"Nature is an Awesome Force" GW Bush

"Nature is an Awesome Force"  President George W. Bush
Yes, that is a quote from our Commander in Chief.  It was said during his speech in New Orleans about a week after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.  In blue shirt against blue background (Reminiscent of the Magic Kingdom at Disney...replete with a statue of Andrew Jackson on a fiery steed), Bush added that, the "Armies of Compassion" were coming to help.  He also said, "God welcomes us to a house not made with hands," and closed with the very poignant sentiment that, "Plymouth, Jamestown and Chicago are fine, we always come back."

Deja Vu All Over Again

We on Cape Cod watched again (on TV) as Gulf Coasters fled their homes, grabbing everything that would fit in a car, a camper, on a motorbike or a bus.

Hurricane Rita, the storm that could not make up her mind where to land (Houston? Galveston?),  finally decided.   After teasing us for two days while swirling around in the Gulf, Port Arthur and Lake Charles on the eastern fringe of the Texas coast finally caught her eye.

Gridlock on Texas roads stopped the state cold this past Thursday and Friday.  Between Houston and Galveston, and all small towns in between, over two million people sat in gasless un-aircondtioned cars (some for up to 30 hours) with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees.  Feeling like sitting ducks if Rita decided to hit before they could get to shelter, some abandoned their cars and just began walking.

This time buses were there for all who needed them, but, sadly one bus, carrying senior citizens caught fire and exploded on the highway, killing over twenty-five people.
The rest of the northeastern coast of Texas hunkered down and out of the way of the monster storm.  In Texas City, Texas, a woman who owns a cat sanctuary refused to leave her 300 cats behind, and stayed with them, depsite much urging. I hope to see her face on the news later today.

Incidentally, Texas got lucky!  The actual eye hit in a marshland/wetland/bayou area where people were smart enough not to live!

And New Orleans took another  hit.  The outer bands of this huge storm opened patched levees and once more let water fill the city. Beleaguered Louisiana Governor Blanco (of  Hurricane Katrina fame),  wisely asked for evacuation of the city on Wednesday.  But by Thursday, when it was evident some people would not leave, she said "...If you decide to stay, at least mark your social security number on your arm in indelible ink."
That made perfect sense to me.  At least they would who to call if they found you.

Global warning vs. terrorAttention Please: Global Warming Arriving at Gate 17

All of this furious weather has some people wondering, "Why is Mother Nature suddenly being so mean?  Suddenly?  Well, shame on Her.  It certainly couldn't be anything we did.  Could it?
Maybe we're all just paying more attention to dear Mother ... since she turned her recent wrath towards us.  How dare she!  This is America, where major catastrophes and other natural disasters are simply, "Not allowed" to happen!

So what if Indonesia, China, Switzerland, Romania and Germany have recently had the worst floods in their histories.  That's them.  Not us!  Who cares if England and Ireland have seen the strangest weather in years.  They're not us!  Everyone around the world is worried about changing climate, pollution and Global Warming.  But not us.  We're America!
Ironically, waterlogged Venice and Amsterdam seem to be the only two cities saying to Mother Nature:  "Hello, we hate you, but we have been expecting you."  Hmm, what do they know that we don't?

Does it really take a hammer to our heads (Thwap) before we can accept being part of a Global Community called EARTH, and that "those things," that always seem to happen "to those people," are now happening here ... to us?

Cape Cod had a little "Wake Up" call last week.  Some outer bands of Hurricane Ophelia caused bad flooding on many parts of the Cape.  People were actually walking around in waist deep water in Sagamore (Front page/Cape Cod Times 9/16),  and parts of Sandwich and the Scusset Beach Campsite were actually evacuated!  If this is what a Tropical Storm (100 miles away) can do,  imagine what a Category Five would be like?  Hurricane Bob would be remembered as a lovely autumn shower.

Disasters don't discriminate.  America is as good a place as any for one.  This is one planet.  Cape Cod is part of Massachusetts, which is part of the USA, which is part of North America which is one of five continents that make up EARTH!  And we are all little Earthlings. Every one of us.

Kurt Vonnegut said on his recent book tour, "Earths immune system is trying to get rid of us humans."  He may be right.

The Emperor Has no Clothes

Just because we have a President and a majority in Congress who don't agree with scientists (HA!) doesn't mean Global Warming isn't real.  They could say the Pentagon has nine sides, but that would not make it so.  Not even if Pat Robertson and Justice Scalia backed them up (Although a few might believe them just because they said it with conviction).

But no matter what they say, we still share our nuclear waste, toxic sludge, oil spills and fossil fuel emissions with everyone else on the planet.  And where do you think that stuff ends up when we're through playing with it?  It goes into the air, the soil and the water (and our lungs).  It even clogs up the atmosphere (Has anyone seen my Ozone?  I seem to have misplaced it).

