The Hyannis Youth & Community Center is ready for the Fall! We are gearing up for some end of season volleyball action this week and some favorite seasonal events! The Barnstable Youth Commission in partnership with the Barnstable Police Department Community Impact Unit will be holding a Community Substance Abuse Prevention Forum on Wednesday, October 24th at 6:30 PM in the Shepley Room at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center. Friday, October 26th 4:30-7:00 PM is the annual HYCC Halloween Carnival & Skate! Test drive your costume and have fun with your friends and family. There will be a costume contest, fun games with prizes off the ice, plus spooky music, props and lights for ice skating fun! Bring your own skates or rent a pair of our brand new ones! We have all sizes from Tots to Adults in both figure skates and hockey skates. See you then!
Fall program registration continues for Barnstable residents only until Wednesday, September 12th when Non-residents can begin to register for programs that still have openings. Although most still have space available, here are a list of full programs: Babysitting, Lego Robotics, Mountain Biking and Beginner Pickleball. All programs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and minimum participation requirements are needed in order for the program to run. Coming up next weekend, from Friday, September 14th – Sunday, September 16th, the Yarmouth Ice Club is hosting the US Figure Skating National Solo Dance Final Competition at the HYCC which will bring more than 500 competitors of all ages and skill levels, their coaches and families to the Hyannis area for practice and 28 competitive solo dance performances in pattern, shadow, and combined categories to thematic programs such as Swing Dance, Fox Trot, Rhythm and Blues and various Waltzes. The weekend is sure to delight all who attend with the beautiful costumes, music and pageantry combined with artistic precision and athleticism of figure skating! The Barnstable Recreation Aquatics Staff again took first place in the Non-Surf Division for the tenth consecutive year during the 44th Annual Cape Cod Lifesaving Competition which was held at Craigville Beach earlier this month.
As we approach the Labor Day Weekend and school begins next week, the Barnstable Recreation Division and the Hyannis Youth & Community Center are ready and looking forward to handling a number of activities next week that will serve the purpose for residents and visitors of all ages! On Monday, September 3rd the Hyannis Youth & Community Center will be closed for the Labor Day Holiday. Craigville Beach will be staffed with lifeguards and the bathhouses at all beaches will be open. Beach sticker sales at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center end at noon on Saturday, September 1st, signifying the unofficial end of summer. Gate attendants will be at public beach parking lots to serve visitors and residents should be sure their vehicle has a valid beach parking permit when parking at the Resident Beaches. The State Primary Election is Tuesday, September 4th and residents who are registered in Precincts 8, 9 and 13 will vote in the HYCC Gymnasium; polls are open from 7 AM to 8 PM. The summer sports leagues and camps have all wrapped up this week and now we make way for the return of favorites in September like Miss Lori's Playgroup, Adult Game Room time while the kids are in school and Indoor Pickleball on Monday and Wednesday mornings, starting in October! There are some new programs being offered like Instructional Pickleball for Beginners and Skills Development at the newly renovated courts in Osterville on Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting September 18th. Fall Program Registration will take place starting Wednesday, September 5th at 8:45 AM for Barnstable Residents. Non-Residents can begin signing up on Wednesday, September 12th. Recently, the Hyannis Youth & Community Center had a great visit from Olympics Silver Medalist and local resident, Paul Wylie who joined participants in a pop-up skating clinic. The Cape Cod Skating Club organized and hosted this event just before their Seaside Classic Competition last weekend, and invited competitive figure skaters to join them in a fun-filled afternoon of working on their skills. We look forward to another opportunity to host this and many other skating events! Happy Fourth of July Week! There is so much to do and see around all of the villages of Barnstable this week with Independence Day on Wednesday, you can expect to be busy for the entire week and you don't even have to leave town! You can find details on all of the festivities here.

After completing an extensive maintenance project this spring, the Hyannis Youth & Community Center is now fully operational and open for summer business! Beach Parking Permits are being sold in the Main Lobby every day (Monday-Saturday 9AM-4PM, Sundays and Holidays 9AM–Noon) and summer program registrations are available for walk-up Monday-Friday 8:30AM-4PM (on line registrations are available for existing households any day, any time by clicking on the registration button at www.townofbarnstable.us/hycc). Public skating is offered almost every day and we also have function rooms and ice available to rent. For availability please contact Joe Izzo at 508-790-6345 x103 or [email protected]. The Lyndon P. Lorusso Youth Center is open seven days a week and available to HYCC Annual Members and $5 Day Pass holders; offering access to the indoor walking track, game room and computer lab as well as scheduled open gym time. Annual memberships are just $20 for Barnstable residents ($40 for non-residents) and can be purchased from any staff member or through the online registration portal. When HYCC members sign up or renew, they are given two free transferrable passes to scheduled public skating sessions (subject to availability) and a free guest pass for the youth center so you can bring a friend. The value of all of these coupons exceeds the cost of the resident membership fee! Additionally, new and renewing members are automatically entered in a monthly drawing with prizes from local businesses that support the Hyannis Youth & Community Center enterprise. This month, the prize is a gift card for a family bowling experience at Ryan Amusements!

Also on SATURDAY, JUNE 16th 11 AM-1 PM inside the Hyannis Youth & Community Center (Rain or Shine) is a Kick-Off event for the Summer Eats program. Stop by and have a bite to eat with the organizers and get information about all of the summer meal programs across the Cape! The Hyannis Youth & Community Center is again partnering with St. Mary’s Church in Barnstable to offer free Lunch and Snacks for all children age 18 and under every Monday thru Friday, June 25, 2018—August 24, 2018. Lunch will be served each day from 12:00-12:45 PM and snack will be served from 3:00-3:30 PM. We will also offer a Movie on Tuesdays from 12:30pm to about 2:30pm (ending time will depend on movie length) and a Fun With Food Activity on Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 PM (no activity on August 9th). The Kennedy Rink will be back on line next week after some extensive work on the refrigeration plant to get the ice making system optimally efficient in time for the busy summer season! There are a number of hockey clinics and camps for all ages and a high school league that begins the last week of June, running through mid-August. Although fees for public skating and skate rentals are separate from the affordable HYCC Membership program, did you know when you sign up for your annual membership, you will receive coupons good for free admission to two public skating sessions and one that is good for a guest pass or public skating session? SAVE THE DATES! On Friday night, June 15, 2018 the Annual Father / Daughter Dance will take place in the Gymnasium from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. This year's luau theme is sure to be a lot of fun! Children and their adult companion can purchase their tickets at the door. The fee is $20/couple and $5 for each additional child. All children will receive a lei necklace, refreshments, games with prizes and dancing to music with a live deejay. On Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the annual Bike Rodeo will take place in the parking lot outside the Hyannis Youth & Community Center. There is no rain date so the event will be cancelled should there be inclement weather (annoucnements will be made on the HYCC Facebook page and web site. Along with the beloved obstacle course, there will be bicycle safety inspections thanks to Sea Sports and appearances by members of the Barnstable Police and Hyannis Fire Departments with fun games with prizes from local businesses and more! Admission is free! At the same time that day, inside the Hyannis Youth & Community Center a kickoff event for the "Summer Eats" free meals program for youths age 1-18 will take place (rain or shine). The HYCC and Barnstable Recreation Division, in conjunction with St. Mary's Church, the YMCA of Cape Cod, the Dennis-Yarmouth School District and the Church of the Holy Spirit will be on hand with information about all of their local free "Summer Eats" Food Program locations as well as giving out free lunches and family friendly activities.
