Scientific panel bolsters key piece of global warming evidence

... that so-called "hockey stick" you've heard so much about in recent years, as shown at left from a graph accompanying this story in today's Boston Globe.

"A signature piece of evidence for global warming -- a compilation of data showing that a sharp rise in temperatures made the late 20th century the warmest period in 1,000 years -- is probably true, a national panel of scientific specialists concluded yesterday," writes the Globe's Beth Daley.

One degree? One freaking degree?? Is this a joke? What thermometers were they using in 1000 A.D.?

Notice the gray line is when they started using thermometers and it starts late 1800's. That's when they had enough global stations to get an average, temp. I think it's fair to say in 1901 the thermometers were less accurate than they are today, and that the thermometers are more accurate now than they were 15 years ago.

The remaining 1,900 years they used core samples from the tundra and other places in the world to determine temperature. Apparently you can gauge the worlds temperature from dead animal remains and it's accurate within 1 degree. Anyone want to buy a bridge?

On the other hand I think it's fair to say the earth is warmer than it was 20 years ago, but to say that we are the brink of a cataclysmic event due to mans consumption of fossil fuels is a bit more fuzzy science. The zealots are using energy prices and the war in Iraq to push an agenda that has trillions of the worlds dollars up for grabs. The truth is that 20 years is equal to less than a millisecond in the earths long history of climate change and yet we should be concerned. I don't think so!

Thirty years ago this same panel- the National Academy of Sciences- was quoted as saying;

“We live in an unusual epoch: today the polar regions have large ice caps, whereas during most of the earth's history the poles have been ice-free.” [National Geographic, November 1976.]

So why should anyone be surprised or concerned to learn polar ice is melting today? Even the rate of melting appears to be nothing unusual. Of course global warming alarmists don’t want facts or history to stand in their way.

Ten to twenty thousand years ago New England was covered by glacial ice, over a mile deep in places. Now that it has all melted could anyone say this was a catastrophe? If only our ancestors had been able to predict the coming “climate disruption,” maybe they could have saved the sabre-toothed tiger and wooly mammoth.

The current hysteria over the “impending” extinction of polar bears comes to mind.

Hellooo, McFly!! :)

I am not being funny or anything, but I clearly remember Christmas Eve of 1985 when I was sweating my family jewels off in my leather pants outdoors (as was the style in them days). I also remember my heating bills for the last seven years and all but one blew dog. 2001 wasn't so bad but I swore we were heading for a dang Ice Age with all the rest. I have never had such bad winters in my short life.

Good post though. I liked it.

I can't disagree with that, I remember a time when it never snowed on Cape Cod. However, I did use the word Earth, and I can only assume that 20 years ago you did not travel the globe in your leather pants :).

Does anyone remember what the last generation of so-called global environmental scientists was saying? That we were headed for an ice age!

Today, their children are saying we are heading for a meltdown and catastrophic global warming.

Their kids will again be saying we're heading for an ice age.

It's all about the grant money. It's all about the big scare du jour.

Solon... Your old fart! - Take in that (slimey) Dem Gores flick & you might leave with a different perspective.

It is not Global Warming...

Think "Climate Change"... I know that is a difficult concept for anyone who may have undergone a 'Sex' change...

But, the overall effect... Well, leaves you (& others) with a 'different' perspective.

Put aside the "Gore factor" (Drugs would have helped) and it was pretty well done.

P.s. My friend... Where do you get that 'better' Rum again? ;~)

It doesnt matter what the temps are around here... there is no ice to melt. however, if the temps are rising at the poles and at greenland then we need to worry. Rising ocean waters would cause damage on a scale that would be unprecendented. It the long run the earth abides...its the people that get tossed aside

Interesting fact that Mark Rodgers would admit that Cape Wind would not affect global warming.
I’m surprised that he didn’t claim that Cape would provide a cure for the common cold, too.

I recently watched a documentary that provided some insight into environmental hysteria.
Global warming is of such grave concern to 14 year old child whom I know that it keeps her awake at night.

Patrick Moore, Ph.D. (Ecology), appeared in the clip by Penn and Teller who circulated a petition on the subject of the proliferation of dihydrogen oxide, in our streams, rivers and in our oceans. Hundreds of citizens signed the petition to urge our representatives of government to impose an immediate legislative ban of the use of this chemical.

Signatories were interviewed regarding the survey. With a great degree of passion they described this threat posed to civilization by dihydrogen oxide.

They were very surprised to learn that they had signed a petition to ban “water.”