The byproducts of industry produce waste (The byproducts of human sexuality produce the same thing, but we call them people).  There are more people on the planet than we used to have (have you noticed?),  and it is not because of Area 51 or a Martian invasion.  We just keep begetting more and more of those little Earthlings. It's habit forming.

And the more people we need to feed and clothe and sell things to, the more industry we create and, in turn, the more waste we produce.  Most of this waste transforms into HEAT, which then ends up warming our air and our water (oceans).  And warmer oceans cause icecaps and glaciers to melt, which in turn raises water levels, thus creating "wetter" and more severe storms with bigger tidal surges.  This is NOT rocket science folks.  Even I understand it, and I can't even balance my checkbook!

And now, as third world nations awaken... some of their HEAT is coming at us too.  It's getting pretty warm out there.  With so many people (and so many more to come if Bush gets the Supreme Court he wants and women don't even have a "morning after" pill to take with their "morning after" coffee) what will we do?

The Emperor may be naked, but do we have our pants on right?

Get Our of the Kitchen

A recent combined study by the Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) and NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Agency), found that Global warming is not just happening, but  happening faster than we thought.  Thomas Knutson, head of the GIT group said, "A sharp increase in intense storms is predicted,"  and NOAA spokesman Peter Webster agreed, adding, "Are we to blame?  Well, population and burning increases are warming the oceans."  These are scientific facts folks. Ignore them at your own peril (Hey wait, it's MY peril too).

Global Warming has been denied by the "Powers that Be" for years. "Nonsense," has generally been the comment from Corporate America and their political puppets.   Of course it's "Nonsense," to them, it may slow down industry production, profits, dividends and "perks" like Lear jets, penthouses and second homes in Aspen for company CEO's if they admit the truth!

Some everyday people don't accept Global Warming either, because, gosh darn, they just believe the President, and what he and the Oval Office are supposed to stand for (see my blog about Creeds, Motto's and Flags next week). These folks are convinced our Commander in Chief is doing what is best for us (This would be kind of "cute" if it weren't so dangerous).  Didn't we already have a guy named George who really never told a lie?

Then of course there are the religious fanatics who see every flood, hurricane, tornado or other natural disaster as the beginning of the end; Armageddon.  The Apocalypse.  Revelation in progress.  Convinced the end of the world is coming any minute,  most of these folks carry a toothbrush and are all ready for the "BIG" one.  They're just hanging around until the end, telling everyone else what to do (to kill time?) while they await Gabriels trumpets, Angel Michael, and the whole "Rapture" enchilada.  God speed and have a nice trip.

That leaves the rest of us, who actually believe in science and the reality of  not only global climate changes, but even weirder things like Magnetic Pole shifts, Quantum Mechanics and even Chaos Theory. Oh and let's not forget Evolution.  And you know what?  We're actually in the majority despite all the propaganda!  Even odder?  Many of us still believe in God (Really? Yes!).

Shock and Awe

America is in the midst of Culture Shock as well as climate change.
We're at war.  And during war we've  gotten used to seeing dead bodies on TV news (since Vietnam).  But, that's still, "Over there." Them, all of a sudden we're seeing dead bodies on our own streets.  This is very different.  Seeing sick, starving, homeless people on our front steps is something a little harder to ignore.

I don't care what your party affiliation is (I'm certianly too picky to stick with one party over another),  but most of us, have crossed partisan lines and shared tears and prayers together while reaching for our wallets in recent weeks.  And that part was good!
I don't know about you, but seeing human kindness sure gives me a shot of HOPE now and then.

Meanwhile, these displaced people are going to need more than temporary shelter and a few crumbs of food very soon.  They'll need houses and jobs.  Schools for the kids.  And, we need to find a way to PAY for all the things we need to fix and supply, inlcuding the cleanup and building of a new infrastructure for at least three, maybe four cities across the Gulf Coast.
Those donations we all sent in to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army (among other charities) did some real good.  Evacuees got medical help, food, clothes and more.  Even pets were rescued.

But the rest of that cookie jar change is not going to be spent on rebuilding.  Not one dime of it.  If there is a surplus, it will stay with the charities for future use (as I am sure it will be needed after Rita).

Say What?

When I first heard that the Salvation Army  flew some evacuees out from Camp Edwards to other states to relocate and start new lives I was thrilled.  I was still in awe that "our" evacuees (Lifted off rooftops  and flown directly here),  already had kids in school, while other victims were STILL living in the Houston Astrodome!

But then I heard what I hope is a rumor (anyone?). That the Salvation Army is expecting reimbursement from the MA for monies spent on airline tickets for these folks.   Say what?  State reimbursement?  What was all the money we gave them for?

The Red Cross and the SA had told us to "Stop giving anything but money"  they had enough food and toys and clothing.  So we gave more money.  Lots of it.

