The site of the most complex and controversial cleanup project in U.S. history is to be converted to a federal wildlife refuge and open to the public. Under the direction of contractor Kaiser-Hill Co., more than 2,000 truckloads of waste, at least 1,900 containers of plutonium and 21 tons of ?weapons-useable nuclear material? have been removed from the site, the AP reports. But not everyone is impressed. Critics say the site is not safe ?because the cleanup did not include (areas) where radioactive waste was illegally dumped or buried,? the AP reports, noting the ?hot spots? are not within the proposed refuge boundaries. Bush touts in an AP report, noting comments about Miers?s evangelical Christian beliefs and her church attendance serve to define his candidate and fill in the sizeable blanks of her public life. While many, like me, may share some of Miers?s religious beliefs, her spiritual testimony has about as much to do with her judicial qualifications, as baseball has to do with brain surgery. What most people want to know, Mr. President, is this: is a nominee with no experience as a judge capable of sitting in judgment on the complex issues of the day that are far more legally obscure than when Earl Warren was on the bench? In short, does she know the difference between a press briefing and a legal brief? The jury is still out on this one.
