When life hands you lemons you have got to make lemonade. I remember when my grandfather came with us on vacation the year he came to live with us. It was not one of the better remembrance for my mother. Grandpop was not a happy man, and could not understand vacations and was there not on request as he came to live with us after his sister asked him to leave their house in Florida. Mom was beside herself that he had come to live with us, Grandpop was a very bitter man having lived through the depression, loosing two homes, lost his only son at age 9 and finally lost his wife to cancer in her late 50s early 60s. He felt the need to one up everyone on doing anything so if we went out to dinner, he always insisted on paying. Normally this is a good thing right? But it was the attitude in which he did it. This carried over the summer he came with us to the Cape. He would never come to the beach with us and would site in the driveway of the cottage, read the paper that he would walk to Paces Place and get every morning and pick up and smoke his cigarettes. On several occasions he would not come with us when we went places and for Mom it was almost a relief. But we made the best of it, we tried to encourage him to join us, and from time to time he would at least take walks with us. It was a mixed year that year 1975, It was the last summer he was alive, and passed away the following year before summer was in full swing. I look back and wish I would have taken more time to be with him. Find out more about his summers, what he was going through. I remember us playing the card game War at the eating table in the cottage. Sometimes we don't realize what we have until we loose it. We made it through that summer and it's roller coaster of issues. But I hope through it all somewhere Grandpop could see all the good that was going on around him. The peaceful shores of the Cape, the nature that was all around. I just hope that we did what we were suppose to do in trying to include him in things even if he did not understand it or have a way of showing he cared because of his past. This summer, if you have someone you need to bring along on vacation with you that was not expected or they necessarily appreciate. Step into their shoes and be as inclusive as possible and get inside their lives as much as possible as you never know how long you have left with them. Hope to see you this coming summer right here on old Cape Cod.
Welcome to small business report, someplace that I have not listed before but has been a staple in the West Harwich for some 50 years. Those who live there or shopped there already know who I am talking about. Yankee Doodle Shop located 181 Main St, West Harwich or online at http://www.yankeedoodleshop.com
. and on facebook. What do they have? Well in their woods:We offer all types of wonderful country accessories—unfinished, stained, or painted woodenware, glass, and metalware. In other words that have just about anything you could want to decorate you cottage or home. Go check them out an take something home that can grace your walls and tables that will put a smile on your face every time you look at it. Go and check them and find a new happy place to shop.
Another small business in Harwich is Cape Cod Wind & Weather located at 189 Route 28 Unit 1, West Harwich, also on Facebook. This is a small business that is big into wind and weather gages, and just about anything weather related you could want. Also Tide clocks and fishing barometers. And you thought you knew it all, when it came to this field. If you are growing plants you want to know the humidity or keep track of how much rain we are getting, or what are the wind speeds in your area. So whether you are a novice and just want to stay on top of things or are into it for business reasons or a storm chaser or other reasons they can meet your needs. Last but not least, one of my favorite places to eat Sunday Brunch on the whole Cape is Brax Landing Restaurant located at 705 Route 28, Harwich Port or on line at www.braxrestaurant.com
or facebook. On top of great food the view overlooking Saquatucket Harbor. But don't think they only do Brunch that is only a Sunday thing. They serve both lunch and dinner as well and have a wicked awesome menu and dinning both inside and outside when weather permitting. If you want great food with a great view, you can not go wrong in my book with Brax Landing Restaurant.
Welcome folks and hope you are staying warm. Ok I have a question for you all, who turned off the heat and left the area? This weather is getting a bet weary if you ask me. I thought we we going to come out of the cold about 2 weeks ago and all we got was that one weekend then back to the blankets and wet weather gear. I understand that April showers bring May flowers, but with some places still on the boarder of frost warnings for this week, now that is a little much. But it is what it is and life must go on. I wish I had some big warm sunny revelation about anything, but this week has been about as quiet as can be. Now I understand some of you out there are saying we need to enjoy our land and sea in all weather experiences and although that is true, seeing the dear children coming in from the cold is just makes me feel sad. But we make the best of it and we have another 2 weeks of school visits from the children. I'm not sure who enjoys these more? Them or me. But the bus tour visits are picking up again as some of our snowbirds have started to come back. So things are slowly picking up but I think the next push will come mid-May then after Memorial Day. Sorry there is not more to talk about, the light tower is in good shape the beacon is burning bright and we have been able to give Foggy a break. May we be there if you need us whether on land in the air or on the sea but we pray you never do. Have a great and wonderful especially if you can do it right here on old Cape Cod, and look forward to seeing you soon.
Well another day and another cocktail to try. Again if you have not picked up on the theme this year it is all about to the bikini. So with May not upon us time to break out the Bikini Wax. Now with all cocktails for every name there are at least a half dozen concoctions. So as I say many times, if you see the recipe I have offered and you find it someplace else, trust me, look long enough you will find it several more times and thus I take no credit for the recipe and give no credit either. Which came first the chicken or the egg? Well ? Ok so with all that, have fun with this recipe and enjoy it responsibly, I need all you as readers for a good while longer. Now on with the show and a great summer time cocktail.
This months recipe: Bikini Wax Cocktail