And I am happy to say that the 209 evacuees here on Cape Cod were well fed, given new clothing (Used clothing was not even being accepted),  got a $200.00 gift card at Filenes, had a BBQ with the Governor while watching a football game on a giant screen and are now being recruited for jobs in the local area (those that want to stay).  But the ones that opted to leave?  The SA wants their money back?  Someone explain this to me please?  I am at a loss. Just how does this work?
                                                                                                         Someone Diddled While Rome Burned
As for the paybacks on a larger scale: Did you know that President Bush plans to pay for much of this Hurricane rebuilding by cutting the brand new Drug Bill that would have helped the needy, disabled and elderly with prescriptions?  Out of everything in the federal budget ... why pick that?   One aide lamely tried to explain that since it has not yet been put into action, it seemed the perfect bill to cut.

I guess the idea is we won't miss what we never had.  Right?  Or maybe the Administration just hopes all seniors and poor/sick people will die before they get a chance to vote, "Anything but Republican" in the next "Pick a President Pageant."

What about just cutting back the 5% tax cut Bush gave out as we went to war?  That tax cut make no sense to anyone other than the very wealthy people that paid for Bush's Presidency anyway.  And even a few of them might not even complain if it was rescinded after all this havoc.  Right (Someone, Anyone)?

As this country falls deeper and deeper into debt, and with no money left in the treasury,  old people, poor people and those on fixed incomes will just have to keep to choosing between medicine or food.

Now THAT is Darwinism, Mr. President.  Not Creationism or even Intelligent Design!  It is simply and scientifically called, "Survival of the Fittest."  So, I guess science is OK when you're making money and not hungry.

Let Them Eat Cake

President Bush, at an all time low in the polls, has been handed a chance to redeem himself, and yet still chooses to turn a blind eye to the long term needs of people. He instead chooses once more to stick his finger in the short term political dike called "cronyism."
Shame on you George!  But after hearing his mother Barbara's comments about the poor being in better shape at the Astrodome than they were back in the slums of New Orleans, somehow I am not so surprised anymore.

To think Barbara Bush once had the respect of not only our Nation, but the world makes me now cringe.  "Face Value," folks.  That's all it is.  "Face Value."
It's OUR job to find the truths.

So what will our "Compassionate Conservative" cut next to pay his Federal bills?  School lunch programs for kids?  Day care centers?  How about some free clinics? There isn't much left in the public schools to take away...except maybe freedom of speech!
And all this, to make the GOP look good to the well heeled in 2008.

Fireside Chat?

The only people that will benefit from all the newly created jobs stemming from these terrible hurricanes (ironic isn't it? How tragedy creates jobs?), are political pals of the administration.  Four companies have already been chosen for the cleanup in New Orleans and Mississippi: Shaws, Fluor, Bechtel..and, everyone say it with me:  Halliburton!

And guess who Bush put in charge of this massive spending project? Can you say Rove?  As in Karl Rove.  The brand new Director and Architect of  the approximately $100 billion (and growing) reconstruction project for the Gulf states (Pre Hurricane Rita rates).

And the local people?  They're screwed.   Can someone tell me why the government cannot even pay people the "going rate" for jobs, yet can pay billions to the Fat Cats?  So much money being spent and promised and being "negotiated," that is has caused some some to say Bush is spending like Liberal!
Even Conservative right wing "elder" and  professional TV guest, Pat Buchanan, told Keith Olbermann on MSNBC that, "He (Bush) spends lavishly," adding this could cause a battle over spending in the Republican party that, "Could make 'Oil for Food' look like shoplifting."  Hmmmm...

I say again, as I did last week: Toss all these corporate crooks out  and bring back a Franklin Roosevelt type of WORK PROJECTS ADMINISTRATION (WPA) program (OK call me names again).

Hire anyone who wants to work.  Give them a shovel, some food, a trailer and let them build their own city back with nice BIG donations and advisers from...the BIG four contractors (who got this project, as usual, without bidding for it).

Heck, I'll even contribute to a WPA program.  Put it on my next tax form:  "Check this box if you want to donate $10, $20, $50, or more...to the new WPA program to rebuild the Gulf Coast without big corporations making money on the backs of poor people."

Of course, I would also like to know who would be handling all that money (Like NOT Arthur Anderson).  I mean this could be a great thing.  It should not be turned into a PORK roast at a Kosher BBQ!

People Are Talking
Forget all of the above.  An NBC poll this week said that the National deficit ranks at the BOTTOM of the barrel to voters who are much more concerned with keeping tax cuts, keeping God in the Pledge of Allegiance, keeping Gays from marrying and keeping women from having abortions.  OK.  Let's all go home. Come on folks.  Don't you get the Tax Cut Game yet?   They screw you every time ... and you yell, "More."  Hey, This is Rape!  You should be yelling "NO!"

