Did anyone else see the Senate candidate from Nantucket at the Airport Rotary in Hyannis this morning?

Doug Bennett (R), Selectmen and County Commissioner from Nantucket, is running for State Senate from the Cape and Islands District. The seat is currently held by Rob O'Leary (D) of Barnstable.
It's never too early to start campaigning, and Mr. Bennett deserves credit for both running and campaigning. But reading this from the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror, earlier this month,
Doug Bennett, the carpenter who was elected to the Board of Selectmen after a campaign built largely on hollering at passing motorists at the Milestone Rotary, is now hoping to be heard by an even broader constituency.
My guess is that we'll be seeing a lot more of Doug Bennett at the Airport Rotary, and the Mashpee Rotary, and the Orleans Rotary, and the Marston's Mill Rotary, and the....

"Take this Selectperson's job and just chuck it.
'Cause my name is Doug Bennett,
I'll run for the Senate,
And poor Rob O'Leery can go 'suck it'".
Sweet limerick, btw...
Rob O'Leary has got to go. He's just a pandering political flak, and the fact that he's even in office is not a credit to the intelligence of Cape Cod voters. But then, what is?
It would be a very very boring world if it were just you in it.
Doug does more before 6 AM every day than you guys will ever do in a lifetime.
Let Nantucket keep him. There is something odd happening with this guy.
That Dougie has gotten as far as he has has as much to do with the degenerate nature of the electorate as it does with his "enthusiasm".
If Dougie wins (God help us) then we deserve him.
All these guys are whores who end up thinking of noone but themselves and their crooked Mass. hack buddies.
Keep paying your taxes you fools. All those pinheads in Boston couldnt give a damn about you and your needs unless it promotes their agenda and lines their pockets. Jerks.
As or those who would vote for somebody just because they are cute, what can I say? You deserve what you get you morons.
Get over yourself!
Your Public Servant,
Doug Bennett
Nantucket County Commissioner
were y.ou drunk at the last meeting or what Sure looked it
“I’m in my physical prime. I’m in marathon-shape. I will out-stamina my opponents and I’m as shrewd as the hawk…”
I guess I'll vote for him instead of O'Leery too - better a hawk than a chicken.
its about his solid character and his smarts. He has a very impressive education background and if you challenge him, he knows his history, the bills passed & political greats!
He's all hat and no cattle.
How about the brain of a flea. Spend five minutes talking to this pinhead and see what is really going on.
I have had several chats with him through the years and while he is quite enthusiastic and truly supportive of anyone willing to take up the mantle of a just cause, he is, I am of the firm belief, only in this for himself. His statements both on and off the record are ripped directly out of the deepest rooted hopes we have for our governing body and for each other, yet his actions thus far lack any of his message and continually disappoint.
My advice to the general public is to do anything you can to keep him from public office. It's easy to get someone out for criminal activity, incompetence is much more difficult to prove and far more difficult to extricate ones self from (speaking collectively). Further, while he may one day rise to higher office, I don't feel we should suffer his painfully slow learning curve. Perhaps he should serve as campaign manager for someone else.
Doug Bennett is not only a carpenter with a passion and resume of politics, but he is a renaissance man with a passion for the arts. Having met him, it is rare you find a political representative who supports the arts studies it, knows it, and fights for it. He shocked me when he knew who Lawrence Olivie was. He
helped saved some teacher's jobs (friends of friends) and brought attention to the issue on Ntucket when other influential natives said nothing. I even spoke a little Spanish and surprisingly he spoke back. I certainly wouldn't go into politics, but Doug doesn't seem to take any easy way outs, he takes on the challenge and controvery with honor, passion, enthusiasm, energy and sure a little naivety, but he's got the fire in his belly to know what's right and how to fight for it! He's got my vote, a fellow academic and one who fights for the arts!
Name one thing that you have done to contribute to this world.
I didn't think so..........
