Calling all veterans - Sustainable CAPE’s Project Gratitude is ramping up to connect veterans to farmers and local food. On Saturday February 29th at 5:30pm, join Sustainable CAPE and Delicious Living Nutrition for a FREE locally sourced dinner at the Orleans-Eastham Elks Lodge. Veterans and their families can enjoy shepherd’s pie and learn more about Project Gratitude, Sustainable CAPE’s newest program.
The mission of Project Gratitude is to thank veterans and their families for their service by connecting them with local farmers on the Cape & Islands. Veterans are gifted $10 in weekly Fruits & Vegetable tokens that they spend with farmers at participating farmers markets, boosting the harvesters’ income. The program runs at the Orleans Farmers Market all winter, with additional markets as the weather warms. By connecting veterans and farmers, a dialogue is created among those in service to our land, strengthening the health of our community.
“A recent study indicates that 27% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have experienced food insecurity, and roughly 1.7 million veterans live in low-income households,” states Francie Randolph, Founding Director of Sustainable CAPE. “By becoming an active member of Project Gratitude, every veteran can help to ensure the longevity of the program, support colleagues with limited access to healthy foods, and direct funds to local harvesters.”
Sustainable CAPE invites all veterans, regardless of income, to participate in Project Gratitude. Come for shepherd’s pie, freshly baked bread, soup, and a salad of fresh greens, as well as an additional prepared meal to take home. Learn more about this innovative farmers’ market program via a brief presentation. Randolph adds, “Project Gratitude is designed so that together we can work towards supporting veterans, farmers, our food supply and local economy – thereby creating well-being for all.”