Haven't you noticed that every time the Republicans give us a little tax cut...everything else always costs more right after?  Think about it.  For instance, if the tax cut is 5%,  food somehow sneaks up about 10%.  Gas goes up 20%., etc., etc., etc. It never fails.  Never mind your gasoline, have you checked the price of milk lately? How about the price of water?  How about a nice steak from Stop and Shop?

It didn't work when Reagan tried it (although his mirrors were shinier) and it does not work now.  Republicans give tax cuts, then run up deficits, then bow out and leave the mess to the Democrats, who then get blamed for inflation. This is not new. It's older than the horseless carriage!

Then when the Democrats need to raise taxes, to fix some levees or build a school, the Republicans yell from the wings, "See what those lousy Democrats do? They raise your taxes all the time."

Listen up.  Bill Clinton balanced our for the first time in many of our lifetimes.  What does that do?  Well, we had a bull stock market, good income, lots of job opportunities, an affordable housing market, no inflation, and we were even at peace!  Of course ... then came Monica ..(stupid, I admit, he admits, we all know).  However, even with itchy pants, Clinton never did what Bush and his buddies have done  ... asking the whole country to, "Bend over."

A Trickle Runs Through it

And how about that old "trickle down" theory? Even a member from a very Conservative group called the, AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE challenged the whole premise recently when he said, "The filter down economic view is not working. The Economic gains have really gone to the owners of Capital....not to the workers."

You hear him?  He said it right to our faces, "Not to the workers."  Is your home value high right now?  Don't get too comfy, values will be coming down real soon.  Inflation is on the way.

What else have you got?  I hope its gold, or some stock in the Corporate Giants getting all the building deals.  But, if you're just an average Joe or Jane who got a few hundred bucks back in the last tax break, get ready to be "Made Love To" again by your friendly Federal government (at least ask them for a kiss this time), as everything you need to live costs 20% more by next year.

An interesting letter to a local Cape paper last week said,  (Paraphrase), "We're to blame for the high priced gas, because for years we have given subsidies to corporate energy heads, to keep the price of gas artificially low."

See that?  We've been coasting folks.  We got it cheap and the government made up the difference in Subsidies. Ha!  Let's call it what it really  is: Corporate Welfare (and they want to kill the bill to get blood pressure meds to the poor).  Grrrrrr...

It Was Great Fun, But it was Just One of Those Things
OK.  All right.  So we gave "Charity" to the oil companies.  But we got a tax cut.  Right?  They said, "Spend,"  it's good for you.  It's good for the country!  So the people spent.  They started buying giant plasma TV's, vacation condos, and lots of cars.  And not just any cars. Big gas guzzling SUV's, RV's, and Hummers (Here on the Cape Big boats too).   Anything that went, "Vroom Vroom Vroom,"  and got less than 15 miles to the gallon was "in".  It was fun.  But, alas, those days are coming to and end...

Soon many of our  toys will have to go back.  Never mind the price of gas, the monthly payments on credit cards are going to be harder to make (that's inflation folks).
Did you know that SUV's are already the number one used vehicle for sale on Cape Cod?

This current gas crunch has already affected the Cape's retail business this past summer. Visitors and tourists still came, but other than their fuel, food and rooms, many tried not to spend one extra dime on souvenirs, artwork, or even little nik naks.  Ask any retailer.  But, I would guess that the one Walmart we allowed on the Cape had a decent year.  Other than a few lucky/smart  entrepreneurs, the only businesses on Cape Cod making any real money lately (year round), are the greedy developers and related construction companies (not regular local family run business) doing all that 40B building and sticking those huge homes on our coastal marshes and wetlands.

The Bubba is Bursting
Now in my humble opinion (hit comment for yours), most of the truly misinformed people in this country get their news from the local pulpit on Sunday, and/or from the "Butte-Mesa Canyon, West Yahoo-Land Newspaper."   The OP-ED pages in that town are not usually very open-minded, nor given to the opinions of many "outsiders" (Like anyone else in the USA)!   I think the local library in Butte-Mesa Canyon also has a permanent, "Out to Lunch" sign on its door.

But, now that Satellite Dishes and cable, have brought many of these folks "inside the barn" they can  now listen to Conservative radio stations (Howdy Mr. Limbaugh (druggie) and Mr. Liddy (felon), or  watch that bastion of Democracy (Fair and Equal) FOX TV News channel (At least it's not some Commie, Leftist, Liberal, Zionist owned Network News show that LIES about everything).

Actually we here in Massachusetts have our own Howie Carr within earshot...so you really don't need to even go to ButteMesa-Canyon to be truly misinformed anymore.

