Whoever said this suspense novel would make a great movie was right. How about Clint Eastwood or Anthony Hopkins as Socrates or even Robin Williams as a long shot? Hillary Swank could play the girl.

Beston's natural masterpiece now available as unabridge audio

by Maggie Kulbokas

I am a fan of audiobooks.  In fact, I frequently bemoan my 14 minute commute because it's not even enough time for a chapter or two.

Carly Simon's Into White is destined to be another favorite by this beloved artist

By Maggie Kulbokas

Famed Martha's Vineyard resident Carly Simon returns to the music scene this year with a dreamy album entitled, "Into White".  The album, produced by Simon and Jimmy Parr, takes its name from a Cat Steven's song from the 1970s.

As the leaves change color, the air grows crisp and Halloween approaches, now is the perfect time to pick up the Cape Cod Haunted Map, a follow up to the very entertaining book, "Cape Encounters".

"Cape Encounters", written by Dan Gordon and Gary Joseph and published in 2004, was a riveting collection of true  Cape Cod ghost stories. The tales ranged from spooky to touching--all leaving the reader wanting more. See our  review here.

We've had a taste of spring the last few days with warm breezes and bright sunshine. Not true for the next few days with cool rain and overcast skies in our future. As you sit in front of your monitor on days like this, your mind may drift back home to your favorite comfortable chair. Perhaps a cup of tea and a warm throw. And, of course, a good book.

I worked along side the redoubtable Marcia Monbleau for almost a decade at The Cape Codder during the 1970's. She was then, and still remains, what the better crosswords define as a "oner".

I first heard about Marcia from her brother-in-law, Dr. Carl "Painless" Clapp, my family dentist. At that time Carl was also chairman of the town Conservation Commission, and his family had deep, local roots, despite their "Moody-Maine" origins.

A side from its obvious benefits--food can be a great source of joy. Gathering the food, cooking it and last, but not least, eating it can be a true celebration of flavors and combinations.

Nowhere is this more evident than in "The Joy of Shucking", a collection of recipes from the Wellfleet OysterFest. 2004 marks the first edition of this wonderful assembly of recipes each incorporating Wellfleet's fine oysters.

The popularity of books on CD is growing in leaps and bounds.  You can purchase audio books on sites such as audible.com or amazon.com among others. "The Legend of the Whydah" and "Sailors, Whalers & Witches" by Patrick Fitzhugh are two such CDs.

Cape Cod's fluctuating seasonal population is always up for discussion. Although, it seems those numbers do not include a fair amount of ghosts that also inhabit our historic sandbar. "Cape Encounters" by Dan Gordon and Gary Joseph is a collection of stories about that ghostly group.
