Wall Street Journal tells Delahunt to apologize

Delahunt is a "Venezuelan subsidiary in the US Congress."

An editorial in today's Wall Street Journal called "The Chavez Treatment" accuses Mr. Delahunt of being a "Venezuelan subsidiary in the US Congress " and demands he apologize to our ambassador there.

The newspaper says Delahunt's kow-towing to  the Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez who once called Saddam Hussein his brother is the reasom our Ambassador Brownfield was nearly killed this week.

The WSJ editorial begins,

Here's some free advice for Congressman Bill Delahunt:
Apologize to William Brownfield.

Mr. Delahunt is the Massachusetts Democrat who last year arranged a deal to buy 12 million gallons of discounted home heating oil from Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, supposedly to help the Bay State's poor. Mr. Brownfield, a career diplomat, is the U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela. Last week his motorcade was attacked by a pro-Chavez mob after the ambassador had visited a poor Caracas neighborhood to donate baseball equipment. Mr. Chavez responded by accusing Mr. Brownfield of provoking the incident: "If you continue provoking us," the dictator warned, "go pack your bags because I'm going to throw you out of here..."

The print version is on  page 16 of the first section on April 11, 2006.

"Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez" - isn't Chavez the people's President and doesn't he have broad popular support? And, didn't Delahunt buy 12 million gallons of oil at a discount for the poor?

You can't post this crap without qualifying this information.

Bugsy,
The WSJ is a GOP rag and thinks that keeping poor people warm in winter is a socialist conspiracy. As the sinking Bush presidency watches oil pass $70 a barrel, their cronies are congratulating themselves on their incresed wealth. Please note to read the article, you have to pay...LOL

The QP has got it right about the WSJ.
It is probably an honor for leaders to be in trouble with the rag.

"supposedly" - either the poor got the oil or they didn't.

Frankly, I thought Delahunt was a bit of a chump UNTIL he pulled off this deal. At least someone in the US has the intelligence to maintain reasonable relations with our neighbors. I hope Delahunt will be our next Sec. of State. Maybe then, we'd be able to establish reasonable trading relations.

Peter - it giove me great pleasure to share this little peice of news with you:

Political reversals at home and continued bad news from Iraq have dragged President Bush's standing with the public to a new low, at the same time that Republican fortunes on Capitol Hill also are deteriorating, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The survey found that 38 percent of the public approve of the job Bush is doing, down three percentage points in the past month and his worst showing in Post-ABC polling since he became president. Sixty percent disapprove of his performance.

60%, Peter! Who is the strongman that remains in office without popular support?

I've got my finger's crossed for the mid-term, Peter.

How are your candidates doing on the Cape? Any chance for a pick-up?

With the candidates we've seen - I doubt it. We applaud your wishful thinking.

We love ideas and you both have many.

Porc,
The only presidents comparable to W are Grant and Harding. They also were governed by cronies on the inside with only self-interest in mind. They also brought the country to it's knees with their incompetence and dishonesty. Governing by polls is not the best method, but Clinton is not the only pol who uses it. W is equally guilty, that's why he's been so whiny and defensive lately.
As for GOP "retention", there's Jeff Perry and who else at the state level?

Porc,
It is a geographical stretch to call Gifford's district on the Cape. The 4th is an open seat, with very strong experienced candidates to win the seat back to the Democratic side.
As for you chastising Bugsy's spelling, please note your last posting...peole? threi? Chill thyself!