Now I only bring this up to make sure people are aware that the National Enquirer, the NY Post, about half the Australian newspapers, plus Fox news (and its affiliates) are ALL owned by one very right wing Conservative radical (From Australia) named Rupert Murdoch.  Talk about conspiracy theorist political party meisters  ...he wrote the book!

But, back at the ranch Blanche (I mean Butte-Mesa Canyon), I saw some good 'ol boys standing around their 16 cylinder 500 something horsepower trucks, drinking beers and talking 'bout hurricanes, tornadoes and the like.  Between gulps one of them mentioned how the end of the world is near, "Ceptin' for them God Fearin' Butte-Mesa folks" (and all their kinfolk too).  And then, as one of those boys churned up the engine on his Big Wheel Monster Truck, kicking up some major Rpm's, I was sure I heard him say, as he put the pedal to the metal,  something like,  "These here storms are the Lords answer for all them wicked people engaging in greed, avarices, sexual vices with women and men and..." ...and darn if I didn't  I miss his last line as he suddenly hit the right RPM, burned a whole lot of rubber, peeled out, (and somehow UP,....WAY up), and then came crashing down ... on all four of those huge tires, massively crushing six used Fords and a Chevy sedan as he  landed on their hoods.

As the smoke and fire cleared, I thought, "Wow. Now there's a God fearing oil burning helluva good time if I've ever seen one!"  Yee ha!

I'm meeting the boys at the Nascar track next Friday night for a tailgate party and a couple of kegs before the races.  They tell me that usually someone (in one of the races), is likely to "spin out," around 200 mph and either hit a wall or burst into flames.  Sounds like some more oil (and gas burning) fun to me.  I'll bring the Jerky.

By the way, you have to know that Democracy is still alive and even kicking (and hope may still spring eternal), when Bill O'Reilly suggests boycotting gas on Sundays just to make a point to the oil companies.

Stay dry America... ### JC

You had me right there with you JC, right up until “Especially if Mr. Bush gets the Supreme Court he wants and women don't even have a "morning after" pill to take with their morning after coffee.” Although I can agree with you on most points (aside from your unquestioning certainty about global warming) I am curious about your population control philosophy. Is that really the answer? Abortion and the morning after pill? I am just trying to get you to clarify what you are saying there. If earth's immune system is trying to fight anything off, I would propose that it is the steady decline of morals and personal responsibility that this statement represents.

“Seeing sick, starving, homeless people on our front steps is something a little harder to ignore.”
While this statement on the outside is very caring and understanding of a sensitive topic, it ignores the underlying issues behind it. What we were confronted with after hurricane Katrina was a segment of our population that was “set up for the fall.” Much of the poverty in our country can be traced back to years of learned reliance on welfare. We have a whole segment of the population that could not help themselves if given the tools to do so because they are so conditioned to having someone else do it for them. For every poverty stricken person who was waiting for rescue in New Orleans, I can show you a person new to this country (perhaps not even here legally), unable to speak the language, and yet completely capable of beginning a life here – and able to evacuate themselves and others in their community. I am not saying there should not have been better evacuation plans. There certainly should have. I am saying that we are not addressing the real problems resulting from overwhelming teenage pregnancy, absentee fathers, welfare reliance and dropout rates. It takes a responsible family to raise a responsible child and we are completely ignoring this issue. We have a whole segment of our population caught in a cycle of degeneracy: broken families, welfare, crime, violence, drugs and alcohol abuse. These are all symptoms of a disease that nobody likes to admit plagues America: decaying moral values.

You can poo poo Pat Robertson and his ilk, but they are on to something that some seem too willing to overlook. They are very conscious (more than most of us) of the deterioration of our values, families and communities. The good works of these faith-based organizations are shunned, ignored or unnoticed by those offended by the idea of religion. The battle these groups are fighting to preserve our country's moral fiber should be accepted by all of us as critical to the survival of our society. The path we are headed down is a dark one. Even one who does not believe in evil should be able to recognize that. When headlines read of newborns dumped in trash heaps and we have different levels of sex offenders on our streets, it is time we woke up and recognized the seriousness of our degenerating society. Regardless of beliefs, we all have a common interest in climbing out of this hole we are digging for America. We are kidding ourselves if we think there was that much difference between what we witnessed in New Orleans before and after Katrina. What we saw was a snapshot of what this society is becoming. It quickly degenerated into a pit of hopelessness, moral decay and suffering. To blame government for this free fall into misery is both ignorant and wrong.

Could someone enlighten me as to what good Pat Robertson has ever done - except for advertising his brand of religion. I find it hard to read about moral fiber and Robertson in the same paragraph - this is a man who recommends assasination of foreign leader whom he dislikes.

Abandonment of childen, sex offending and drug and alcohol addiction and the attendant broken families, criminality and violence are all ancient problems of society. I believe we are all more aware of this degeneracy because we now openly acknowledge and publicize it. But it's always been there, and no matter what we do, to some degree, it always will be there.

