"Bill Bennett Won't You Please Go Home"

"Clowns to the Left of me, Jokers to the Right..."
Well, another "Right Fielder" took a tumble this week. And I'm not talking baseball...
I'm not even talking about Tom DeLay (Republican House Leader) who was indicted this week on campaign fraud. Not even not Bill Frist (Republican Senate Majority Leader), who may also face indictment on a "Martha Stewart Type" insider stock tip sale (Will he get the same treatment as Our Lady of the Kitchen?).
No, I mean Washington "Insider," radio host and self proclaimed, "MORALIST" for America, Bill (William J.) Bennett.
This "Moral Moron" made the mistake of speaking his real thoughts out loud on his daily radio show a few days ago when he said, "...You could abort every Black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down." Yikes! (Full quote at bottom of page.)
As the Press, along with numerous Black and other social leaders swooped down on him, Bennett compounded the issue further by appearing on the Hannity and Colmes show (where else) offering explanations so lame, I thought I saw a "cringe" cross Hannity's face.
I tuned in the show myself, wanting to actually give the guy a chance to explain. Maybe his words were taken out of context. I do agree that many people get pounced upon for a simple slip of the tongue (Cindy Sheehan accidentally said, "America is not worth dying for," when she really meant to say, "Iraq is not worth dying for"), and look at the mess that created.
A hungry Press can tear into flesh just to keep their ratings up. So, bearing that in mind, I wanted to hear Bennett explain his words himself.
So I watched.
Obviously distressed, Bennett just went on and on... Occasionally (it seemed to me), looking at Hannity for reassurance (kind of like, "You won't let me down will ya buddy?")
But after explaining what he, "Really meant to say," for the fourth or fifth time, he started attacking ...instead of defending. He was turning red as he spoke angrily of the critics of his "racist" statement. And many prominent people had taken great offense at the statement and said so publicly.
But then, in what could only be termed a desperate move, he took direct, personal aim, at Sen. Ted Kennedy, saying, "Kennedy has no right to judge me when he killed a girl."
Oh my... Folks, that had to be the most tasteless and offensive comment I have ever heard on Prime Time television (And I've been watching TV since Murrow lit his first cigarette on camera).
What an awful thing to say ... even if your arse is on the line!
Bennett then rambled on for another minute or so before Hannity mercifully wrapped the segment (BTW and coincidentally, Bennett's web site has a link to Hannity's book, eerily titled: DELIVER US FROM EVIL). You know, I generally find Sean Hannity a dangerous, muck-raking, lunatic, right wing extremist, but I will give him a point for loyalty.
Anyway, the real KICKER is that Bennett, whom Ronald Reagan appointed as Chairman of the National Endowment Fund (no wonder Art class has been dropped in school) and Secretary of Education (no wonder kids can't read), has often called Liberals, "Inherently less moral than Conservatives."
Hmm..."Inherently less moral"... an interesting concept. It now has me wondering if Conservatives are born that way, or actually just choose it. Well, let them marry if they want. It's none of my business.
But, wait, this gets even better...
President Bush (once off the sauce himself) liked Bennett's, "Get Tough Approach" to drugs," so much, he made him the first "Drug Czar." He liked Bennett's argument that, "Individuals have a moral responsibility to own up to their addictions."
Then it was revealed that Bennett had a severe gambling problem!
Ironically, after finally leaving public office, Bennett wrote a book called THE BOOK OF VIRTUES, and remarked the morning after the 2004 elections: "Having restored decency to the White House, President Bush now has a mandate to affect policy that will promote a more decent society, through both politics and law."
With his contant barrage against the immorality of "Drinking, "Homosexual Unions" "Wife Swapping" and even, "The RIKKI LAKE Show " (Say what?) ....Bennett always seemed to avoid any words about his own vice: High stakes casino gambling!
This may not seem important now, but this man worked with two Presidents, the Congress and the Cabinet helping to form Public Policy!
