Wake up and smell the taxes, Cape Codders

You won't be able to afford the coffee

dukakistankBy Steve Sullivan, Brewster

Like so many Cape Codders, I found Deval Patrick a very attractive candidate.  My concern was whether the state was better off with a poor republican or solid democrat.   In order to make an informed decision I researched single party government, hoping to find examples of  solid legislation and prosperous times that were associated with single party rule.  Instead, what I found was example after example of  poor legislation and  debt ridden administrations.   This morning I picked up the Cape Cod Times and read that the budget chief for Patrick is looking to raise the meal tax on the Cape.  The man is not even in office yet and his people are talking tax increases.    I cannot imagine a republican talking tax increases at all, let alone before even taking office.

For those of you who loved the "Duke", here he comes again.

wishlist Also reported was the meeting in which a  transition group gathered together on the Cape to  put out a "wish list" of expenditures ranging from child care subsidies to subsidies for artists.  No mention, however, how these would be paid for, unless you read the article directly underneath it on the "budget chief weighs local tax options. "

Wake up and smell the taxes Cape Codders - You wont be able to afford the coffee.
By the way, guess who budget chief Leslie Kirwan worked for?  Yep, Mike Dukakis.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

P.S. I wound up voting for Christy.  The pols with there heads up there butts struck a note that rings today.

Steve is one of the smartest marketing guys I've ever met. I often disagree with him on politics, but never on marketing, and this looks like a very bad marketing decision on the part of the new governor - there will be other elections you know, as "the Duke" discovered to his chagrin ;>)

You're right jakeskid. I guess it's the price we pay for an "open medium" like this.

Consider this; the state has already borrowed 900 million dollars this fiscal year to cover its budget. For all of you in the dark the fiscal year starts July 1, so in the last 6 months the state has overspent by close to a billion dollars.

Romney has cut 425 million from the budget in the last month in an attempt to keep the budget balanced and we still need 600 million to cover the budget for this month.

Granted the lion share of tax revenue comes in on or around April 15th so we may still have a balanced budget, but after yesterdays meeting it appears that more people were asking what the government could do for them instead of the other way around.

Don’t blame me I voted for Muffy!

"Governor-elect Deval Patrick's incoming budget chief says new taxes at the local level may be needed to create a stable long-term financial picture.

Leslie Kirwan says so-called local option taxes on meals, hotels and other services should be one of the things the state considers.

She also isn't sure the state can cut property taxes, as Patrick said he wanted to do during the campaign."

Chill out everyone. Let's not complain about Gov. Patrick (or cheer him) until he actually proposes or does something. Then, sure, it's fair game. But predicting how badly he'll behave? Silly, and a waste of time.

Great article. People were warned before the election on what Mr. Patrick would do. Raisin the local taxes here on Cape Cod will only hurt the tourists who come to vacation here and feed the growing town budgets something we do not need. Now, Mr. Patrick is now saying he may not be able to lower the property tax, he may not, but the taxpayers can by speaking up at your town meetings. Taxpayers can cut the budget from the floor when your town budget comes up for approval. Votes at Town meeting are responsible for raising taxes or cutting taxes. The Town of Yarmouth is presently looking at cutting 150,000 dollars from their budget, I’m sure it could be more. It’s time for the taxpayers to get active in their towns. Monitor what the town is doing in regards to spending. Go to Selectmen’s meetings and speak out on the spending. Go to Town Meeting and VOTE. On the wish list: relocate the Barnstable Airport to Otis is a great idea and it should be done. It would generate more jobs. It could even generate more money for the towns to help keep our taxes down. The bottom line when dealing with Mr. Patrick, Don’t blame me I voted for Muffy.

I agree, Len, that until there's something tangible on the table, there's not much basis for criticism. But it looks like the incoming budget chief's remarks are intended to float this idea and gauge the reaction.

Do you know if it's true that the state has been running a $1 billion surplus over the last few years?

Is there any question as to what Deval is going to do? Really, if you have no idea you must live in a vacuum, minus someone to veto all the spending the legislature puts on the table, plus the few spending ideas Deval has proposed, and reducing the property tax there are only two options, raise taxes or go broke.

It seems to me that the main point of the article is a fear that we will go back to the tax and spend approach of the Dukakis era that resulted in junk bond status for our borrowing needs and caused us to use a high percentage of our tax revenue on debt interest. I think that's how the republicans gained control of the governors office for so long. That's why this should be of real concern to democrats. If we wait until if happens it will be to late wont it?

About This Blog

oped3An op-ed is a piece of writing, expressing an opinion. The name originated from the tradition of newspapers placing each columns on the page opposite to the editorial page. Thus the term "op-ed" is simply a combination of "opposite" and "editorial." The difference with this one, however, is that you can reply immediately by commenting below.