That is not to say that we should ignore it. There is much that can be done. Start by giving up on those who are disinclined to change when offered the opportunity. Help those willing to help themselves. Break the cycle by taking the children in foster care and revoking their parents' rights so that they can be adopted. Then get the upstanding families to raise these children in good homes and families. Do everything possible to educate children. Provide adequate health care for everyone.

There are people who will always go to the bottom of the barrel - let them. There are also always going to be people like your example of the new immigrant, who will do whatever it takes to get ahead. It has to do with human nature. If the immigrant were not a go-getter, he wouldn't have made it to this country. But he never would have been a degenerate in his home country, either.

Drew, your nonsense about the "learned reliance on welfare" shows you are just another mindless right-wing parrot.
Most of the folks who couldn't make it out of NO were employed, at wages that kept them too poor to buy cars (remember welfare reform?). And NOBODY provided any public transportation to make up the lack.
And if Pat Robertson, a "Christian" minister who publicly advocates assassination, is your idea of a champion of "moral fiber," I wonder what exactly your morals are.

Anon and Paul,

I am not here to debate Pat Robertson's beliefs- read my comments. Pat Robertson and the "Christian" ministers you are so quick to dismiss have the right idea when it comes to declining moral values.

Paul,

Your labelling me as a "right-wing parrot" is a typical "left-wing" response: denigrate someone whose beliefs you can't swallow, then ignore the issue at hand. If my beliefs make me a "right-wing parrot," then I will proudly wear that label. It is people like you who push those of us in the middle, further and further to the right.

Explain to me why it is that 200,000 Hispanics in the same economic and transportation situation were able to get out.

>>>"It is people like you who push those of us in the middle, further and further to the right. Explain to me why it is that 200,000 Hispanics in the same economic and transportation situation were able to get out.

Now, I don't want to be too "judgemental" myself, but if you call yourself someone in the "Middle" after a statement like that, I think you need to get a compass and a map.JC

My Original Comments to Drew from his Comments(which he also made into a Blog)
Drew said: "I am curious about your population control philosophy. Is that really the answer? Abortion and the morning after pill?"

No, I don't think the "Answer" to population control is abortion.
I do not take abortion lightly.
But I do think a woman does have the right to decide what to do with her own body.
And current law still gives women that right (up to around 12 to 14 weeks).
I respect those who don't not agree, but have a real problem with radical fringe groups who even condone murdering doctors that perform abortions!

Speaking of Radical: Late Term Abortions have now cleverly been renamed "Partial Birth Abortions" by the same great Radical Right Wing Marketing people that also gave us the term "Pro Life" to be used instead of Anti-Abortion.

This group has gone way overboard making Late Term Abortion, oops, I mean "partial Birth Abortion" the Poster Child, and symbol for the whole anti-abortion movement.
That is really "over the wall," but I am sadly concerned that marketing does win out, and at least a few innocent and uneducated will hear the rhetoric and advertising slogans instead of truth!

FLASH: Late Term Abortion is ALREADY against the law, and has been for many, many years.
It is only allowed if a mothers life is in imminent danger.

In the not so distant past, the only group that firmly stood against late term abortion (as a unified body) was the Catholic Church, which for centuries felt the life of the child was more important than the life of the mother (Wonder why there are less Nuns these days?).
An excellent old movie called The Cardinal was about that subject.

But even the Catholic Church considered it a Religious matter, not a secular legal one. They never took to the streets to force their views on everyone else.

But the radical anti-abortion groups that march today, showing photos of dead fetuses are not just against "late term" abortion. They are against ALL abortion rights for women.
Many rabid anti-abortionists would very easily sacrifice the life of the mother if it threatened the birth of the child.
Thank goodness late term abortion is still considered a MEDICAL decision.
Although some uninformed (or extremely radical) people actually think women are "Sneaking into abortion clinics in the dark of night to get rid of eight and nine month old fetuses." Nonsense!
No woman in her right mind would wait that long to have an abortion, even if she could!

The only women even considered for that type of abortion would, as I said, most likely die as a result of the childbirth. If a natural birth is not possible, and if a C-section cannot be done, a choice must be made. And as of now, it is only legal for a doctor to make that decision (And only under those extreme conditions).

Anti-Abortion radicals would have us believe women are lining up for this invasive and extensive surgery, as well as paying doctors fortunes to do it for them.
That is out and out HOGWASH!

To those who would rather see a woman die before stopping the birth of a baby, I say get some therapy!

Womens lives have always been cheap, but
beleive me, if MEN got pregnant, abortion would not only be free, it would be available on every corner!