When he arrived in Washington, casinos were only allowed in TWO states. By the time he left Washington, casino gambling had expanded to twenty-eight states! Currently, the Governor of Maryland (Bennett's current home) is trying to introduce slot machines to the state. The Washington Monthly and Newsweek Magazine reported that over the last decade Bennett has been a "Preferred Customer" in both Atlantic City and Las Vegas, where they put his total losses at more than Eight Million Dollars!
Why am I taking this time on Bill Bennett? Corruption, greed, breaking laws and racism is very common in the Political and Corporate arena. It's certainly not new. But what is so appalling about Bill Bennett, in particular, is that while this man continually preached to us about Morality and Virtue (and urged prominent friends to join his stances against social issues like Gay rights, Open Marriages ... and even Drinking for goodness sake ...he considered himself above it all. HE had the right to HIS vices!
Not only that, he let his guard down and showed us that a man we trusted and believed to be an intelligent leader of people is just a low down, run of the mill Racist if you scratch the skin. Add "Hypocrite" as well, to the egomaniac who finally got, "Outed" by his own stupidity and big mouth.
From Jim Jones and his brainwashed suicidal flock, to Jimmy Swaggart and his hookers, to Pedophile Priests and the Rabbi that put a "Hit" out on his wife, we have once more been assaulted by a sheep in wolves clothing. A prominent person of some authority thinks he has the obligation and even the right to plan everyone elses lives, while living his own according to his own rules.
It will be interesting to see how the radio network he currently works for deals with the outcome of this racism issue. I think they will be singing along with most of us, "Bill Bennett Won't you Please Go Home."
*Incidentally.... as of this writing, President Bush himself has now condemned the statement made by Bill Bennett.
On a different political note, but of extreme local importance:
Ex Governor Bill Weld (who is considering a run for Governor of New York), told the NY Post yesterday that he will be rooting for the Yankees this weekend for a win against the Red Sox.
Weld, who admitted changing his loyalty just "a couple of days ago" (???) then said, "With the Red Sox having won last year, I don't have to root for them anymore." Grrrrrr.....
And to think I once liked him... Interesting Fact: Bill Weld is a native New Yorker, born on Long Island.
As Promised...Bill Bennett's full quote:
"I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So, these far out, these far reaching extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."

Hogwash! I most certainly did!
I quoted the man's exact words.
Anonymous then RE-quoted Bennett and said, "It was just a dumb example to use."
He then went on to state his own opinion; That it was part of of a bigger point Bennett was making in that, "If ALL White babies were aborted the crime rate would go down too, because there would be fewer people to become criminals."
What?
Pardon me Anonymous, but Bennett never said anything remotely related to that. He never said, "If ALL white babies were aborted the crime rate would go down." He never said, "If ALL babies (in general) were aborted the crime rate would go down." He specifically said "Black babies."
I did not feel it necessary to use my Blog space to quote the entire conversation surrounding Bennett's obviosly racist quote.
The quote spoke for itself ...to most people.
Perhaps I should have included the show's greetings, other topics discussed, a couple of commercials and the sign off jingle/theme too.
Anyone wanting to see what preceded Bennett's comments, or what followed them can easily (If they got here and are reading this) type his name into GOOGLE and see (or hear) the radio show in its entirety.
I am assuming that most of the intelligent readership of this web site has already read, seen or heard this story reported many times this week
I still say that even in the BROADEST context that exists, Bennett's degrading and absolutely racist words still stand out ..on their own...showing his true nature: A Hypocritical Racist! JC
Everything about MR.BENNETT seems hypocritical, but I am not sure you got the racist part right. Had he simply stated every "single parent" baby, he would have been 100 percent on the money (I certainly wouldn't question that hypothesis). He doesn't support the idea any more than I do. The key word in the statement preceding the oft quoted one is "hypothesis." Bennett was discussing someone else's (Freakonomics?) hypothesis.
Bennett's message regarding moral virtues is an extremely important one. The messenger is obviously lacking in some areas himself, but I challenge you to find someone in politics (or a layperson) who is not. I offer no apologies for Mr.Bennett, but his intent was obviously confused in its delivery. The gambling thing is his own personal battle- if we did not each have those I don't see where there would ever be any opportunity for growth. "Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone."
