Naw, he's no Kennedy. His ears are too big and that space twix his front teeth bespeak a passionate soul, which no Kennedy since our Jack has exhibited.

I saw him there waving and of course, waved back. I loved it and his gutsy spirit!!

I wouldn't care if he was just out of kindergarten; I would vote for him just to get that useless hunk of poo O'Leeeery out of office.

I like having a state Senator that I can throw a Big Gulp at while I'm stuck in a rotary.

That's not a great photo of him, I've seen others where he looks way cuter. I would drive around a rotary at least three times just to look at him, he is just yummy! And Republican too! I would vote for him all day long if I could.

People of Cape Cod protect yourselves from the dumbing down of our politics. In his flyer he blatantly uses a retired former Selectmen's name and a board member of Mass Maritime and clearly states that he is supporting him. He has NEVER supported him, did NOT give his permission to use his name and has not talked to him and yet Bennett used his name as supporting him. There is more cache in being a "young republican" than a young democrat". Politically self-serving.

Doug is a genuinely good guy with a huge amount of enthusiasm. He just wants to do some good. The conspicuously anonymous and rather rude person comparing him to a chocolate lab has obviously not talked to him at any length or looked into his education and background. I have. Ask any informed voter on Nantucket about his unrealistic proposals as a selectmen, his inability to be prepared or do his homework for any meeting, his fiscal irresponsibility and his announcement that he was running for Governor. Doug likes to campaign that is obvious, and he is a nice guy, but he lacks the actual job and decision making skills to be an effective leader. He's proven that as a selectmen many times over.

That chocolate Lab post probably came from a comment I once made on Nantucket TV. I said that a lot of people told me they were voting for Doug, because he had so much energy. My reply was that my black Lab was energetic as well, but she wouldn't get my vote. Energy isn't the only quality to judge a candidate on. FDR was confined to a wheel chair but raised this country up from a Depression, and was our Commander-in-Chief during the Second World War. Doug is a nice guy and he means well. As a Democrat, I'll vote for O'Leary. He has done a great job in the Senate. Why change horses in midstream?

Thankfully people that vote based on how "cute" a candidate is probably won't be able to get the time off from Barbizon to go and do so.

That Dougie has gotten as far as he has has as much to do with the degenerate nature of the electorate as it does with his "enthusiasm".

If Dougie wins (God help us) then we deserve him.

Merry Christmas to all of my supporters who have read this article and posted their thoughts. I welcome your support and ask all of you for your vote. I do not believe our State Legislature is representing us the way they should be. They must do more for the people. Today, It is lawyers, insurance salesmen, and big corporations with their hands in the pockets of special interests who are running are government, and I believe it's time for freshblood on Beacon Hill. This is what I intend to inject in our state government when you elect me as your Senator. Remember Govermennt is supposed to be as Lincoln stated, "Of the People, By the People, and For the People. And that's exactly what I'm going to do when you elect me as Senator, I'll return our State Government back to the people. It is easy for those on the sidelines to criticize others, what is more arduous is for the person actually in the arena "who at best, knows in the end the triumph of great achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly. So that his place will never be with those cold timid souls, who know neither victory, nor defeat." Doug Bennett is a winner already for knowing the issues, meeting the people of the Cape & Islands, making time out of his already busy schedule to talk with us, and his heart and passion that is evident in his "getting out there" campaign to want to do more for the people and speaking to the key issues for each of the towns and districts. More importantly, his ability to bring the issues to the public or media so that they are "at least" talked about. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but Doug's campaign is not about his looks or holding up a sign,
its about his solid character and his smarts. He has a very impressive education background and if you challenge him, he knows his history, the bills passed & political greats!

I love this guy. Bennett has the heart of a lion and the instincts of a samarai. I know because I met him last year. From what I hear from friends and voters on Nantucket, they say when Bennett speaks, the people listen. Some even say he might be President one day.

I'm tired of our own Senator not performing for us here on the Cape and Islands. I feel he's abandoned us by not voting for what we want, but for only what his Senate Leadership wants. I like this guy, Bennett. He's a member of the working class and he's different from other politicians and candidates I've seen in a long time. He may be a Republican, but I'm going to give him my vote next year. He'll get the job done. That's what people say on Nantucket. I know other Democrats, like my mother and wife, who will swing over and vote Bennett to the Senate also. He's got my vote.

IMO, based on what I saw during the election, Dougie is only in this for himself.

