Who Beats Who, Where, When, And How Much By...
There is no Cape Cod team ranking in the Boston Globe top 20. The closest we have are Duxbury and Plymouth South, across yonder bay.
it wasn't that long ago that Cape Cod was running wild on Massachusetts football. Even itty-bitty Upper Cape Tech won a Super Bowl, in their second season with a team. Those days are long ago and far away.
With no team looking Super this season, fotball on Cape Cod now becomes a fierce regional thing. When Barnstable is looking ahead to a power like St. John's Prep, the traditional Falmouth game is a minor affair. When Barnstable isn't a state power, the Falmouth game is again a kill-or-be-kill affair.
While the season is very young, it is also very short. They changed the scheduling and playoff formats, and that only gives a town so much time to make an impression.
Here's what's what:
Nauset at Falmouth (-3), 7 PM
This one looks very close on paper, but we'll give the home team the edge.... just not by that much.
Marshfield at Plymouth North (-7), 7 PM
Marsh Vegas is a struggling program that needs a lot of luck to not finish a 2 game Plymouth stretch down a combined 70-20.
Sandwich at #15 Plymouth South (-10), 7 PM
Sammich is 0-2 and has all the lesser features of a punching bag. I like the Sammich, at least better than 10 points.... even if 14 of them come against South's JV.
Pope John Paul II at St. Clement (-8), 7 PM
If PJP2 think they are the Cape's best team, they will have a tall order proving it against a Medford Catholic School who put 52 up on whoever Mystic Valley is. The Pope is banging out 42.5 ppg.
Wareham at Seekonk (-4), 7 PM
?ham travels real far and gets beaten up real bad.
Old Rochester at Bourne (+10), 7 PM
I'm not the MIAA commish or anything, but I just want it on the Internet somewhere that Bourne shouldn't schedule home games when 5000 people will be in town for the Scallop Festival. Bourne is a double digit home 'dog because they are 0-2 this season and their +/- is 98-21. If they can somehow get the game started while OR is stuck in traffic, they could get spotted a few TDs early. On the plus side, we hear that Tom Hanks is in town.
Fairhaven at Greater New Bedford (-7), 7 PM
Run-GNB is 2-0, and Fairhaven lost 45-0 last week.
Taunton at Durfee (+6), 7 PM
Aside from Marblehead and Athol, no school west of Bourne High needs a new name worse than Durfee.
Barnstable at #18 BC High (-6), 7 PM
A bad play away from being state champs, Barney started the year off poorly, getting mauled by D-Y. Things don't look much better this week.
Weston at Carver (+10), 7 PM
The Weston kids are going to be thrilled with the exciting ride down Rte 58 to Carver High. Carver gives up 10 at home, and it could be 20.
Oliver Ames at Pembroke (+6), 7 PM
Easton (that OA moniker is fooling me not) is too much for Pemby to handle.
Martha's Vineyard at Randolph (-3), 6 PM
MV is getting no love from the spread after laying down for 60 points.
Middleboro at Norton (-5), 7 PM
St. Joseph's Prep at Monomoy (-1), 7 PM
It should be a lovely ride from Brighton to Monomoy during a Friday rush hour. If the Monomoy band doesn't play the Jaws theme, someone should slap the tuba guy. I blame him alone, as he should argue for more tuba-driven songs.
Blue Hills at Upper Cape (+4), 1 PM
The UCT kids will be all stuffed with scallops from the night before, and will be essentially useless.
Blue Hills, 20-7
Scituate at Whitman-Hanson (-5), 1:30 PM
WH slaughtered some Catholic school or whatever last week, and is thinking big as they eye up the coastal kids. Inland teams from the South Shore always resent the waterfront kids, and usually play hard against them.
Minuteman at Cape Cod Tech (+9), 1 PM
CCTech is down 83-18 this season, and things are looking down. Minuteman, as you might have guessed, is from Lexington.
LAST WEEK: 12-5
9/19 8:25 ET At Philadelphia -3.5 Kansas City 50.5
Philly is killing it this year, and they go up against their old coach tonight.