Why is it when a liberal does somethign wrong 20 years ago, it's petty to bring it up, but when the President wins a battle to become sober, he's just a dry drunk and can never be a valid person? That crap is a slap in the face to people in AA everywhere.
It must be great to be so perfect as JC.
30 + years of democratic social programs have let blacks and the poor into a spiral cespool. Let's be honest and call it as it is.
Thanks Bill Bennett for making us take notice.
YOU ARE THE ONES WHO ARE THE BIGGEST CRIMINAL ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH. EROPE EMPTIED THEIR PRISONS OF WHORES, THIEVES AND OTHER MALCONTENTS ON THESE STOLEN SHORES.
BILL BENNET VOCIES THE IGNORANT, WHICH IS RATHER RAMPANT IN THE UNITED HATES OF AMERICA. STATEMENTS LIKE THAT, AFFIRMS ONE THAT THE LEGALIZED ABORTION SHOULD HAVE BEEN AROUND AS EARLY AS THE THIRTIES, AND PERHAPS, BUSH AND BENNETT WOULD HAVE BEEN JUST A FIVE TO SEVEN DAY CYCLE. TOO BAD!
ONE MORE THING, WHAT MADE SOCIAL PROGRAMMES SPRIAL IS POOR ADMINISTRATION BY THE REPUGNANTCANS. SPENDING BILLIONS, WHICH COULD HAVE FIXED THE LEVIES IN NEW ORLEANS, GO TO EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES,NATIONALIZED MEDICINE, ENVIORNMENT ETC., AND NOT TO AN ASSININE,ILLEGAL, WHITE MALE WAR, WOULD HAVE HELPED MILLION OF PEOPLE. EVEN YOU CHOWDAR HEAD!!!!!!!!!! PROGRAMME ON A ILLEGAL WARGOING TO AN ILLEGAL WAR, DUMPING MONEY WILL DR ITSone more thing
"What do rice and powell think about this - they probably agree with Bennett."
As JC wuld say, "I quoted the man's exact words." Further, I still say that "even in the BROADEST context that exists, Brit's degrading and absolutely racist words still stand out ..on their own."
I got the Racist part right.
You are now, just as your sibling Anonymous did, putting your own SPIN on Bennett's words....and not just quoting him, but telling us what you THINK he meant to say.
I am talking about what he DID say.
Bennett himself said about FREAKONOMICS: "You know, one of the arguments in this book Freakonomics that they make is that the declining crime rate, you know, they deal with this hypothesis, that one of the reasons crime is down is that abortion is up."
The "Hypothesis" you speak of is clearly stated in the book: "...crime is down...abortion is up."
Only Mr. Bennett's quote of the book mentions the abortion of BLACK babies.
Bennett's "message" is very clear. To those who heard it ...sans background noise and rhetoric.
You are defending a man who hypocritically spent years preaching morals and then disgraced himself by his own immoral words and deeds.
You say, "Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone."
Your last thought is the only one I agree with.... and, ironically, the one Bennett sorely needs to learn.
JC (RappCity
Your obviously don't grasp the connection in preaching MORALS to all of us on one hand, while gambling away EIGHT million dollars on the other.
And on top of that, the man comes out with such a RACIST statement ...showing an even a deeper moral deficiency.
And when caught in this moral trap he brought about himself, he pulls the oldest (and tiredest) Republican/Conservative trick in the book: Blame a Democrat who did something wrong.
If the only thing Conservatives can do ...when accused of wrongdoing is to point to another mans actions (of over thirty years ago), they SHOULD be ashamed of themselves!
Other than being downright offensive, it simply avoids the issues by shifting blame, and it just WON'T WASH anymore.
Conservatives need to start accepting the same responsibitly they expect from Liberals and stop screaming "Kennedy" every time they do something wrong and get caught!
It's's not only ridiculous already, it's insane!
I'm not perfect. But, I also do not go around telling other people how to live their lives either. Bill Bennett has done just that, and with Washington backing too(which I am sure is gone for good now)!
He's cooked his goose this time.... thankfully. JC (RappCity)
Your thanking Bill Bennett has given me my biggest laugh of the day. Thank you.