Next subject: As for seeing bodies on our own sidewalks Drew got into a monologue on, "Underlying issues.....and poor people being "conditioned" to being poor and," having someone else do it for them"

I'm sorry, but when a national disaster in the form of a monster like Katrina happens, saving lives is much more important (and American) than jumping on a soapbox and screaming about welfare why people are poor. I find that statement not only ludicrous, but misplaced, mis-timed, and without substance. Walk a mile in someone elses shoes Drew.

And as for your comment:
"I am saying that we are not addressing the real problems ...teenage pregnancy, absentee fathers, welfare reliance and dropout rates.... We have a whole segment of our population caught in a cycle of degeneracy....These are all symptoms of a disease that nobody likes to admit plagues America: decaying moral values...."

Drew,I think part of the answer to those "problems" is that you ought to volunteer a lot more of your spare time to thelocal Boys and Girls Clubs. Perhaps you might even consider ADOPTING some of the unwanted babies those nasty teenage girls are having.

I always find it amusing when people care so much for the fetus, but when the fetus comes out, and ends up on Welfare or on Drugs, these same people (who force them to be born) won't lift a finger to help them. Those poor babies are not to blame!
If moral decay is present in this country, it's found in the people who ignore those "born" fetuses who now have names!

Note: Venezuela supplies us with a major portion of our oil.
And, Drew, by now you've heard that your hero Pat Robertson (whom you say is, "More concious of the deterioration of our values...and our nations moral fibre...)" recently called for the assasination of the President of that country. That not only embarrased most of his followers but even Washington.

Personally, I find the very people who point fingers and pass moral judments on others the most decaying segment of America. JC RappCity

JC,
First, thank you for clarifying your population control theory. Asking what we will do when "women don't even have a ""morning after"" pill to take with their ""morning after"" coffee" seemed (and still seems) a rather cavalier attitude toward the concept of procreation and led me into my "monologue." Funny how my opinions are a monologue, yet yours are something else?

Second, I never voiced any support for the radical anti-abortion groups or their beliefs, so I am not sure where that tangent came from. I was discussing decaying values... nothing else.

Third, my fiance and I have very seriously discussed adopting a baby in the aftermath of this catastrophe. To assume you know something about me or my beliefs based on your natrrow mindedness is just sad.

Fourth, Pat Robertson is not my hero. I never said he was. I am not even religious. I just can't stand this growing left wing trend of maligning faith-based programs and Christian groups. This reeks to me of the worst kind of prejudice. I really get upset when I see the words "faith-based" used in a negative context, and preachers names being thrown out there in attacks on other's beliefs (regardless of their own weaknesses). I am sorry that you disagree, but I think that morals and family values are a very serious issue that played an enormous part in the lives of the victims of this disaster (whether prior to this storm or subsequent to it).

This whole debate has been propelled forward by those who immediately blasted the President after this hurricane hit... the day it hit. To accuse those who disagree of getting on the soap box instead of saving lives is the most ridiculous attempt to deflect blame in this. It was faith-based organizations first trying to aid victims in this; and, the last time I checked, money has no political affiliation or beliefs.

We are all paying the price for years of misdirected priorities and decay. Should you disagree with that, I am very sorry for you.

Interesting rant.

I would suggest you get to an ancillary oxygen supply. It would seem that the heights from which you choose to toss down your tablets of wisedom are causing an acute hypoxia. This is a severe medical condition and must be attended to quickly. If not it will cause severe damage to your social skills and your ability to be a moderately happy person. If not you will then find yourself transfixed by the glow of a CRT screen and trading conspiracy theories with others who have a much time on their hands as you.

If an immediate dose of oxygen can be obtained at a level where common folk can be found walking and talking then the prognosis is good. Yet for a truly long term cure to your condescending affliction, I believe a job is necessary. One that allows the sun to hit your face.

Hmmmmm...seems to me that both you and Drew have webs in your heads. You're both in the out-field missing the ball. As usual I find Rapp City an interesting and well researched write. (Pun on Write.) This is the kind of wonderful writing that used to appear in newspapers. Long before Murdock owned most of them. But, now that everyone is afraid of expressing anything during this lame-duck Born Again Presidency....(note that George wasn't born again till deciding to run for President and needing that far-right vote.) I think Rapp City is wonderful reporting...and at times filled with quick wit. I also see J.C.s courage to expound some personal views....sice this is a BLOG after all. JC also takes the time to answer all. Sooooooo take your limited right-wing fannies to church this Sunday a.m. and pray that we all survive the next ten years without the fear of reading open minded articles. What have you done lately for this society besides COMPLAIN!

Again, everyone, I will confine my comments to the "comment" page instead of "blogging up" the main page just to see my name in print.

Drew: You said in your last public oratory about me: " Now maybe I am wrong, but I take this attack as maligning people who get their news from the local pulpit (or anywhere else that conflicts with his or her narrow minded views). The rest of the dialogue I will let you judge for yourselves."

