Two seriously injured in Wellfleet crash

WELLFLEET - Wellfleet Police will be looking to see if alcohol played a role in a crash that seriously injured two people. An officer discovered the wrecked vehicle on Route 6 by the Seabury Surf gift shop about 1:45 AM Sunday morning. A vehicle fitting the description of the wrecked one had been reported operating erratically in Eastham shortly before the crash was discovered but its not confirmed if this vehicle is one and the same. Rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver 29-year old Horace Gordon of Provincetown from the mangled Ford Taurus sedan. Gordon and his passenger 32-year old Juliette Brodeur of Wellfleet were both taken to Cape Cod Hospital by Wellfleet and Eastham ambulances. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Charges may be pending as the investigation continues. 

Blaze guts house in Sandwich
SANDWICH - Firefighters from Sandwich and West Barnstable were called to battle a fire that heavily damaged this house at 6O8 Route 6A in Sandwich.

The ranch style home was well involved when firefighters arrived shortly after 7:15 AM Saturday.

The occupants evacuated safely and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Other surrounding towns were covering empty fire stations. Firefighters were able to get the flames under control in about an hour.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter for the residents.

Car crashes into building in Falmouth
FALMOUTH - Falmouth Police are investigating a car vs building in their town. Sometime around 6 AM the vehicle crashed into a building at 205 Worcester Court. The building houses several businesses including the Conference Table Restaurant. Further details were not immediately available.

Standoff reported in Mashpee
MASHPEE - Specialized police units were called to Mashpee around midnight after a person reportedly barricaded themselves in a building. Mashpee Police have not released any information as of press time. We'll bring you further details as we get them.

Junk blamed for Yarmouth crash
YARMOUTH - Yarmouth Police say a vehicle was so full of trash the driver was unable to control the pedals leading to a crash.  According to police on Friday evening about 5:00 PM they received a report of a motor vehicle crash near the intersection of Route 28 and South Sea Avenue in West Yarmouth. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer John E. Dimitres and K9 Patrol Officer Peter B. McClelland arrived at the scene and found a red 2000 Ford Focus crashed into a flower planter in the parking lot of the West Yarmouth Mobil Gas Station. They further discovered that the entire interior of the vehicle was filled with all sorts of trash and rubbish, which covered the complete interior of the vehicle from floor to ceiling front and back.

Patrol Officer Dimitres conducted an on-scene investigation, which indicated that the crash occurred as the operator of the Focus starting backing out of a parking space across the street at the West Yarmouth Post Office. While in the process of backing up-the trash inside the vehicle shifted and jammed the accelerator pedal causing the vehicle to accelerate at a high rate of speed in reverse and travel over the curbing-across Route 28-striking and knocking over a light pole before weaving back on to Route 28 striking a westbound Ford Explorer then go back over the sidewalk finally coming to rest against the flower pot.

Patrol Officer Dimitres determined that no one in the Explorer was injured and that the operator of the Focus was also uninjured. The operator of the Focus admitted that several old coffee cups as well as assorted pieces of trash had fallen on to the gas and brake pedal causing her to lose control. The Ford Focus was towed from the scene and the operator 53-year old Ann E. Biglan of West Yarmouth was cited for Impeded Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Use Care in Backing, and Operating with a Rejected Safety Inspection Sticker.