Anonymous in CAPS:
A few very good thoughts, but they would have been easier to read in regular font instead of Caps. Thanks for writing.
Peter: No matter the topic or the opinion, your wit is amusing. :)
I have something to say:
Thanks for the comments.
Anonymous from the UK:
You said: " ...typing in 'Bill Bennett' to google will reveal a whole host of conservative sites that back up his opinions and say that he was simply misquoted. I find that 'morally reprehensible.' There is no defence to such crass and racist remarks - this is a man who was a prominent republican politician not so long ago - what does that say about other republicans? - do their opinions wildly vary from Bennetts? < <<
Good point. These "Good "Ol Boys" could use some corraling.
You also said: "Republicans now embrace blacks who are able to 'act white'"
You bet they do! They offer them the "American Dream" ...based on the old CLASS and MONEY ideals.
I can understand some minority folks agreeing with Republicans (NOT Right Wing Conservatives) on certain issues; I do too.
But I still scratch my head when I see Black people (especially those who are somewhat "comfortable"), standing side by side with people just one step away from a white sheeted wardrobe.
It amazes me.
Those Log Cabin Gay people vote Republican too (another scratch).
Hey, I'm sure, at the beginning, some German Jews thought Hitler was an OK guy too.
As some defenders of Hitler still claim today (when not bashing Kennedy), "He DID help the ecomony at least." (Hoo Boy...)
I can only hope the real motives of the minority people who stick with radical right wingers are just to try and change society from "within."
Thanks for writing, and Peace to you too. JC (RappCity)
Your uncle (sadly) was quite right that Bennett 'slipped' and told the truth.
As for your uncle himself, I'm glad it sparked some conversation and that you were able to enlighten him a bit. Good for you.
I do hope you meant your "Biggest Prayers" were for a more educated "Next Generation," rather than just the folks under 80 (right?).
My real hopes lay with those from 1-60 (well, maybe 1-30 really, haha,).
Thanks for writing.
I have often wondered why Dubya is so hard to find and/or slow to react while on vacation or when disasters hit.
It very well could be they need to "sober him up" first.
It sure would explain a lot else too. HA!
Peter:
At least Grant showed up for the war. :)
Hey...who's buried in Grant's tomb? JC (RappCity)
(If I were him I'd demand that she not drive again....after all she partied, ran a stop sign, and killed a man!) Hmmmmm sounds like a Kennedy sequel...only he's paid dearly for driving to close to the edge of that wooden bridge, and being too drunk to realize anything...BUT, HE DIDN'T RUN A STOP SIGN SOBER.)Funny how Lauras' commiting MURDER is never mentioned!
I was responding, Madam, to your recitation of the newspaper's allegation by qeustioning the calibre of the source, not your dredging of a 40 year old traffic accident (by the way, she didn't leave the scene of the accident like the Senator).
We marsupials are used to taunts, due to our versitilty; your personal coments I shall let pass.
Your original defense of Bennett made a lot more sense than your current ramblings.
At least, at first glance, Bennett might have fooled you too.
But to still defend him, even when your own President has condemned his words, is just stubborness ...as far as I can see.
ANYONE who preaches morality to others...(especially while sitting on Presidential committees pushing their own views on the public) ...and then does not live up to those things himself is always going to OPEN the door to becoming a hypocrite.
And he pushed the door wide open.
Semantics only goes so far in defending a bad deed(like Clinton saying "Is" may have a few different meanings).
But after careful scrutiny, by the media, the President even the best Conservative Cirlces in this country, Bennett(even if agreed with privately) has been deemed "Out of Line."
You just can't write a book about VIRTUE while gambling and being a racist. It will come back and BITE you!
The man is a HYPOCRITE ...and that won't change ...even if you defended him from today to the end of time.
Let him go to Gamblers
Anonymous ...Then he can join Rush Limbaugh at Narcotics Anonymous for a coffee break. The two of them can meet up with Gordon Liddy at Felons Anonymous on their way to pick up Dubya at Alcoholics Anonymous.
