A Tribute to Wealth and Vision: The Saving of Storm King Mountain

"Aesthetic issues are real, just as real as issues relating to garbage collection, police protection or water contamination. Aesthetic issues are important. They deeply affect the way we feel about a place . . ."  Scenic Hudson

Photo shows Storm King Mt. on the Hudson River as it is today.

Photo: "Scenic Hudson founders, pictured here on Nov. 9, 1963, at the Octagon House in Irvington, had a vision for a greener Hudson Valley."

It has been over forty two years since the battle for Storm King Mountain was fought with Consolidated Edison and won after a long 17 years by a conservation group formed of people of means and vision, who galvanized the support of 20,000 people from across the nation and world and called themselves The Scenic Hudson Preservation Conference (known today as Scenic Hudson).

If it weren't for the wealthy and the battle for Storm King our beautiful, historic and inspirational Hudson River would likely be one of the Nation's eye-sores.

The Con Edison plant (picture of plans on right) would have been the tip of the iceberg for the industrial development of the Hudson River.

But because of those generous, forward-thinking and courageous people the Hudson River Valley remains one of the most beautiful in the Nation. From its beginning as a small stream in the Adirondacks from Lake Tear of the Clouds to New York City the majority of the Hudson has been protected by the wealthy visionaries who valued its beauty, scenic views and historic significance.

It was not an easy battle by any stretch of the imagination but from it,  grassroots environmentalism, environmental law and the NRDC were born.

NRDC writes in its essay "What Started it All"

"Though many residents of the nearby town of Cornwall-on-Hudson wanted the Con Ed plant because it would means jobs and a boost to the local economy, a few longtime residents of the area -- led by Wall Street lawyer Stephen Duggan and his wife Beatrice "Smokey" Duggan -- launched a campaign to halt it. Storm King Mountain, the surrounding Hudson Highlands, and indeed the entire Hudson River Valley, held a special place in American culture as the distinctively American wilderness venerated by the nation's earliest writers such as James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Washington Irving, as well as the Hudson River school of landscape artists, including Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, and Frederick Church. The Duggans believed their beloved Hudson Highlands were as beautiful as anything in the Rhine Valley in Germany, and worth fighting to preserve."

"The decision was a legal landmark. For the first time, a conservation group had been permitted to sue to protect the public interest. Although Scenic Hudson had no economic interest in Storm King -- the usual basis for standing -- the court ruled that it nonetheless could be construed to be an "injured party" and was entitled to judicial review of an agency ruling."

And now, we have a similar battle going on over forty years later here on Cape Cod.  A battle that could set a precedent for the future here in Massachusetts and the rich scenic beauty of the Nantucket Sound.

Just as Con Ed attempted to write off the Scenic Hudson Preservation Conference as the rich who only cared about the view;  Cape Wind attempts to do the same right here on Cape Cod. In fact some of the sentiments and events of forty years ago could be taken straight from a history book.

But there is one thing Cape Wind and the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound agree on; The way it will look...

--- unless, of course, we fight to stop it and protect the Nantucket Sound from industrial development as did those visionaries, over forty years ago, for the Hudson River.

To be continued....

Ok Magical.... comparing a proposed dam that would force people to move from their homes and divert a natural waterway is a far far cry from putting up wind turbines.

ask the 1 million people who have to move... Id think they would choose wind turbines instead. By the way Magical hasnt anyone told you the wind trurbines are temporary?? after 20 years have them yanked out if thats the consensus.

Capeguy, good point. The wind turbines are just poles in the water. If the energy picture changes in 20 years we can just pull them out. No big deal....

As I sit on the sidelines watching the back and forth debate, I need to relate a litlle story.

Both sides here are passionate and have laid out fair arguments for each side. I was talking with a friend, who is not involved in any of these debates but thinks the wind farm would be a blight on the landscape and doesn't want it built.

Okay, so you say another vote to protect the sound...right? Well in the next breath he says, "if we need more electricity, build nuclear plants".

The only point I'm bringing up is how diverse peoples thinkig is on the WF debate.

So I ask this question, would you rather have a nuclear plant built in your town, or a wind farm in the sound? Just a question!

