The Best Fried Clams on Cape Cod

Price can't be a criteria for this crucial, culinary crustacean consideration
Tell us where you think we will find them

clam_this is not the usual "Cheap Eats" column. We're talkin' FRIED freakin' CLAMS here, and price should not even enter into the discussion.

After all, those of us beyond a "certain age" can only munch these mollusk morsels on rare occasions, usually right after (but never before) having a cholesterol screening. So when we do eat 'em, they better be the best. Period.

After four decades of searching on this narrow land, my wife and I have come to the conclusion that -

friedclamplate_01Our favorite is Marathon Seafood, Route 28, West Dennis.

I used to only get Fried Clams at Sir Cricket on Route 6-A in Orleans, and they are really excellent as well.

But in our lifelong quest for quahog quality, we kept testing until we discovered that charming Greek gentleman Teddy at Marathon.

I think he must change the oil every hour the clams and onion rings are so perfect and golden.

And talk about Greek Salad...

Marathon is also justly famous for the best (and least expensive) Greek Salad on this peninsula which is held together by Greek-owned restaurant.

The small one will stuff you and be the perfect antidote to the fried clams.

What is YOUR favorite place for fried clams?

So the point of this column is to ask your help in telling our readers (264,000 unique visitors last month) which fried clams are YOUR favorite.

You can tell us about stuffed quahogs, littlenecks and oysters (fried or raw), and we'll listen, but we really want to end this debate for all time, so please take ONE MINUTE to register and give us YOUR opinion below.

The original Charlies in Brant Rock, MA.

I personally don't eat seafood. I'm violently allergic. This sucked when I was a kid, because there was a lengthy period where I was sort of on my own, and wicked poor.

I lived on Duxbury Beach, between a clam bed and a lobster, well, whatever you call it where lobbies hang out.

Many a night I ate Ramen Noodles for dinner, when I could have had all the clam or lobster I wanted by going out the door and either digging or swimming/diving. But NO...

Even if shellfish is fatal to you Monponsett, go to Marathan in West Dennis on Route 28.

I's worth the reaction ;>)

Dennis is the fried clams capital of the world. Kream n' Kone, and The Original, to name two more.

Puleeease - I had fried something-called-clams at The Original last month and they were inedible.

You're correct about The Kreme 'n Kone if you mean the one in Dennis on 28 at 134. It's great and they now have a deck overlooking Swan River.

Kreme'n Kone in Dennis by far has the best fried clams...wicked good! A close second to Moby Dick's in Wellfleet. Can't get clams like that where I come from, only on The Cape!

I totally agree..... Kreme & Kone and also Captain Frosty's are THE BEST. Also, their fish and chips is wonderful. They do change their grease often and that's why it tastes so fresh and good.

Kream 'n Cone in Dennis and Cooke's in Hyannis are the two best.

They both use a secret recipe for the batter that has been handed down from Leonardo da Vinci throught the Priory of Sion to Tom Hanks. (Ha! I just threw that in there for the paranoid conspiracy nuts!)

But those two are the best.

I know where NOT to go - Seafood Sam's in Harwich. Gack!

I agree with the above, Dennis holds the record especially with Marathon and Capt'n Frosty's.

Baxters in Hyannis is the best and you literally eat them on the water as you sit in a floating restaurant. GO BAXTERS!

Who's ever got the lower prices really. Jerrys Seafood (Dairy Freeze) or Kevins of Yarmouth (both) kept them under $16.00 and of course, Cookes or Seafood Sams *under $18.00

Baxters wanted $26.95 for whole belly clams, as good as the rep is for those, I had to walk away. This was lunch time during August 2006, I was the only customer in line.

Cooks in Hyannis is short on ambiance (although VERY clean) but they have the best fried clam I've ever had the pleasure of eating. The whole belly clams are just the right size, tender (NEVER chewey!) and sweet. The batter does NOT overwhelm the bivalve as happens in so many other places. Cooks it is!

We visited Baxter's in Hyannis recently and found it over priced and over rated. The clam fritters were very slaty and when we sat out on the deck, our ear drums were pierced by the speaker they use to announce when orders are ready. They should move this or lower the volume.
As for the price, well lets just say they could retire at the end of a single season. Between the prices quality and comfort, I see no reason to go back there.

The Lower Cape hasn't been heard from, you have Liam's on Nauset Beach Clam Fritters are awesome!!!Then you have Kate's in Brewster, yum!!! J.T.'s in Brewster incredible seafood. Sir Crickets in Orleans best of everything, always a winner. The Govenor Bradford in P-Town, a double WOW on the food its so fresh its like it just walked off the dock.

Apparently there are a few people here who have no taste buds. Moby Dick's in Wellfleet is the all time rip-off! not only do you mortgage your first born but the food is terrible. The lobster I had was so over cooked it was competing with the chicken in a rubber match. The raw oysters had been shucked several days in advance of my coming to the place and the service was deplorable. On the happy side of life, the fried oysters at Blackfish in Truro are by far the best thing I've ever tasted. I'm still looking for the best fried clams, but Capt. Frosty is still in first place. The journey continues!

If you don't mind traveling UP Cape--Seafood Sam's or Cooke's. All their seafood is the freshest. Or ask the locals. Good luck.