I'm a Nantucket Native who knows Doug well and like most Nantucket Natives I love that man. If you really ever spoke with Doug, because it is obvious you haven't, thus you must suffer from jealousy and bitter contempt. Because if you had you'd see, that Doug's brain is more like Einstein's not that of the flea. They used to throw similar insults at Jefferson before he wrote the Declaration of Independence. Watch you'll see, before you know it Doug will win by a stunning upset next year just like he did when he stunned 8 other candidates only 18 months before in April 04'

I'm a Nantucket Native and most natives like myself love Doug and believe he's the best public servant we've had in twenty years on the island since Skip Cabot. If you really had spoke with Doug, and it's obvious you have not, then you would see that Doug's brain and intellect is like that of Einstein's not that of a flea. But it is apparent to me that some who don't like Doug suffer from bitter contempt and a little jealousy. Before you prejudge on baseless rumors and innuendos, why don't you do some research on Jefferson. His contemporaries referred to him as a moron before he wrote the Declaration of Independence. And like the way Doug stunned those other 8 Candidates he beat in April 04' I have no doubt that this gentleman who most adore while few abhor will win in the biggest stunning upset that the Cape and Islands has seen in years. What I believe is most troubling to some naysayers is that they can't get over the fact that something on this scale has never been accomplished by a Nantucker in our history, and by golly Doug will be the first.

I saw that hot Young Pol Doug at the Rotary again today. I'm looking to start a Doug Bennett Fan club. He has Senator written all over him. He's gorgeous. More details to come later

Bennett for Senate, definitely... That man has guts and courage and machismo

As a member of Dougie's constituency, I must protest the claims he has the intelligence of anything greater than a teenager, or the heart of anything more than a lion prior to Oz. But he is cunning, to be sure.
I have had several chats with him through the years and while he is quite enthusiastic and truly supportive of anyone willing to take up the mantle of a just cause, he is, I am of the firm belief, only in this for himself. His statements both on and off the record are ripped directly out of the deepest rooted hopes we have for our governing body and for each other, yet his actions thus far lack any of his message and continually disappoint.
My advice to the general public is to do anything you can to keep him from public office. It's easy to get someone out for criminal activity, incompetence is much more difficult to prove and far more difficult to extricate ones self from (speaking collectively). Further, while he may one day rise to higher office, I don't feel we should suffer his painfully slow learning curve. Perhaps he should serve as campaign manager for someone else.

Doug Bennett is not only a carpenter with a passion and resume of politics, but he is a renaissance man with a passion for the arts. Having met him, it is rare you find a political representative who supports the arts studies it, knows it, and fights for it. He shocked me when he knew who Lawrence Olivie was. He
helped saved some teacher's jobs (friends of friends) and brought attention to the issue on Ntucket when other influential natives said nothing. I even spoke a little Spanish and surprisingly he spoke back. I certainly wouldn't go into politics, but Doug doesn't seem to take any easy way outs, he takes on the challenge and controvery with honor, passion, enthusiasm, energy and sure a little naivety, but he's got the fire in his belly to know what's right and how to fight for it! He's got my vote, a fellow academic and one who fights for the arts!

Anyone who can stand in this cold temperature for hours for what he wants and believes in, should atleast be given a second look - that shows stamina and willingness in my book to go all out, particularly in the hustle and bustle of the holiday spirit where everyone is running around like crazy - and Mr. Doug Bennett always has a smile on his face, asking us for his vote and looks like he'll fight to bring issues to the table - don't let the disgruntles get you down Dougie, go full force and full charge!

Doug Supporter - And Doug has done...what? Finished his first and only term as a Selectman? Nope. Showed up for important hearings like liquor licensing ones where people had to fly to Nantucket to appear and he knew he was needed to make a quorum? Nope. Learned how to spell or write a complete sentence? Nope (VISIT his web site some time).

This 'Legend In His Own Mind' will burn out faster than a Christmas tree bulb when the adults begin to plan for 2006. His rude, insulting, abrasive style hasn't earned him any friends on the mainland - bet he doesn't get enough signatures to appear on the ballot.

Doug Bennett is not any of those things you mention. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, but be professional not tacky or bitter. If anyone is strategic, the fact he is campaigning from all angles with connections he may not gloat of, a year before November to get his name (and brand recognition) out, I think that's pretty strategic if you ask me!

No, I have not run for office, but I do vote.

The incident with the liquor license is public record on the island, but people on Cape would not know about it.

On Tuesday, two selectmen said they had to be away, but they needed more time for liquor license hearings. The selectmen voted to have a special Thursday session. All three remaining selctment would have to be there for there to be a legal quorum. Dougie said for the cameras, sure, no problem. Next day, he sends a letter to the paper that the special session interfered with his abiltiy to earn a living - even though I am not sure how much carpentry gets done at night! Thursday comes, people have disrupted their schedules, some have flown on island to appear - and no Doug. He just blew it off because he changed his mind, no matter what the inconveninece to other people.

That may be typical of a young person - but I would not want that person to be a Senator.

