Barnstable crash; Rain, wind to lash Cape Friday

Several vehicles collide at notorious intersection
Drunk driver blamed for crash
BARNSTABLE Five vehicles collided at a notorious Barnstable intersection Thursday evening. The crash happened shortly after 7 PM on Route 132 at Huckins Neck Road. No serious injuries were reported as about 5 vehicles collided. Barnstable Police accuse 53-year old Donald Mcdermott of Hyannis of being under the influence of alcohol (his fifth offense) when he rear-ended a car waiting to turn left onto Huckins Neck Road. The impact forced the struck vehicle into oncoming traffic where it collided with three other vehicles. McDermott allegedly tried to flee on foot but was restrained by a crash victim and an off-duty police officer who was passing by. McDermott was charged with OUI, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and operating to endanger. The intersections of Huckins Neck and Shoot Flying Hill Roads along Route 132 have been the scene of numerous crashes over the years. Plans are in the works to eliminate those intersections and instead have a side road come out at a stop light on Route 132 in the future.

I travel that stretch daily and let me tell you, it's a challenge! It's long overdue to redo that area.

I always enjoy a news story where the bystanders restrain the drunk drivers. Five times for this guy, no less!!
