The Sun shines on Deval Patrick

Two newspaper polls may predict the winning Democratic for Governor race, and the Red Hot favorite in a very Blue State is Patrick over Reilly 48% to 43%

"Tom Reilly's gubernatorial campaign might not be toast, but it certainly isn't the Tuscan bruschetta it was several months ago." - Lowell Sun

Deval PatrickAs reported by Blue Mass Group yesterday, in an editorial titled "Signs of a meltdown" Lowell Sun Editor Jim Campanini reports that a, "Jan. 11 Sun Internet poll attracted a record 1,343 respondents to the question: If the election were held today, who would you vote for: Kerry Healey, Deval Patrick or Tom Reilly? Patrick won with 48 percent to Reilly's 43 percent."

Campanini argues that Attorney Generals have a hard time getting elected to statewide office ("Only one attorney general -- Republican Edward Brooke -- has won higher office in Massachusetts"), and cites the following signs that "Reilly is on the edge of a freefall with the public:" red eyes at the Conte press conference; endorsing the in-state tuition bill for undocumented aliens; disclosing an arrest for drinking as an underage college student; and standing by as "Gov. Mitt Romney's 8.5 percent cut in 2006 auto-insurance rates was accepted," instead of pushing for a higher reduction.

Patrick is reported by The Berkshire Eagle to be a run-away favorite in Berkshire County as well, and that's the most conservative voting block in this very Blue State.

Fundraising is a different matter

In fundraising by the end of 2004, Reilly had $3,700.000 to Patrick's $510,000, but the latter has only been running for three months while the Attorney General has be at it for years.

How things have changed:

When I was first aware of Massachusetts politics, it was common for a gubernatorial candidate to have a background such as...Milton Academy, Harvard, Harvard Law...important jobs in Washington....but they were white. We have come a ways since then. GOOD!

Reilly is criticized for "standing by as Gov. Mitt Romney's 8.5 percent cut in insurance rates was accepted, instead of pushing for a higher reduction?" The real issue should be that Reilly campaigned AGAINST the governor's insurance reform plan.

The primary criticisms of Reilly should not be related to his potential as a candidate. Reilly should be taken to task for repeatedly putting his own political interests ahead of his of duty to defend the public interest.

I honestly don't want a govenor who's place of residence is an apartment in a 3 decker. Is it me, or do you all find that strange. Tom Reilly, Atty General and candidate for Gov has rented an apt with his wife for most of his married life.

I think the fact that he hasn't esperienced the "American Dream" puts him at a disadvantage of understanding the economics of homeowners and wanabe homeowners.

What do you think?

KMA,

You raise a good point. I wondered that myself. I'm surprised he's been able to retain his position as Attorney General. He's done such a poor job for so long, why have we kept him?

Doesn't anyone stop and listen to politicians speak anymore? Do they just support who they think they're suppose to?
I heard Deval Patrick speak once, and was convinced he was the real thing. Everytime I hear Tom Reilly speak, I cringe. And I only have to look at Kerry Healy and I tune out.
I want the next 4 years to be about ideas, and not just about politics.

The unreconstructed South had the KKK.
Supposedly enlightened Massachusetts has KK - Kennedy and Kerry.
Both are out-of-date and wrong-heaed for their time and place.