Then they can all stop by some Grand Juries on the way home and check out how Karl Rove, Bill Frist and Tom DeLay are doing with their indictments ....and "possible" indictments.
Aren't you tired of all these Power Brokers telling YOU what to do....and then doing whatever THEY please?
Aren't you tired of being lied to?
This administrations' ship is sinking fast ....Grab a life preserver.
I had not put the 'e' on the end of the word, as I assumed you were a lady.
I see you are more familiar with the other speling and its meaning.
Do you have any substantiation that Benett is a racist and that the President is drinking other than your own assertions? Perrhaps Mom's tabloids with thrilling stories about how Bennifer is sleeping with Jolie?
May I begin to make unsubstantiated assertions now? Let's begin by calling Robert Byrd a racist...no, too farfetched...
I had not even see the Rag Mags when I wrote my comment.
I swear.
I just assumed...by Bush's actions ...and made a joke.
But, I am laughing now.
Bush would HAVE to be one of THREE things to be letting everything happening to him be unfolding as it is: Drunk, stupid, or just incompetent. Take your pick.
To hear him, saying he is back on the trail of Osama Bin Laden this week has perked my ears up.
In the past Bush said of Bin Laden: "He can run..but he can't hide."
Well, Mr. President...To quote Jon Stewart --- "He HAS been hiding...for FOUR years"!
Hey...about you and Peter Porcupine: I know he asked when your "two headed offspring" would be delivered, but let's forgive him as we forgive Laura and George, Teddy and Bill and all the others in the public spotlight that have Mucked Up over the years.
Keep on writing. You are always so up on current events.
Peter:
I would hope we can have discourse here without resorting to "twin headed babies" in alien wombs when responding to women with differing opinions.....even if the Enquirer is part of the subject.
While it might not be ideal for Supermom to bring up Laura Bush's accidental killing of a passenger in her car, it is equally distasteful to constantly hear Kennedy's lost passenger story from Anti-Liberals.
Bill Bennett already spewed forth enough venom about Kennedy to last a while.
Hey, why don't we let Laura and Kennedy off the hook already?
Had they both served time.....they'd even be out by now.
She may have been drinking... He may have been scared....
But it is SERIOUSLY the past....and we have more important things to worry about these days.
Incidentally, Sen. Kennedy..(I speak as someone LUCKY enough to live in MA) despite his own shortcomings and mistakes, has dedicated his life to, and given more for this state (and trying for the country) than any other TEN politicians in the past 40 years!
Massachusetts STILL has the best and most affordable medical programs in the country... as well as some of the best social programs every created.
What state is better to live in than this one?
I love Massachusetts ... and Kennedy has a lot to do with WHY.
Now....as for the other thing: I have not seen a President on the front page of the Enquirer since Clinton and Monica.
The paper IS (as I hope most know by now) owned by Ultra Conservative, Rupert Murdoch, who also owns FOX News and the NY Post.
I say putting Mr. Bush on the cover of one of his Rag Mags just goes to prove that MONEY is more important than his own political pick for President.
I guess even Murdoch feels it's time to cut and run.
You ask if I have any "substantiation" that Bennett is a racist
...and if the President is drinking.
Let me take the second part about Bush first:
Aboslutely not. None.
And I wish I could have gotten the above post in quicker.
I was joking.
But, let's not totally dismiss the fact that it is always a big possibility for relapse when someone has an admitted alcohol problem (which he has admitted).
And Bush is, first and foremost a man; A human being.
The pressures this guy must be under are immense!
Nixon and Johnson needed a "nip" to get them through quite often (Others had other vices to let off steam).
Many of our first ladies, from Bess Truman to Mamie Eisenhower to Pat Nixon(Whoknows how many others in history) have been known to have drinking problems as well (God bless Betty Ford for admitting it..and trying to help others).
As for Bill Bennett:
If a woman stood on a street corner in an extremely short skirt, wearing very, very, very high
heels ...then leaned into my car window, to ask if I wanted, "To Party," it would'nt take much thought to hear those words ...and know what she (or even he) meant.
When a man says (paraphrase) that there would be less crime if "black" babies (not simpley "babies") were aborted, I assume him to be a racist. Yes. Absolutely.
