Two killed in fiery Centerville crash
See the video report by NECN on this double fatal crash in Centerville here.
CENTERVILLE - Two woman were killed when the red Jeep Cherokee they were in apparently lost control, struck a sign and rolled over before bursting into flames.
It happened about 1 AM here on Route 28 at Harrison Road in Centerville near the Hyannis line. Firefighters called initially to a car fire were dousing the flames when the gruesome discovery was made. The fire reduced the Jeep to this metal shell.
Authorities had to await autopsies and dental records to confirm the ids and to notify the of next of kin. One of the victims has been identified by several media outlets as 22-year old Jessica Hamlyn of Dennis. The other was later identified as 21-year ld Shanna Litterst of North Falmouth. Barnstable Police are investigating the cause of the crash which closed Route 28 for about 3 hours overnight while reconstruction crews did their work and the mess was cleared. Barnstable Police accident reconstruction Officer Brian Murray was still on scene investigating and taking measurements around midday.
Later in the day these flowers were left at the scene by someone presumably a friend of the victims. A card left with the flowers was inscribed: "Jess we"ll love you forever". Ironically rescuers rushed back to the scene just before 7 PM for another rollover crash. A fire hydrant was struck but fortunately that driver was not seriously injured. More MV break-ins overnight in Dennis
DENNIS - Dennis Police are investigating at least eight more motor vehicle break-ins overnight this time in the village of North Dennis. This brings the total number of car breaks which have been reported to the Dennis Police since Saturday morning at twenty-six. The latest breaks occurred in the Whittier Dr. area of Town, an area located off of South Yarmouth Rd.
In each instance the vehicle was UNLOCKED. As in the previous nights break-ins the contents of the vehicles were rummaged through and in only two of the breaks were any items reported taken. It is believed that the breaks occurred around 1:00AM, a time one of the victims reported hearing her dog barking. Again Dennis Police wish to remind residents to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in them and report any suspicious activity they may hear or see immediately to the police.
Wind advisory in effect from 6 PM Monday through 6 PM Tuesday. A sharp cold front possibly accompanied by brief heavy snow squalls will usher in mid winter cold tonight. Northwest winds overnight into Tuesday may gust to 50 MPH for a time creating dangerous wind chills.