If I heard correctly the meeting was held during the day and another selectman was also not able to attend so to put it all on one person, that's pretty silly. People reschedule meetings all the time, that's the business world, politics, etc. Not a battle I'd get all heated up for. And Doug is not that young, isn't he about 30 or so. And we certainly don't need another politician that is retired or has a full time gig where their just entering politics because they can, not because they really have the time to invest and are in it for the long haul. This man Doug Bennett seems to be it for the long haul. And if it's a big issue (liquor license) all selectman are at fault, the ones who wanted to have it when others couldn't attend, and those that couldn't make it. Just have it when everyone can attend, simple as that. Private meetings or ones with just a few, that's sounds sketch to me, so good for Doug coming to his senses. Another thing, Doug would never would go to a meeting drunk! What a terrible thing to say about him. He might be sweaty from running, but never drunk. There are a lot of mean jealous people on ACK who should be proud of one of their own giving them a voice on Beacon Hill, helping him, not trying to keep him down. You people ought to get off that spit of sand once and awhile and come to your senses. Doug is a brillent guy. He will listen to all of us. I'm still waiting for all you boring Doug bashers out there to tell me one thing you have done to contribute to this world.

I raised my adult children to keep their word when they give it, be self supporting, know how to spell and write, get facts before they mouth off opinions (no strong WIND on Cape Cod because of cold ocean water? Can Doug read a paper?) and be polite and courteous.

That's enough for the world for now.

Doug does keep his word, is self supporting, knows how to read and write obtain facts, quote history, is a people person, is honest and polite, courteous and smart. And he's professional, he doesn't bad mouth people. It's one thing to just not like someone, but to bash someone, that's unprofessional and not classy. And Doug is, he's a good person who's has a ton of class.

My Fellow Cape and Islanders,

I am very happy that there is such buzz about my quest to become the next State Senator. I wanted to invite all those who would like to join me on Sunday January 8th, 2006 from 6PM-8PM. I'll be having a meeting @ 84 St. Francis Street in Hyannis. Everyone's invited and if you aren't registered to vote as of yet, you will be able to do so at the meeting. Over these next several months, I will make a concerted effort to recruit new voters who are both young or have been disenfranchised in the past to vote in this upcoming Bennett for Senate Election next year. In the past, I have been quite successful at being able to help bring greater and record numbers in voters to the polls. In fact in the two Nantucket County and Town Elections that I've been apart of, there has been a 50% increase in voter turnout. I expect the same results in this upcoming election cycle. There will be a record turnout in new voters and as a whole during the Senate election for the Cape and Islands District. Please come, I'll have plenty of food and drink.

I smell something Fishy about all these Naysayers against Doug. It seems that almost all of you (and probably it is only 5 detractors who just hate Doug because you live lives that have no color and are filled with misery)are from the Yack chat site. The amazing thing is that while a few may not like Doug, not only is he the most popular elected leader we've had in years, but I bet about 90% of the voters love him. If you don't like him, vote for someone else. All I know is Bennett is going to be representing the Cape and Islands on Beacon Hill next year because every person I know is voting Bennett to the Senate

Last night I posted that the voter recruitment meeting is at 84 St. Francis Street. I really meant to say 84 St. Francis Circle. It is near Bearses way about a 1/4 mile from the Mall in Hyannis.

Again I will be having the meeting on Sunday January 8, 2006 at 84 St. Francis Circle from 6PM to 8PM. Everyone's invited whether you're a Republican, Democrat, or Independent Voter. Karl Burns, Chairman of the Massachusetts Young Republicans will be there as well. Come on out. There will be plenty of food and drink and the press will be invited as well.

Sorry I spelled yackon host name wrong. I am not an on yacker so....I know most of the coffins, went to school with a few so; glad to see you all are so enthusiastically supportive. I wont vote for Bennett for senate not just because I am a democrat (even though Doug thinks it wont matter what I am registered as I can still vote for him) but just cant fathom him in the senate. To Dougie Supporter; You continue to ask everyone what they have done to contribute. What have you done?
Just because I do not agree with a certain politician and voice it (as you voice your support) does not and can not negate any positive influence I may have had. Raising children who are active in sports, the community and try hard at school, are respectful and not on drugs, there is one thing; I have volunteered for 8 years here at two organazations and I always vote. I dont weigh my worth this way but just wanted to give you a taste. I've met Doug several times and he is a friend of people in my family. I like him, think he is charasmatic and energetic but NOT senate worthy. Thats all.

I know what Doug's accomplished. I've read his record and it's very strong. You still haven't answered the question NN9G: If you are going to continue to complain then what have you done for the people of Nantucket yourself? Are you just jealous that he's making a difference for the people of Nantucket and you don't even have the courage to do something too? Or what is it? It's alright not to agree with Doug or even not vote for him, that is democracy, but you continue to venomously complain about Doug and about how he's going to the Senate. If you got nothing positive to say, then why do you continue to spit venom? What don't you know how to be positive? I guess not. It's okay, continue to naysay... it won't get you anywhere... it will only get Bennett elected to the Senate.