I think the most telling part of his statement was when he added insult to injury by saying that it may be reprehensible...but it would still lower crime.
He cemented himself with that line.
The man's OWN words, by there very nature, substantiate the facts.
This is not second hand knowledge. Someone else did not tell us he said this.
He said it on the air, for everyone to hear.
People can debate what they THINK he meant to say for years.....but what he actually said, is now a matter of fact and history.
If it just "slipped out," I feel even sorrier for him.
And yes. Byrd could be considered racist as well. But at least he admitted he hated black people. I don't care for him either.
Racism is NOT a Partisan issue.
Let's move on already.
My point had only to be that I've had it up to here with Bennet talking and bringing up Kennedy along with all of the other nit-wits! Just a tired Dem...tired of the stupid statements of folks who blabber without looking at their own party, their own religion, their own political representatives. Also tired of party bosses who put lives at stake for no! Where is that oil we are protecting (only as of last week) in Iraq. I'm just sick and tired of all the liars who are running this country! OOOOps...excuse me....we did catch that BIG CROOK Martha Stewart! How stupid was that! Wake up folks...your country, besides your water is being stolen.
Thank your for correcting my memory about Laura Bush's car accident and how the boy died.
It happened a long time ago...just like Kennedy's unfortunate accident.
Speaking of Oil, however, Bush is currently pushing a bill through Congress(already approved by the House this past week) to build more oil refineries in the U.S.
Some of the planned sites include protected National Land.
Why am I not surprised?
With less than a full term left, Bush knows his days are numbered, so he's planning for a nice retirement.
There is talk that he will have a much harder time pushing this bill through the Senate.
GOOD!
Let's hear about how THAT is evil now...
Very often Presidents (and Governors)sign "Packages" with many bills included in them.
Congress usually sends it to the President to get a piece of unpopular legislation passed along with other more popular things making the bill look prettier.
The process is older than you and I.
The "Line Item Veto" issue has been fought over these, "strung together" bills from Congress.
Most PORK gets passed in this type of packaged legislation.
I DO think ONE part of Bush's energy bill is wrong. We DO need to preserve more National Land from greedy Oil Barons.
But, don't automatically ASSUME I am against the whole bill (although I need to get out my microscope before deciding on the rest of it).
And please don't put words in my mouth ...like "Evil," when you are only ASSUMING my positions on things.
Tsk Tsk.
I am VERY MUCH in favor of finding alternative sources of energy (Solar and Wind included) to make things easier and cheaper and cleaner for this country.
But, if the President is using the dubious tactic of offering us something GOOD (solar and wind credits) if we accept something terribly BAD
...Then I might need to reject the whole thing.

CALLER: I noticed the national media, you know, they talk a lot about the loss of revenue, or the inability of the government to fund Social Security, and I was curious, and I've read articles in recent months here, that the abortions that have happened since Roe v. Wade, the lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30-something years, could fund Social Security as we know it today. And the media just doesn't -- never touches this at all.
BENNETT: Assuming they're all productive citizens?
CALLER: Assuming that they are. Even if only a portion of them were, it would be an enormous amount of revenue.
BENNETT: Maybe, maybe, but we don't know what the costs would be, too. I think as -- abortion disproportionately occur among single women? No.
CALLER: I don't know the exact statistics, but quite a bit are, yeah.
BENNETT: All right, well, I mean, I just don't know. I would not argue for the pro-life position based on this, because you don't know. I mean, it cuts both -- you know, one of the arguments in this book Freakonomics that they make is that the declining crime rate, you know, they deal with this hypothesis, that one of the reasons crime is down is that abortion is up. Well --
CALLER: Well, I don't think that statistic is accurate.
BENNETT: Well, I don't think it is either, I don't think it is either, because first of all, there is just too much that you don't know. But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky.
It was a dumb example to use, but the point he was making is that these generalizations are never accurate. If all WHITE babies were aborted, the crime rate would go down, too, because there would be fewer people to become criminals.
It was a stupid and insensitive remark, but I thought we should see the whole thing.
