Deadly route 6 crash; Hyannis fire; mother and child fall through ice

Driver killed in Route 6 crash
BARNSTABLE - State Police are investigating a fatal crash on Route 6 late Sunday. The crash happened on the westbound side about 1 mile before Exit 6 around 10:15 PM. Investigators velieve one vehicle spun out of control and was then struck by a second. The driver of the first vehicle was trapped and had to be free using the Jaws of Life. That man was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital in critical condition. A Medflight helicopter landed at Hyannis airport ready to fly the victim to a Boston hospital but doctors were unable to stabilize him and he was pronounced dead at CCH. He was later identified as 62-year old Thomas J. Smith of Hyannis. The driver of the other car 26-year old Kayrn Lessard of Middleboro was taken to CCH by a Hyannis ambulance with minor injuries. Route 6 westbound was completely shutdown between Exits 7 and 6 for nearly three hours while accident reconstruction was done and the wreckage cleared.

Fire at Hyannis apartment complex
HYANNIS
- A close call when a resident of the 2nd floor of the Iyanough Village apartments on Route 132 notices smoke coming into his apartment late Sunday morning. A fire had apparently started outside the 1st floor and started to spread up the outside of the building.

Hyannis firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and checked to make sure it hadn't spread further. Investigators are reportedly looking at careless disposal of smoking materials as a possible cause. Photo courtesy of R. Copley.

Mother and child fall through ice
FALMOUTH
- Tragedy was adverted when a mother and her toddler fell through ice at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth Saturday. The Times reports a family was walking along the shore when the 2 year old ran out on the ice after some birds. The mother went after the child and the ice gave way. Both were out of the water and being warmed up at the Seacrest Resort when rescuers arrived. Fire officials believe the two were in the water for several minutes.