Yes Drew, you ARE wrong. About me. And about what I said; Both literally and figuratively.

You misread my words. I never said people whose views contrast with mine got their news from a pulpit or the "Murdoch" news.
What I DID say, was that many
uneducated people are fed, and rely on, sources of information handed to them by only those they trust (and sometimes that is the pulpit and the one paper in their towns).

Some people do not even have ACCESS to the opposing views from the press that you and I are fortunate enough to share - even if we disagree.
Still others are often "culturally" afraid to even venture OUT of their own yards, fearing it would alienate them from family and neighbors (even their Churches or Synagogues or Mosques or whatever) if they had a dissenting thought.
That is what I meant by the "Barn."

People who don't even understand puns and metaphors frighten me even more than people who disagree with me.

And to my friend Sulla, who said I am in need of oxygen to be a happier person and not, "...transfixed by the glow of a CRT screen and trading conspiracy theories with others who have a much time on their hands as you," what, may I ask are YOU doing here, wading through all of this disucssion on such a sunny day? OH, and one more thing Drew:

Congrats on the Baby! Great idea.

But if you and the GF are serious about adopting, I do hope you realize that orphans from white families are very hard to find. Some people wait years and even pay small fortunes for them. But, I am sure some underprivilidged baby of another ethnicity or color might be available immediately. Good luck on that.

OH, and have you thought of MARRYING your fiance' before having this baby (or even before having sex)?
That might be something "Moral" to consider.

And lastly Drew, this was not a debate until you began one.
My blog was not about poor people and the welfare state. It was mostly about Global Warming and a lousy Administration. The only mention of welfare I made was "Corporate Welfare", which you may have mistaken as the "other" kind.

As for attacks on "Faith based" programs, nobody but YOU has mentioned the subject either.

Perhaps instead of attacking me, you should consider channeling your thoughts, outrage and anger into an "Original" Blog of your own, and stop feeding your own negativity here in RappCity. Just MY "opinion" again.

Thank you for understanding the nature of Blogging, and the freedom it affords us ALL to "expound" our personal views.
You are very right that some people just complain and do nothing. Some even complain and don't VOTE!
I think if this administration passes any new amendments, the first one should be:
"If you don't vote, you lose the Constitutional right to complain"!

Jammie and Mary:

Some people will never understand about the environment.
Controlled cutting of trees (even controlled burns) can be a good tool when overgrowth and dense brush are fire hazards. But to cut down whole forests for McDonalds etc.(which is poisoning us anyway), and to rid ourselves of perfectly healthy trees (it happens a lot..and often illegally here on Cape Cod) just for a better view of the Sound or the Bay just ain't right!

It's a good thing Hurricane Rita sent her EYE over the empty marshes and wetlands of Sabine Pass (on the border of LA and TX). People around those parts have (so far) been smart enough not to build on them.

Had the eye passed a little west, over Galveston (One Lucky Puppy), hundreds of million dollars of expensive
beachfront property, and the adjoining neighborhoods would have been destroyed ...causing a major tragedy.

Thanks for writing. It's refreshing to see some real Intelligent Design. JC

JC,

Debates occur when people disagree with the conclusions drawn by others. You seem to disagree with mine, as I most definitely disagreee with yours. If you did not expect debate or dissention, you should have taken this into account when you began placing your views in the public eye for all to see. I am sure it would be much easier if everyone agreed with your narrow view of things. As for "blogging up" the main page - that is what bloggers do, they blog. I am not sure what part of that concept you missed.

Should you not wish to be called out on denigrating those who disagree with you, I would suggest you simply think more about what you are saying. I didn't say these things, you did. "Now in my humble opinion (hit comment for yours)..." I am not putting words in your mouth, nor would I attempt to. It seems that you assume everyone thinks just as you do. I hit the comment button as you suggested, and now I am the bad guy? Take some responsibility for your opinions. Either own them, or disown them. You can't throw all of this out there and then be immune to criticism from those who are offended.

As for my personal life (yes you made this personal), you obviously know or care nothing about my personal relationship, or you certainly would not be making assumptions about my sex life, marriage and adoption - all very serious decisions. Perhaps marriage and adoption are something taken lightly by you, but they are both much more serious propositions for most. Apparently for you race would be a consideration in adopting. For us, it would most certainly not. Thank you for your concern?

Perhaps you should go back and read the progression of the dialogue here before you accuse me of attacking you... it was most definitely the other way around. I simply disagreed with your opinions, nothing personal about it. The personal attack came from you and you alone, it is right here in black and white for all to see. Why don't you read it for yourself?

My blogs are my opinions- my reactions to the world around us. I am sure it would be more comfortable for you if I just crawled away into my own corner to blog, but not much progress whould be made in that.