Really?? ask that question to the people of Chernobyl... Nuclear is saver than what it used to be, but its still a huge risk...go to the insurance company and ask them to insure a Nuclear power plant... they won't, only the federal goverment will. A Nuclear plant can take over 10 years to build... at a minimuum, and not a singl watt is produced until its completely finished... wind turbines can be turned on almost immediately after installation. The wind industry increased installed capacity by 43.4% last yealone alone!! Nantucket Sound MAY be the wrong place for siting a wind turbine, but as for critizing the wind industry?? think again...put your money into wind

From William Tucker's article on Storm King in Harper's magazine, December 1977 -

"Things did not look promising for the fledgling opponents during the early months of discussion, but in April 1963 Con Ed made a bad mistake. In its annual report, the utility printed an artistic rendering of the proposed pumped-water storage plant.

"In an effort to highlight the technical aspects, the artist drew the project larger than actual size. As one writer would later describe it, the drawing showed 'a portion of Storm King mountain missing, like a slice removed from a tub of cheese.' "

My sincere thanks go out to whoever first introduced the Storm King story here.

Was it you Jack C., or was it Magical?

No matter- the parallels to ‘our’ struggle to save or sully Nantucket Sound are stunning [see below], and I’m more confident than ever that Cape Wind will lose in the end.

Interesting quote from web search results-

http://www.pcnr.com/news/2002/0327/General_Stories/037.html

“….In the 1960’s, Con Edison’s interest in building the largest privately owned pumped storage hydro-electric plant in the world in Cornwall, NY led to a seventeen-year legal battle that set far-reaching precedents for conservation. The case addressed the protections of natural resources and scenic beauty as a public purpose equal in importance to energy development, and established the right of citizen groups to sue a government agency to protect such resources…”

Jack Coleman [Member] writes:
That was me, Rhode Islander. Despite the stunning parallels between Storm King and Cape Wind - your description and I couldn't agree more - Magical never weighed in on this until a Cape Wind supporter drew attention to it.
Despite the strenuous protests of Cape Wind's opponents to the contrary, Storm King is not a precedent they are comfortable with.

Magical did a beautiful job on Storm King, didn't she?

It was uplifting this morning to pick up the Globe and read the front page.

We are one step closer to saving Nantucket Sound from this blight and safety hazard. Finally, in print, the airports, SSA, etc., position against this project is offered. Romney- against, Reilly-against, Healy- against, Mihos-against, and the lame duck, Deval-for as well as Jim Gordon-for the industrialization of the Sound.

My confidence is inspired, I think Cape Wind may be mortally wounded.

Location, location, location as the saying goes.

Thank you Barbara and Rhode Islander. The similarity will be our strength and already the Alliance's foresight is taking them further in the tradition of Scenic Hudson by adding the Soundkeeper. Bravo for them! What an exquisite model on which to build a lasting legacy for the Cape.
04/07/06 @ 10:03 am
Jack Coleman [Member] writes:
The notion that the Alliance's
"Soundkeeper" program will survive if Cape Wind is derailed is no more realistic than the expectation that George magazine would remain in print after the death of JFK Jr.
The Alliance's sole purpose from day one has been to thwart Cape Wind. The Soundkeeper program is belated window-dressing, created more than three years after the Alliance itself, so that its leisure class benefactors and more economically humble apologists can call themselves environmentalists.

Jack Coleman [Member] writes:
Rhode Islander, it is more painful to witness the machinations of those who are incapable, unwilling or both to confront global warming and dependence on foreign sources of energy.
Those challenges still remain and derailing Cape Wind will make it only more difficult to deal with them.
04/07/06 @ 11:39 am
Magical Eye [Member] writes:
Jack, Cape Wind is Gordon's (your's and others) pet project. But it is his/your refusal to see other's point of view, unwillingness to acknowlegde the safety risks etc. and refusal to compromise as to location that is derailing it.

My Dear Friend MAGICAL
as you know I enjoy a good quote as well as the next guy... so I was thinking about something CARL SAGAN said;

"The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown."
MAGICAL you have been ridiculed here and mocked and laughed at. You've even been "complimented" by weak imitations and had foes try to steal your thunder by claiming to have been the first to publish points that you make...

Well I would go Sagan one better as to say the fact that some people laughed in opposition to your genius does not make them geniuses at all.

So far the wind is blowing cold for the mockers and the scoffers and you are going to be doused in sour grape juice. Just think of it as "Whine Wine" and have a little CHEESE to go along with it!

You have stood your ground AGAINST THE WIND and even pay to advertise here along side CAPE WIND. I guess you get what you put into it in return.

Little Fish writes that Magical's foes tried "to steal your thunder by claiming to have been the first to publish points that you make," an allusion to two recent blog postings about the Storm King proposal.
Sorry, Little Fish, it was windfarmer's almanac and then the Renewable Energy Revolution blog that brought Storm King into the discussion; Magical was third in line. Odd how she waited so long to fulminate on a subject she clearly knows so much about. Must have been an oversight.

