Barnstable Is Back; Nauset, Bourne, Mashpee Win...
Barnstable, in one huge upset, reclaimed Cape Cod's status as a top region for local football. Nauset is also undefeated, and one of our winless teams broke the ice.
As far as the Boston Globe rankings go, Barnstable is tops on the Cape at #20. Nauset is 28. Both will be going up mightily when the new rankings are announced next week. Dennis-Yarmouth is #61, Falmouth is 89th, and Pope John Paul II is 91st.
Other heavyweights in SE Massachusetts are #6 Mansfield, #7 Bridgewater-Raynham, #9 Brockton, #12 Duxbury, #13 King Phillip, #15 Plymouth South, #18 North Attleboro, #23 Attleboro, #27 Oliver Ames, #33 Taunton, #37 BC High, #39 and Lakeville's own Apponoquet. #44-51 with the exception of #49 are Old Rochester, East Bridgewater, New Beffuh, Cardinal Spellman, Scituate, Hingham, and Seekonk. #54-57 are Foxboro, Quincy, D-R and Cohasset. Abington is #72, and #78, 79 and 82 are Dartmouth, Silver Lake and Marsh Vegas. Weymouth is #90 and Rockland is the last semi-local town at #97.
If your town isn't on that list, you may want to get some Creatine or something and mix it into their Kiddy Flakes every morning.
Onto the scores:
Barnstable 15, Xaverian 14
Barnstable suffered a loss earlier this season to Dennis-Yarmouth that looked to doom their Super Bowl hopes. The only way they could sneak back into the discussion is if they prevailed against the top team in the state... Xaverian.
Dereck "Enormous Set" Pacheco, who had gagged on an extra point earlier in the evening, kicked the game-winning field goal for Barnstable. Dereck redeemed himself in the highest manner possible, and the whole Cape is better for it.
Barnstable, who came within a hair of taking the Super Bowl last season (they beat the eventual winner in the regular season, but lost a rematch in the playoffs), was ranked #20 going into this game. Xaverian was ranked #1, had just destroyed (49-13 over Bridgewater-Raynham, who had just choked out mighty Duxbury) the best team in the region, and had beaten fearsome Everett.
Kristian Lucashensky threw 2 touchdowns for Barnstable, who improve to 2-1. They play New Bedford next week. No, they don't get another crack at D-Y this season.
That mattered little to Barnstable. They had a simple mission: Get into the playoffs. In order to do so, they had to beat the best team in the state. Therefore...
I don't think this will move Barnstable to #1 in the rankings. That honor will go to Natick or Mansfield. Barnstable will soar in the rankings, however. The question is, how high will that be?
Barnstable, despite that glorious win, may not even be the best team on Cape Cod right now. The reason for that is....
Nauset 21, Dennis-Yarmouth 20
Nauset moves to 3-0 with a close shave against D-Y. This game was important for many reasons.
- Nauset is undefeated, something that not many Cape teams can say.
- Nauset beat D-Y, who owned regional power Barnstable to a 37-9 tune as the season opened. They in turn got pinned by Plymouth North the next week, and it looked like Cape Cod wouldn'y have a powerful team.
- Nauset can say, with a perfectly straight face, that they beat the team (D-Y) that beat the team (Barnstable) that beat the team (Xaverian) that was widely considered to be the best in the state and most likely New England.
- Nauset has a few tough matchups left if they wish to go undefeated. Plymouth South is 15th ranked, Durfee has a large and diverse talent pool, Marsh Vegas (next week's opponent) looks a lot better this season, and D-Y will be seeking revenge in the Thanksgiving game.
Plymouth South 21, Plymouth North 14
Dylan Oxsen scored on both offense and defense to establish primacy in his hometown. He had 150 rushing yards and a pick-six.
South is ranked #15 in the state. They play D-Y, Nauset and Falmouth before rematching P-North this turkey day.
Bishop Feehan 9, Martha's Vineyard 6
Yes, the bad guys won. However, it took 3 overtimes before Feehan eked out a field goal victory. Martha's Vineyard was unable to beat the Bishop.
Marty missed a field goal at the end of what turned out to be a scoreless regulation time. All points were scored in the overtime period.
Dighton-Rehoboth 51, Wareham 6
D-R's coach must have got some poor-quality cocaine in Onset once, because he had his boys tear up the ass of the poor Wareham kids.
Wareham is 0-3, and has been outscored 127-36 this season.
Bourne 30, Case 14
Tyler Benotti and and Chad Marsh each had a pair of touchdowns to give Bourne their first win of the season over hapless Case. Marsh ran for 267 yards.
Bourne improves to 1-3.
Mashpee 14, Carver 8
Mashpee had a rare brother-to-brother touchdown by the Carpenter boys, who I hope grow up to start a roofing business together.
Cohasset 42, Hull 12
This game is a bit far from our coverage area, but we're sort of directly across the bay from them, and they are coastal. Cohasset whipped Hull like they no longer had an amusement park.
Norwell 34, Monomoy 8
Monomoy's bid at an unbeaten season ended in crushing fashion last night, as Norwell gave it to them Old Country Way.
Your faithful columnists here at the Sports Desk were big-ballin' and shot callin' to the tune of 7-2 so far this week, with several games scheduled or in-progress today. We're 36-22 YTD.
