Windstorm turns deadly

Woman killed as tree falls in car

CAPE COD –Strong winds associated with an intensifying storm system buffeted the Cape today and the results have turned deadly. A squall line containing the strongest winds has now passed through the Cape. Wind gusts to 66 MPH at Provincetown and 61 MPH at Nantucket were reported. There have been several reports of downed trees in Plymouth County, some landing on houses but no immediate reports of serious injuries. Scattered power outages have been reported in nearly every Cape town but no major damage seems to have occurred. The storm took a deadly turn in Yarmouth when a tree fell on a vehicle on Route 6A near Church Street sometime after 2 PM. Thursday afternoon police confirmed 80-year old Barbara Lane of Dennis the driver and only occupant of that car was killed. Several ambulances were called to another crash on Route 28 near Lumbert Mill Road in Centerville. It is not believed any of those injuries were life threatening. In Brewster a car crashed into a house at 111 Dillingham Road about 4:45 PM. The driver was not hurt. Police are trying to determine if wet roads played a role in the crash. A building inspector was called to check the integrity the building.

Persistent dolphin strandings kept volunteers busy:

!vml]-->WELLFLEET – The Cape Cod Stranding network braved frigid temperatures and crashing waves to try to save 4 dolphins that stranded off Chequessett Neck in Wellfleet late this afternoon.

tyle="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt">Three of the four dolphins were successfully released at Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown this evening. 

One had to be euthanized.  It’s the latest in a series of strandings over the last several weeks in the “hook” of the Cape between Brewster and Wellfleet where Cape Cod Bay quickly gets very shallow.

WELLFLEET – For the second day in the row dolphins stranded in Wellfleet making for another!vml]-->long day for the Cape Cod Stranding Network. 13 more strandings today after the 4 yesterday and several others in past weeks.

tyle="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt">The mammals beached in Wellfleet Harbor off Chequessett Neck and off Paine Hollow and in other parts of the shallow harbor. A New England Aquarium spokesman told Cape Wide News some of the dolphins were badly injured and had to be euthanized.

One theory is weather may be contributing to the stranding and word of a major storm predicted for Tuesday has experts concerned there could may be more beachings.

February:

12^th: For the second year in a row a blizzard hits the Cape. This time the amounts were not paralyzing but there were still problems including a deadly crash that may have resulted from the storm: …snow had started falling on the upper Cape and although its not confirmed if the weather was a factor there was a deadly crash to report. Two people were ejected from a vehicle that crashed into the woods on Route 6 eastbound between exits 2 & 3 in Sandwich shortly after 12:30 AM. Because Medflight helicopters were grounded by the storm the victims, 24-year old Wesley Famigliette of Hyannis and 23-year old Kristal Manning of Sandwich were rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. Famigliette was pronounced dead at the hospital. State Police who are investigating the crash believe Famigliette was run over by at least one other car after being ejected. Update: State Police Bourne are not sure who was driving and are still looking for at least one other vehicle that may have run over Famiglette and left the scene. anyone with information is asked to call them at (508) 759-4488.

Victim badly burned in Dennis house fire

!vml]-->DENNIS – One person suffered serious burns in a house fire in West Dennis about 7:15 AM this morning. Flames were pouring out of the building at 191 School Street when firefighters arrived.

One person was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital with serious burns suffered in the blaze and was later Medflighted to a Boston burn center. Firefighters had to battle some of the coldest temperatures so far this winter which caused ice to form everywhere. The cause of the fire is under investigation. We’ll bring you further details as they become available.
