Wellfleet offers firewood recycling program, other ideas for the changing season

Fall brings color, compost and warm opportunities to Wellfleet
Town offers unique wood recycling program
While Fall on the Cape is a beautiful season of change, this does not mean that you should change your commitment to recycling. This colorful time of fallen leaves gives us the opportunity to recycle that color into next year’s flowers and vegetables by composting at home. Autumn is a great time to build compost piles in your yard that will be available for use next year.
Composting at home is simple, and requires little more than grass clippings, fallen leaves, and the occasional turning of a compost pile. You can mix different types of dead plant matter into a pile and let it sit. Your compost pile should be turned with a shovel or pitchfork once or twice a month.
Recycled firewood fuel, known as biomass, “is a renewable energy
resource that releases carbon dioxide which is often balanced by the
carbon dioxide captured in its growth. Using biomass fuel decreases our
dependence on expensive foreign oil and has the potential to decrease
household heating costs.” - Hillary Greenberg, Wellfleet’s Health and Conservation Agent
This Fall also brings the first winter chills, which can be remedied by burning of recycled firewood. This year Wellfleet residents can again enjoy the warmth of free firewood which is usually available at our transfer station. Contractors and other people and businesses that create excess wood can drop off their waste at the transfer station so it can be reused as firewood. Saving money and staying warm this Fall and Winter will be easy if you utilize this great program.
Hillary Greenberg, Wellfleet’s Health and Conservation Agent, says that the recycled firewood fuel, known as biomass, “is a renewable energy resource that releases carbon dioxide which is often balanced by the carbon dioxide captured in its growth. Using biomass fuel decreases our dependence on expensive foreign oil and has the potential to decrease household heating costs.”
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the firewood recycling program so that it can be successful. If you bring waste wood, it can only be accepted for the program if it is not treated or pressurized. Town Selectman Ira Wood says “It is important to burn clean wood, because there are significant health risks from burning treated or pressurized wood in your home.”
As the leaves fall and our town prepares for winter, it is important to continue reducing, reusing, and recycling your household and business wastes. Selectman Jerry Houk says “Recycling is the primary way to lower the cost of the town’s transfer station by offsetting disposal costs.” Recycling at Wellfleet’s transfer station is increasingly very important to ensure the sustainability of our town, state, and planet.

News from the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross

Holiday Mail for Heroes to Deliver One Million Greetings to Service Members and Families
As part of a national campaign, the American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is participating in a “Holiday Mail for Heroes” card drive. The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. are teaming up to send holiday cards to members of the military and their families in the United States and around the world. From Monday, November 2 until Monday, December 7, the public is invited to send holiday cards with their message of thanks and cheer to a special post office box.
The Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will then screen cards for hazardous materials, sort and package the cards, and deliver them to military bases, veteran’s hospitals and military hospitals during the holidays. “Holiday Mail for Heroes” continues the Red Cross tradition of service to the armed forces. Last year, 1.4 million cards were distributed.
Sending just one card is all it takes to make a difference by spreading holiday cheer and thanks to one of our nation’s heroes. There are currently 1.4 million active duty U.S. military men and women serving in our country and abroad. In addition, there are 24 million veterans in the U.S.
Holiday cards should be addressed and sent to:
Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456
Please be sure to affix adequate postage. Keep the salutation generic, such as: Dear Service member or Veteran. Do not include personal information and please do not send letters. If you’d like to send more than one card, please bundle them and mail them in a package. Cards must be received no later than December 8th (postmarked December 7th). Cards received after this date will be returned to senders. To help speed the sorting process and delivery of cards and notes before the holidays, please refrain from sending “care packages,” monetary gifts, using glitter or including any other inserts.
In order to make cards more meaningful to a wide variety of recipients, those sending cards are highly encouraged to use “Dear Service Member or Veteran” rather than specific language. We encourage the public to send holiday-neutral cards rather than religious-themed cards. For a full list of recommended guidelines and best practices, please visit Redcross.org/holiday mail. Cards are also available to print out from the website, along with messages from Red Cross National Celebrity Amy Grant.
The American Red Cross is a charitable organization - not a government agency - and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission. For more information about the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, visit the web site: cciredcross.org or call toll-free (508) 775-1540.
eCape spotlighted in Cape & Plymouth Business magazine

eCape, Inc. was recently spotlighted in the November 2009 issue of Cape & Plymouth Business magazine.
Julie Brooks, CEO of eCape, was asked to answer the question, "What traits give your business a competitive edge?" She answered:
"eCape's competitive edge over other website design and marketing companies comes down to two things: search engines and staff. Our local sites such as CapeCodTravel.com and CapeCodToday.com dominate Google, Bing, and Yahoo! organic search results for many local search terms, which in turn gives advertisers on these sites more business. No other local website design company can also give its clients advertising space on these high-traffic sites, which leads to instant, targeted traffic.
We're not a one-man show, limited to the time and talents of just one person. Our staff of 7 full-time employees, 3 interns, and 6 freelancers means that our clients benefit from the talents of many. This is why we can operate as a one-stop shop for all of a client's Internet marketing needs: website design, advertising on our local sites, search engine optimization, local search setup, Facebook and Twitter setup, email marketing, pay-per-click, and lots more.
Internet marketing changes so incredibly fast, it's difficult for clients to keep up with--that's why they rely on us to tell them what's real and what's hype. "