While all you Nantucket people argue with eah other - have you noticed that all of you put together don't equal the voters in Barnstable? If Mr. Bennett is half as rude and confrontational as his supporters, he's cooked. And a person is known by the company they keep.

I'm in love with my wife. Who is a third generation Native. I think Doug is a polite, kind and fearless young man. He's not perfect. No one is. Am I completely happy with everything Doug has done? Nope. Do I think he's the best Selectman we've had in recent memory? No, I don't. But I do believe he has a good heart and if given the chance he can do some good. That's where I stand on the Doug issue.

I plan to record a podcast or two with Doug in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to YACKon.com and you might just get a chance to hear him address (or not) some of the issues we all care about. I promise not to pull any punches. And Doug has agreed that the interview should be no-holds-barred.

Not only will Bennett become Senator on Nov. 7, 2006, but one day he'll be U.S. President too. Although he is a Republican, he is a Progressive. He reminds me of a young Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He'll be President one day, sooner than expected.

I am in agreement with the statement from Caution regarding the bickering (especially something so petty as which family has been here longer...).
For his supporters and detractors alike, I would remind you that the issue is not whether he is likeable, outgoing, or energetic. He is all of those things. But one of the most basic qualifications for the job is competance. That is where he lacks. Severely. Further, the facts of his performance as selectman fall nothing short of tragedy. He is continually late, absent, and unprepared. His proposals are juvenile. His involvement is sparse. His ability, limited. Further, he is combative and accusatory with fellow government officials. All of this information is public record and should be discussed along with his cheerleading.
Separately, while he may or may not have come to a meeting drunk (we'll never know), he certainly does have an extreme fondness for the social scene. I would hazard a guess he spends more time being served at the bar than he does as the "public servant."

Whoops. If any of you Dougie supporters had witnessed what happened on the Yack site last night, I think you would rethink your support. I predict his political career is now over.

Apparantly Mr Doug Bennett made false and slanderous comments on the Nantucket Yack website against a solid citizen who holds a job of authority here. That citizen is sueing and the Yack host, (Sanders) has removed Mr.Bennet from any further postings at all. I am dissapointed because I had hoped this stay clean, exciting, but clean. This is not the case. You obviously know very little about YACKon.com — case in point, you call it a "blogsite."

YACK is not a blog. It's an online community with 500+ members, dozens of whom are daily participants. All types of people are welcome there as long as they play by the rules. One of those rules is that users may not make libelous/slanderous accusations without being booted from the site. I apply these rules to all YACKers evenly and unfortunately Mr. Bennett broke those rules in a big way last night. It saddens me to have to delete his YACK membership, and it saddens me even more that a friend of mine would execute such an obvious lapse in judgement. I'm terribly disappointed.

And again, for the record, I do like Doug. I dont hate him. I just take my politics seriously and we are in desperate times and need smart, solid, trustworthy, leadership. I am glad to see so much dialong from both sides and Sanders may be right. It usually does help a canidate to have so much publicity. And a slander suit will not gain the victim material goods or money, not what he wants anyway. Maybe if Doug just apoligized for the completly inappropriate language it would be enough.

I'm not one of Mr Bennett's typical supporters. In fact I don't always support him. As a reference point, I'm in my late fifties and know Nantucket and its people pretty well. I guess its O.K. to gossip one-on-one to kill the bordom of the Winter. When I read YACK, however, I think it does us discredit to gossip in such a public forum. This wouldn't happen during stroll weekend, we would still work hard. But now we have the time to make much about nothing. As I said, I'm not a strong supporter of Bennett, but in my opinion many of the negative comments on YACK are dead wrong. I've known Doug for his full five years on Nantucket. He drinks less than most of us and his role as a selectman is very important to him. In no way would he attend a meeting drunk. Some people have it out for this guy and want to use 21st technology to beat him. Those who are so negative about him, are actually helping him. If you have any serious concerns talk about the issues he is raising and give your perspectives. This stuff on YACK is simply gossip amoung a few who have nothing better to do.

I think its all over for Mr. Bennett. The local paper has now gotten the story on how he acted. It was over before it began and I am just pleased everyone gets to see the true colors before it was too late. (Not that there was any doubt). Hello Doug, ooops sorry (acasualobserver). Politicians do not have the luxury of publically calling people out, even with proof, and you(oops) he had none in this case. Politicians are under the microscope by choice and do not need to be perfect, but should be respectable and respectful. Others, such as the accused are not held up to such high standards.
