Tax Credits to Consumers for Saving Energy

Did you know you can receive a tax credit for saving energy?

"The Energy Policy Act of 2005, the new national energy law signed by President Bush on August 8, 2005, provides valuable federal tax credits for consumers who purchase fuel-efficient hybrid-electric vehicles and who make certain, specified energy-efficiency upgrades to their homes.

Consumers who employ energy-efficient products in their homes or drive fuel-efficient vehicles enjoy multiple benefits. At home, these benefits include lower home energy bills, increased indoor comfort, and reduced air pollution. On the road, consumers will increase their gas mileage so they lower their gasoline costs, and they will dramatically reduce the amount of air pollution from their vehicles.

In addition to helping savvy consumers lower their energy bills at home and on the road, the energy-efficient products eligible for the new federal tax credits actually lower the amount of federal income taxes that these taxpayers must pay Uncle Sam."

News and Resources:

December 14, 2005

"Consumers have the power to employ energy efficiency to lower their heating bills, which is why a broad-based coalition launched a new campaign called "The Power is in Your Hands" on December 13th. Led by the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) and the American Gas Association, the campaign brings together business, industry, utilities, trade associations, federal agencies, and community groups whose common goal is to reduce energy use in order to lower prices in the long run. The coalition's 20-plus members include DOE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The Dow Chemical Company, the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association, and the Edison Electric Institute.

The campaign will arm consumers with the information and tools they need to manage their home energy bills; inform them about the connection between household energy use and energy prices; and inspire them to use energy efficiency to reduce their energy use and thereby enhance the nation's energy security. The campaign features a new consumer booklet with a wealth of energy-saving tips, a laminated card for keeping key tips within easy reach, and a new Web site, which features resources, tools, and links to more information from campaign partners. The campaign will also include additional consumer materials as well as television and radio spots and placement of print ads in key markets. See the ASE press release and the Power is in Your Hands Web site."

I have heard from an accountant friend that is almost impossible to get the tax credit for buying a hybrid vehicle due to the restrictions and requirements. I would be interested to know if anyone else has heard that?

Wow! I wonder if this is such a new thing that the word hasn't funneled down yet? Is your accountant looking into it again? Just really curious...

She just went to an IRS seminar in the last month or two, which is where she got the information about it. Oddly enough, it had come up in a conversation over the weekend. Apparently, there are certain calculations that are supposed to be done, I believe, regarding the overall fuel savings, however, these calculations are not provided by the IRS, so they can automatically refuse to issue the credit based on those calculations. Also, there is some sort of limit on the number of hybrids sold by each dealer that would be eligible. I am no accountant or tax code expert; this is just what was explained to me. I have personally done no research on the matter.

I found myself referring people to the Power is in Your Hands link you provided today. My boss' December electric bill was TRIPLE last years. He is now on his way home to sit in a dark house to eat his cold dinner. I can't imagine what some of the seniors with electric heat who are on fixed incomes are going to do.

I know and the fact is most elderly people can't deal with the cold the way younger people can. Something needs to be done to get them through... I wonder if the electric companies have a discount for the elderly. The elderly on a fixed income, I mean!