Little Fish, Th. D. [Visitor] writes:
Jack,

Gordon is known to us by people like you that either choose or were chosen to represent him. I agree that we should not cast final judgements on people we don't personally know, but if we all did that you'd have a long lists of apologies to make to MAGICAL.

Frankly you need to consider some of the finer points of how to tell people to go to hell and have them look forward to making the trip... every time you stooped to name calling and brow beating that is the portrait of "Dorian Gray" that you kept alive behind the curtain. I know Jim Gordon must be a hell of a business man and I don't see the "devil" in him. He went to school for communication and worked for the Warner Group he better know how to sell people.

BESIDES I GOOGLED JIM GORDON and EMI and I am here to tell you he was one of the best rock drummers the world has ever seen... Especially liked his work with Harrison and the ALL THINGS MUST PASS album!
04/07/06 @ 12:32 pm
Jack Coleman [Member] writes:
Little Fish, you'd make a stronger case about alleged examples of telling people to go to hell, name calling, brow beating, etc., if you could cite actual examples. Hoisting others on the petard of their own inconsistencies and failures of logic might qualify for you, but it doesn't for me (and I'm a huge fan of George Harrison, by the way).
That I agree with other wind farm supporters about Cape Wind does not mean I agree with them about everything; that I disagree with Cape Wind's opponents about the wind farm does not mean I disagree with them about everything.
For two people on opposite sides of any issue to engage in dialogue undercuts a claim from either side of the opponent being unwilling to consider the other person's position.

To some of the nicest people we have never met.

I shared your concern, love and respect with my bride last night.

We both say thanks.

Have a great summer and always remember how much you have meant to us.

Warmest regards,
Jack and JoAnn

Magical...please go on with the fight for all our friends in Nantucket Sound.

You and Barbara, Little Fish, Rhode Islander, GG et. al. are to be commended for not rubbing it in as the opposition did when Mass Audubon threw them that scrap of donkey dung for contributions.

Stay the course and love you all.

Thanks,
Jack

Anonymous, that is just the kind of talk Cape Wind has been fostering through its mass marketing campaign. Those choices are simply not real. There are many ways to go with renewables and Cape Wind is not a do or die project. It positions itself that way. There are other sites off the Cape that would work like Davis Shoals for instance but compromise would not fit into Cape wind's hype and so it refuses to do so. Making it a do or die situation, which it is not.

Is it any wonder Magical... No one has come forward to agree with your "psychobabble"?

It has been documented again and again that you regularly post blatently untrue statements as it relates to Cape Wind... Yet you continue to post the same old line of bull.

The definition of insanity...

tribal scribal [Visitor] writes:
Sorry Peckham, insanity is errecting industrial platforms in the midst of natural jewels. Would you site windmills at Yosemite? the Grand Canyon?
The Cape Cod National Seashore and the adjoining Nantucket Sound are as much a national treasure as those majestic environments. Cape Wind needs to look elsewhere.
04/12/06 @ 8:37 am
Stephen Peckham [Visitor] writes:
With all due respect scribal... I hardly think you can equate Nantucket Sound with "national treasures" you mention...

Nantucket Sound is no different than most any shoreline protected areas that may prove feasable for a wind park from Maine to Florida...

To suggest that OUR waters are more treasured or scenic...

Is.... Not worthy of further comment on this subject.

Fact remains that we NEED a new energy source NOW... Take your choice...

Coal, Oil, Gas or Nuclear...

I would much rather give up a bit of my "view"...

And share my "natural jewels"... With a wind park...

Given the alternative.

Think about it.

Just to save you anti-wind folks the effort...
Conservation has been under way since the 1970s. People conserve as the price of fuel increases. Energy saving light bulbs are sold for a buck. Hybrid car sales are increasing. Conservation will not make up for the need of a power plant.

Please pick one of the power plants Mr. Peckham lists.... It's a tough choice, isn't it?
04/12/06 @ 10:14 am
Jack Coleman [Member] writes:
Leisure class apologists love citing conservation and greater energy efficiency, as those these aren't already well-established ethos among supporters of the wind farm. Invoking these decades-old nostrums also provides useful cover to naysayers and provides them with the uplifting illusion of being civically engaged and not mere naysayers.

Jack... You make too much sense... That Durkin broad (New Bedford speak)will surely take issue with your thoughts...

And of course... Magical will want to know your source.