This 'Legend In His Own Mind' will burn out faster than a Christmas tree bulb when the adults begin to plan for 2006. His rude, insulting, abrasive style hasn't earned him any friends on the mainland - bet he doesn't get enough signatures to appear on the ballot.
Are you some political wannabee who's lost elections in year's past, and just putting down Doug because you can't get yourself elected? Ease up.
Doug Bennett is not any of those things you mention. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, but be professional not tacky or bitter. If anyone is strategic, the fact he is campaigning from all angles with connections he may not gloat of, a year before November to get his name (and brand recognition) out, I think that's pretty strategic if you ask me!
The incident with the liquor license is public record on the island, but people on Cape would not know about it.
On Tuesday, two selectmen said they had to be away, but they needed more time for liquor license hearings. The selectmen voted to have a special Thursday session. All three remaining selctment would have to be there for there to be a legal quorum. Dougie said for the cameras, sure, no problem. Next day, he sends a letter to the paper that the special session interfered with his abiltiy to earn a living - even though I am not sure how much carpentry gets done at night! Thursday comes, people have disrupted their schedules, some have flown on island to appear - and no Doug. He just blew it off because he changed his mind, no matter what the inconveninece to other people.
That may be typical of a young person - but I would not want that person to be a Senator.
If I heard correctly the meeting was held during the day and another selectman was also not able to attend so to put it all on one person, that's pretty silly. People reschedule meetings all the time, that's the business world, politics, etc. Not a battle I'd get all heated up for. And Doug is not that young, isn't he about 30 or so. And we certainly don't need another politician that is retired or has a full time gig where their just entering politics because they can, not because they really have the time to invest and are in it for the long haul. This man Doug Bennett seems to be it for the long haul. And if it's a big issue (liquor license) all selectman are at fault, the ones who wanted to have it when others couldn't attend, and those that couldn't make it. Just have it when everyone can attend, simple as that. Private meetings or ones with just a few, that's sounds sketch to me, so good for Doug coming to his senses. Again, I don't know all the specifics, but not something I'm going to blow steam off off. And believe it or not, people do work at night!
That's enough for the world for now.
I am very happy that there is such buzz about my quest to become the next State Senator. I wanted to invite all those who would like to join me on Sunday January 8th, 2006 from 6PM-8PM. I'll be having a meeting @ 84 St. Francis Street in Hyannis. Everyone's invited and if you aren't registered to vote as of yet, you will be able to do so at the meeting. Over these next several months, I will make a concerted effort to recruit new voters who are both young or have been disenfranchised in the past to vote in this upcoming Bennett for Senate Election next year. In the past, I have been quite successful at being able to help bring greater and record numbers in voters to the polls. In fact in the two Nantucket County and Town Elections that I've been apart of, there has been a 50% increase in voter turnout. I expect the same results in this upcoming election cycle. There will be a record turnout in new voters and as a whole during the Senate election for the Cape and Islands District. Please come, I'll have plenty of food and drink.
Your Public Servant,
Doug Bennett
Nantucket County commissioner and Selectman
YACK is the place where islanders and visitors meet to catch up on the latest island news, politics, issues and ideas. Visit the Discussion groups and online forums, utilize the search option, and follow Dougs exploits over the past year from the perspective of both his supporters and detractors.
Doug is a member, so you can read his responses to his current constituents.
Read the good, the bad, and the ugly. Do your own research. Make up your own mind.
You got that wrong, cap. It's Sanders.
Last night I posted that the voter recruitment meeting is at 84 St. Francis Street. I really meant to say 84 St. Francis Circle. It is near Bearses way about a 1/4 mile from the Mall in Hyannis.
Again I will be having the meeting on Sunday January 8, 2006 at 84 St. Francis Circle from 6PM to 8PM. Everyone's invited whether you're a Republican, Democrat, or Independent Voter. Karl Burns, Chairman of the Massachusetts Young Republicans will be there as well. Come on out. There will be plenty of food and drink and the press will be invited as well.
