High School Football Regional Semifinals, Consolation Round Picks

D-Y, Barnstable, Both Plymouths Still In It To Win It...

The state's new playoff format is in full swing as November edges forward. The Cape still has a couple of teams that can win The Gobbler for their respective divisions. There are also a slew of consolation games, and we'll tell you all about anything local.

I like the consolation games, as- because of the random breakdown of the tournament- we mix things up a bit, and teams play some non-traditional rivals. It's always good to have some Fresh. All of the columnists here at the Sports Desk feel the same way.

You can find out the times and venues for any of the games here. I don't want to make a typo and screw up someone's plans.

As always, this column is For Entertainment Purposes Only.

Division 1 South Playoffs

#9 Bridgewater-Raynham at #10 Attleboro (+1)

Attleboro plays in a very tough conference (in their only loss, they piled up 42 points on powerful Mansfield), and B-R didn't play a single chump this year. The game should be a pleasure to watch, and maybe only my BSU credentials lead me to choose the way I do.

Bridgewater-Raynham, 21-17

#15 BC High at #4 Xaverian (-7)

They played earlier this season, and X threw a shutout. Things probably haven't changed much since.

X, 21-7

Division 2 South Playoffs

#11 Needham at #3 Mansfield (-6)

Needham routed my beloved Duxbury, dominating them as the game got late. Mansfield might be the best team in the state.

Mansfield, 34-27

#2 Natick at #6 Barnstable (+3)

Barney is a home 'dog against Flutie High School. Barnstable has been the underdog before, and- when the actual game was played- someone wasn't the top team in the state any more. Not to look ahead or anything, but Barnstable/Mansfield should be a war.

Barnstable, 17-16

Division 3 Southeast Playoffs

Dartmouth at #19 Plymouth South (-7)

Dartmouth is South's first South Coast test, and you can probably pencil Dylan Oxsen in for 3 TDs right now... more if he gets angry.

PS, 28-17

Plymouth North at Dighton-Rehoboth (+1)

D-R can and does pile up points... but they haven't beaten anybody good. The possibility of Plymouth seeping the South Coast and a Plymouth vs Plymouth game for the SE title is too juicy to pass up.

PN, 21-19

Division 4 South Playoffs

Holliston at Westwood (-2)

Westy won a 84 point defensive struggle against Holly earlier this year. Winner gets D-Y (or whoever beats D-Y).

Westwood, 34-31

Apponequet at Dennis-Yarmouth (-7)

D-Y beat Barnstable, which is very impressive. App is a South-Coast regional school who has only lost to Dartmouth. D-Y is the biggest test they get this year, and I'm banking on it not going to well for them.

D-Y, 24-10

Division 5 South Playoffs

East Bridgewater at Old Rochester (-3)

Old Rochester has barely been challenged this season, but EB never plays any chumps. This is OR's first game in a while off the South Coast.

EB, 21-20

Cardinal Spellman at Abington (+1)

I personally watched the Cardinal put 50 straight points up on Bourne, and I also personally watched Abby hang with not-to-be-played-with Duxbury. The only team that beat Spellman was undefeated and unchallenged powerhouse Bishop Fenwick.

Spellman, 30-17

Division 6 South Playoffs

Blue Hills at Cohasset (-10)

Cohasset is a scoring machine, while Blue Hills is more of a defensive squad. Someone is going to break, and I generally roll South Shore.

Cohasset, 34-10

Millis-Hopedale at Diman (-7)

Both of these teams knocked Cape Cod (Upper Cape Tech and Mashpee) out of a very winnable bracket.

Diman, 20-10

Other Local Games

Brockton at Framingham (+6)

Framingham got tooled up a bunch of times this season. They won't have much better luck with Club Homeboy, who at least suffered a better quality set of Ls.

Brockton, 24-6

Foxboro at Wareham (+10)

Foxboro only lost to powerful teams, while ?ham at least won't have to travel far.

Foxy Bro, 34-7

Pembroke at Sandwich (-4)

I used to live on the eastern and western borders of Pembroke at one point in my life, and I border Sammich now. Toiugh call. Each team has only beaten one other school this year, but Sammich beat Falmouth twice.

Sammich, 10-7

Newton North at New Bedford (+1)

This is a good rich kid/poor kid game. Look for it to get rowdy if New Beffuh loses, and look for it to get rowdier if Betty wins.

NN, 19-17

Dover-Sherborn at Greater New Bedford (+3)

Even if Run-GNB loses, they can at least laugh at the lengthy bus ride the D/s kids have.

D-s, 28-17

Martha's Vineyard at Fairhaven

Fairhaven is one of several schools who only have won 3 games, all against a Bourne/Case/Wareham trio. Marty may be one step above that.

MV, 17-13

Bourne at Case (-7)

Bourne had one win in the regular season... 30-14, over Case. Case is probably a field goal tougher in this game.

Bourne, 27-14

Falmouth at Whitman-Hanson (+3)

Whitman-Hanson has about one more chance to beat someone, and Falmouth is ripe for the picking.

WH, 7-6

#20 King Phillip at Marshfield (+1)

Vegas defends the Marsh against a strong KP squad.

Marsh Vegas, 20-19

Taunton at Durfee (+3)

If Dufee wins, the coach is taking the kids to Popeye's, over near the Borden House. Unfortunately...

Taunton, 17-13

Old Colony at Monomoy (-1)

Mons started 2-0, and then surrendered about 41 pp over 6 losses. I think the long ride leaves the OC primed for a stomping.

Monomoy, 13-3

Bristol-Plymouth at Nantucket (+3)

The boat ride gets someone important seasick, you mark my words, landlubber!

Nantucket, 17-12

#12 Duxbury at Wellesley (+6)

Duxbury just got slapped silly by Needham, and Wellesley doesn't want to listen to Needham kids bragging all winter.

Needham, 21-20

Silver Lake at Sharon

Sharon has only won 2 games this year, but their losses all were to really good squads. Whoever made their schedule must really hate Jews or something. Redemption comes Saturday.

Sharon, 21-10

Mashpee at Upper Cape (+1)

Upper Cape won a Super Bowl last year, but slapping around a neighbor will have to be good enough this year.

UCT, 24-20

Washington at Minnesota

Look for Minnesota to continue falling apart... and if the Skins are going to make a run, they'd better start now.

Washington, 24-10
