns to let her readers know about a new phishing scam or other online mischief.
Mary Lou's last column, submitted a few days before her death, was targeted at keeping readers' home networks safe after they obtained so-called "smart devices" over the holidays and added them to their home WiFi network.
Dr. Roberts had a wonderful talent for taking a very complex technical issue and presenting it in language that any non-tech-savvy person could understand.
Mary Lou Roberts was Professor Emeritus of Management and Marketing at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Retired from active teaching, she was the co-author of two active textbooks. In addition to Internet Marketing, Integrating Online and Offline Strategies, 4th ed. she was a co-author of Social Media Marketing: A Strategic Approach, 2nd ed.
Professor Roberts had written about personal data privacy issues since almost the beginning of the internet and remained active in online organizations that promote personal data protection. She made herself available to present programs on the subject to organizations across Cape Cod.
Mary Lou earned her Ph.D from the University of Michigan - Stephen M. Ross School of Business in 1971. She went on to teach Marketing and Management classes for many years at UMASS Boston and Harvard University Extension School. She was a senior author at Cengage Learning writing text books about Internet Marketing Strategies and Social Media Marketing. Outside of work, she loved to travel, read, support Mass Audubon, was a certified Master Gardener, and proud owner of her beloved rescue dog Reese.
Born in Clovis, NM in 1942, only child of the late Jim Henry and Eva Gertrude Mooney. Survived by her children, Greg Roberts and his wife Ernestina of San Diego, CA and Cara Lynn Mahoney and her husband Michael of Bolton, MA, and her seven grandchildren, Ryan, Owen, Benjamin, Sam, Nina, Cara, and Gregory, as well as extended family, amazing friends, and lively neighbors.