Your Public Servant,
Doug Bennett
Nantucket County Commissioner
Just because I do not agree with a certain politician and voice it (as you voice your support) does not and can not negate any positive influence I may have had. Raising children who are active in sports, the community and try hard at school, are respectful and not on drugs, there is one thing; I have volunteered for 8 years here at two organazations and I always vote. I dont weigh my worth this way but just wanted to give you a taste. I've met Doug several times and he is a friend of people in my family. I like him, think he is charasmatic and energetic but NOT senate worthy. Thats all.
> almost any of us, (except Yackon host
> Saunders who is in love with him)
I'm in love with my wife. Who is a third generation Native. I think Doug is a polite, kind and fearless young man. He's not perfect. No one is. Am I completely happy with everything Doug has done? Nope. Do I think he's the best Selectman we've had in recent memory? No, I don't. But I do believe he has a good heart and if given the chance he can do some good. That's where I stand on the Doug issue.
I plan to record a podcast or two with Doug in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to YACKon.com and you might just get a chance to hear him address (or not) some of the issues we all care about. I promise not to pull any punches. And Doug has agreed that the interview should be no-holds-barred.
There's a podcast with Doug in the archives from St. Patrick's Day, if you want to hear a sample.
Grant Sanders.
For his supporters and detractors alike, I would remind you that the issue is not whether he is likeable, outgoing, or energetic. He is all of those things. But one of the most basic qualifications for the job is competance. That is where he lacks. Severely. Further, the facts of his performance as selectman fall nothing short of tragedy. He is continually late, absent, and unprepared. His proposals are juvenile. His involvement is sparse. His ability, limited. Further, he is combative and accusatory with fellow government officials. All of this information is public record and should be discussed along with his cheerleading.
Separately, while he may or may not have come to a meeting drunk (we'll never know), he certainly does have an extreme fondness for the social scene. I would hazard a guess he spends more time being served at the bar than he does as the "public servant."
If this gets in the news its done before it got started.
Unbelievable.
In the words of Dougie himself, "Checkmate"
And to the Bennett supporter who claims I 'spit venom', guess what? I still wont vote for him, have even more reason now and you cant and wont change my mind because ..
ITS MY VOTE
but feel free to attack me some more cause I think it takes away some of your stress and your family (if you have one) will benefit. Merry Christmas to ALL.
> news worthy only a place to talk trash behind others
> backs.
This is not the case. You obviously know very little about YACKon.com — case in point, you call it a "blogsite."
YACK is not a blog. It's an online community with 500+ members, dozens of whom are daily participants. All types of people are welcome there as long as they play by the rules. One of those rules is that users may not make libelous/slanderous accusations without being booted from the site. I apply these rules to all YACKers evenly and unfortunately Mr. Bennett broke those rules in a big way last night. It saddens me to have to delete his YACK membership, and it saddens me even more that a friend of mine would execute such an obvious lapse in judgement. I'm terribly disappointed.
> I don't care what these few naysayers say, Doug
> Bennett will be victorious next year.
Is the opposite of nay-sayer a Pollyanna? I think you sorely underestimate the impact this event will have on Mr. Bennett's political career.
Grant Sanders.
And again, for the record, I do like Doug. I dont hate him. I just take my politics seriously and we are in desperate times and need smart, solid, trustworthy, leadership. I am glad to see so much dialong from both sides and Sanders may be right. It usually does help a canidate to have so much publicity. And a slander suit will not gain the victim material goods or money, not what he wants anyway. Maybe if Doug just apoligized for the completly inappropriate language it would be enough.
who is dougie? was he just traded to the Yankees?
get a life, dude, or dudett... I don't even read what you write...
over, and over, and over, and over again..
let me know when you get tired of this excrement...
la la la.... blah blah blah....
if you have anything to do with this man, you are only denigrating his reputation, by spamming this bored... sorry, board.,. must be something in my eyes....
Looks to me as though the Death Star just exploded Dougie-boy.
Your mouth and self serving ambitions are obviously larger than your brain.
As for those who would like to spout about their long line of inbred nantucket generations... who cares?