Gee... I just noticed you posted this while waiting the arrival of our "Star(s) Of The Day" @ Fanieul Hall... How very appropriate.

SP...The aircraft that you fly back and forth to Nantucket. Would it be powered by wind or fossil fuel?

Just an innocent bystander with an innocent question.

Thanks, Reality Eye, appreciate it. Hey there Peck, another fun day, huh? Looks like we might need to open another chapter in Boston!

Maverick... You make an EXCELLENT point...

It comes down to a "Question of Balance"

"Why do we never get an answer...
When we're knocking at the door.
With a thousand million questions...
About hate and death and war?
'Cos when we stop and look around us...
There is nothing that we need.
In a world of persecution...
That is burnining in it's greed.
- Moody Blues ~1970

Mav... The Wind Park...

Is part of the balance... Only part of the answer to your question.

Because... Without the 'Wind'...

"Innocent(ly)" or otherwise...
We are "Just a(n) bystander with... questions(s)...

Instead of part of the solution.

Help out Maverick... Do your part for your childrens family.

We cannot afford to be selfish any longer.

Jack... Yes, it WAS FANTASTIC! The youth that came to support wind...

Brought a tear of joy and validation to my eye...

~They know... What is is all about.

They were great!

Perchance Ernie hanging around because he was having second thoughts about selling his soul?

Maverick [Visitor] writes:
SP...I asked a simple question that only required a simple answer.

Is the aircraft that transports you powered by fossil fuel? And might it contribute to the pollution of the Sound?

If I wanted a lecture I would go back to school. Do your part and give straight answers.

Don't You Feel Small

Ask the mirror on the wall
Who's the biggest fool of all,
Bet you feel small,
It happens to us all.
See the world
Ask what it's for,
Understanding, nothing more,
Don't you feel small,
It happens to us all.

Time is now to spread your voice,
Time's to come there'll be no choice,
Why do you feel small,
It happens to us all.

LOOK AT PROGRESS,
THEN COUNT THE COST,
WE'LL SPOIL THE SEAS
WITH THE RIVERS WE'VE LOST

See the writing on the wall,
Hear the mirror's warning call.
That's why you feel small,
It happens to us all.

Ask the mirror on the wall,
Who's the biggest fool of all,
Bet you feel small,
It happens to us all.

And he thought of those he angered,
For he was not a violent man,
And he thought of those he hurt,
For he was not a cruel man
And he thought of those he frightened
For he was not an evil man,
And he understood.
He understood himself.
Upon this he saw that when he was of anger or knew hurt or felt fear,
It was because he was not understanding,
And he learned compassion.

A crack across the knuckles for you...

Why not... "Ask what - You can do..."

~ For cleaner air?
~ For a better enviornment?
~ For a safer world to live in for your childrens children?

Mav... It is really time to give up the 'fight'?...

And face the fact: Most everything we do - Is entirely dependent on... and...

Is based on the use of burning fossil fuel...

Does it not seem perhaps prudent to START to wean ourself off...

That which is polluting the air we breath... And killing not only wildlife...

But affecting not only our health... But our childrens... And their childrens...

For once... Let's leave this place a little cleaner...

Who knows...

We might be back as a darn...

Fish... Another great song...

However, I disagree...
Same point:

Both are about introspective thinking and understanding.

Applied to Wind...

"There is nothing we need"...

"See the writing on the wall"...

(The wind is there for our taking...)

"Ask the mirror on the wall".

If we can reduce the envoirnmental fossil fuel pollution that is dumped into the air we breath and the waters we drink and the fish we consume...

Does it not make sense to use less of that resourse when the wind is a viable alternative?

"Time's to come... there'll be no choice".

Stephen, Th.D.

It is late but I will give it a late nite shot...

Wind has been shown to be able to generate electricity at a 'reasonable' (no will not define "reasonable" for you... ~jerky boy) cost...

From not only an economic standpoint but also, when you consider the envoirnmental offsets.

Beyond the 'obvious'... I am at a loss for the terminology presently but what it means... Is that when you calculate the COST that bears on humanity etc from the burning of fossil fuels...

ie... The enviornmental degredation... the related health issues to humans... The infrastructure damage... The physical damage via enviormental pollution to structures including historic sites and artifacts... Water, air, ground pollution... Decimation of entire species of plants and animals.

All this is added to the actual cost of burning fossil fuels...

Against the "cost" of giving up a bit of a 'view'...

And you know as much as I do...

That is all it comes right down to.

Good night Irene.
