As a proud board member of Sustainable Practices, a voter, and the petitioner in Sandwich of the Commercial Single-use Plastic Water Bottle Ban, I am asking that you support this important initiative.
Plastic is a human health and environmental hazard. This is a fact.
Why do we continue to purchase single use water bottles, when we know this to be true? Marketing.
Marketing has resulted in substituting municipal water for bottled water because we are marketed to believe it is better, cleaner, healthier, and more convenient. But is this true? All Towns on the Cape (and statewide,) that provide municipal water have to meet regulatory guidelines—Safe Drinking Water Act. These represent higher standards than those that exist for bottled water. What makes this consumption choice a conundrum is that the markup on bottled water is high and depending on the brand, it could be anywhere from 500 to 4000 times the cost of tap.
We need to protect Cape Cod its wildlife and beaches, after all, it’s our environment that makes the Cape a tourist destination. Significantly reducing convenience based water bottle consumption is a start and is consistent with protecting our health and the health and well-being of other life, birds, fish and other animals we coexist with.
Join me and others across the Cape in drawing attention to the adverse consequences of convenience consumption! Vote and support the Commercial Single-use Plastic Water Bottle Ban!