I dont think your 9 or 10 generations of nantucket native ancestors counts for squat. Are we all supposed to think that you know better than us?
Doug is already a has been and I certaintly would like to see him spout his brainless mouth off on a court stand instead of a selectmans or senate seat.
This is like the fourth of July. I cant wait for the fireworks!
> few who have nothing better to do.
Spoken like someone who has no idea what they are talking about. Have you ever been on the site?
because you are killing him.
Sounds Sweet!!!!!!!!! Bennett can't be beat... He'll leave all his opponents in defeat begging for mercy at his feet
Yes. He will pull out his light saber and smite the evil Nayslayers.
While he stands over the writhing Nayslayer bodies, cauterized in half by his lightsaber, the rightous Tuna, with R2D2 and Chewie at his side will confront the two faced DougieD3 and force him to self-implode like a million deathstars being sucked into a black hole of nothingness.
My wife has a marvelous pic. of you dressed up like a Chippendales dancer at the box on Halloween night...
Nice pic... And such a fitting costume for a public official. The Emperor really doesnt have any clothes on.
If you really had a clue you would truly be dangerous. Instead we all look at you and shake our heads, wishing you would just go away.
Do you really think you Massachusetts people ah deserve anything better than ah ah ah a bloated self serving drunk like me?
Who the hell ah do you think you are?
Doug has my ah ah wholehearted endorsement.
You stupid Massholes dont know ah whats good for ya,so I will decide.
If you dont vote for Doug I will ah take you for ah a a a ride off a bridge.
because you can't be serious.
what do you have against this guy, in fact?
No one will give the poor guy the time of day, due to you.
Is this what you want?
Or is this some kind of you know, kinky thing..
I like to watch. Go for it. You seem to have plumbed the depths fo self flagellation, but there is so far to go!
You go girl!
If you can survive this, you got my vote!
But you will be sore.
really sore
How can you expect us to think you will have the guts to stand and represent us when you cant even use your own name on a stupid site like this?
Oh I forgot, your are a gutless little pu$$# who spouts his mouth off with no proof of anything that you are talking about.
Your silly little attempt at running for senate is over as fast as it started.
WHen is the libel court date,Doug?
Huh? What? No reply?
For those of you who dont know, Dougie-boy shot his mouth off and accused somebody of embezzlement . I hope he gets his ass sued off. This shows us all how much of a self serving jerk he is. He cant even come prepared to a selectmans meeting, he is such a moron.
I will be the first one to sign a petition to get this zipperhead recalled out of office.
There really is no need to carry on like you are all doing. Why not have some respect and wait until Doug comes back here and explains to us what happened. Thank You.
Doug says:
"Look, I don't give a damn, but if you continue to act as if you are perfect, why don't you explain what happenned with "Thrifty", or do I have to call the Attorney Genneral and ask him to investigate what happenned with you happenning to extort $200,000 from the greatest man on Nantucket. Listen, I have nothing against you, but if the public knew why your CPA was strippped from you, I'm sure many Nantucketers would look at you in a different light. What if Chielf Pitman knew what sin you had committed. I've never claimed to be an angel and that's why people love me, but you are fortyplus something who acts like child, and you have committeed a great sin that I know all Nantucketers would be ashamed of. So if you desire, keep being the way you are... because it has no effect on me... it only destroys you. Remember, Karma has a way of boomeranging, and I am tired of you being so negative against me."...bla bla bla What a dork!! Here we have a Selectman talking to a cop. Give him a razorblade.
My point is this: He is running for public office and he just no longer has my vote. I agress with you Sunny, he listens, and his enthusiastic wants to do the right thing but....when he gets mad he should defend himself yes, defend his character, yes, but attack the heckler by slandering him is not the character of a person who desires to be a leader. Because he did what he did, and he is a leader, is it now alright for all of us to act that way? If what he said and did is ok wiht you, then vote for him and support him. He has no party support and is running on a Republican ticket. There are 54 Democratics and 6 Republicans so....