Social Media Expert and New York Times Best-Selling Author Chris Brogan Coming to Cape Cod
By Leslie Fishlock
We are so excited to announce that Chris Brogan, social media expert and best-selling author, and all-around nice guy, will be coming to town for an exclusive book signing and social media event! And we could not be more excited! The event is a fundraiser for Geek Girl Camp’s programs for women in need and transition, specifically tied to educational scholarships, computer training, providing laptops and other events and initiatives.
Chris Brogan, co-author of the New York Times best-seller, Trust Agents, will be in Hyannis, Cape Cod, MA on October 27th from 5-7pm to sign his new book as well as interact with local business people, techies and entrepreneurs on how to tap into the growing power of social media networks to build their brand’s influence, reputation and profits.
Brogan is president of New Marketing Labs, a new media marketing agency, and home of the Inbound Marketing Summit conferences and Inbound Marketing Bootcamp educational events. He works with large and mid-sized companies to improve online business communications like marketing and PR through the use of social software, community platforms, and other emerging web and mobile technologies.
In his new book, co-authored with Julien Smith, Brogan says that “social networks and personal connections have far more influence on consumers than your marketing messages ever will – unless your business knows how to harness them. In Trust Agents, we show you how to tap into the power of these networks to build your brand’s influence, reputation and profits.”
Brogan explains that “trust agents aren’t necessarily marketers or salespeople; they’re digitally savvy people who use the Web to humanize businesses using transparency, honesty, and genuine relationships. As a result, they wield enough online influence to build up or bring down a business’s reputation. This book will show you how to build profitable relationships with trust agents, or become one yourself.”

Cape Cod Healthcare to close Behavioral Health Services Urgent Care

Closure effective October 1, 2009
Cape Cod Healthcare announced today that it will close its outpatient Urgent Care Service, located at the Psychiatric Center of Cape Cod Hospital, effective, October 1, 2009.
The urgent care program, opened in 2003 to improve access to psychopharmacology services, has evolved to the point where it essentially increases no-show rates for psychiatric appointments and simultaneously increases drug-seeking activities.
“In essence,” said Ed Laroche, Executive Director, CCHC Behavioral
Health Services, “this program has unintentionally fragmented the
continuity and coordination of good psychiatric care.”
Staff safety has also become a concern. “In essence,” said Ed Laroche, Executive Director, CCHC Behavioral Health Services, “this program has unintentionally fragmented the continuity and coordination of good psychiatric care.”
“People who truly need urgent mental health help will continue to be treated in the emergency department and will become Cape Cod Hospital or Falmouth Hospital patients,” added Laroche.
At the same time, all of CCHC’s Behavioral Health Services outpatient services will be consolidated from the Whitcomb Pavilion on the campus of Cape Cod Hospital to the Cape Cod Human Services facility at 460 West Main Street in Hyannis. “This consolidation allows us to expand access to outpatient behavioral health services and better facilitate placing patients in appropriate settings for behavioral health treatment,” said Laroche. The state Department of Mental Health has reviewed the plan to close urgent care and consolidate outpatient services, and the DMH understands the need for it.
“People who need mental health care will have better access to services and programs at Cape Cod Healthcare,” said Laroche. “We continue to provide a robust array of mental health services for the community, including inpatient, partial hospitalization, outpatient, three locations for Cape Cod Human Services, a Psychiatric Assessment Team, and a Kids and Teens Assessment Center.

Six-week program begins September 22 at the Eastham Senior Center
Beacon Hospice and the Eastham Senior Center is offering The Daughters of Alzheimer’s, a six week support group for daughters who are lovingly caring for parents with Alzheimer’s.
The journey with Alzheimer’s begins with the diagnosis. The feelings of loss are immediate, and each person’s grief is unique. As members of the group share their common experiences, the fear and the confusion of this disease will give way to courage, clarity and perhaps even a sense of humor will show up. Living with Alzheimer’s is a difficult experience for the family, but it can be a meaningful and healing experience.
The group will use storytelling and writing as tools in the art of self-care as you face the daily experience of caretaking a loved one.
This group is open to the entire Cape Cod Community.
Group will be facilitated by Jackie Powers, MSW LCSW, Beacon Hospice Bereavement Coordinator.
Pre-registration is requested to insure ample literature for all attendees. To register, contact Jackie Powers at 508-778-1622 or jpowers@beaconhospice.com. Harbors of Hope is the bereavement program of Beacon Hospice that offers support to the Cape Cod Community from Bourne to Provincetown.
All services of the Harbors of Hope Program are free to the Cape Cod Community.
The Eastham Senior Center is located at 1405 Nauset Road in North Eastham.
