Sandwich, Falmouth and Harwich crashes

Multi vehicle crash kills one, injures two

A firefighter inspects a Chevy Tracker after a crash on Route 130 Monday that killed the driver
SANDWICH - A multi vehicle crash on Route 130 in Sandwich killed one person and injured two others. The crash happened about 11:45 AM near the Dunkin' Donuts and the old Cemetery. The driver of a Chevy Tracker (above) 64-year old Diane L. Carhart of Forestdale had to be extricated from the wreckage. A Medflight was requested to the Forestdale School for her but was later cancelled. Carhart was rushed to a Falmouth Hospital and was pronounced dead. Ambulances from Sandwich, Mashpee and West Barnstable helped transport victims to area hospitals. Sandwich Police are investigating this latest in a long series of major crashes on Route 130. Reports say a Carhart may have been waiting to make a left turn when she was hit from behind by a car driven by 50-year old Christopher Parker of Sandwich. The impact then apparently thrust the Tracker into the path of this NStar pickup truck (right) driven by 48-year old Francine Abbott of South Dennis. Parker and Abbott escaped serious injury. Traffic on Route 130 was being rerouted around Cotuit Road causing heavy delays in the area for some time after the crash. Later Monday evening around 8 PM rescuers were called to another collision on Route 6 near exit 4 in Sandwich where a car had crashed into the woods. The driver suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries and was taken to CCH. After investigation police charged Parker with motor vehicle homicide. Reports say Parker has an long record of driving offenses.

Two injured in Falmouth head-on crash
FALMOUTH
- Falmouth Police are investigating a head-on crash between a pickup and a car on Route 28 by the Oysters Too restaurant about 6:45 AM that sent both drivers to Falmouth Hospital. Police say the pickup driven by 21-year old John Damiano of East Falmouth collided with a Toyota Camry driven by 20-year old Robin Abaid of East Falmouth. Police cited Damiano for failing to stay in marked lanes.

Speed cited as factor in Harwich crash
HARWICH
- One man remains in intensive care at CCH after a crash early Sunday morning in Harwich. The Times reports Harwich Police Robert Hadfield discovered a VW Jetta had broadsided a tree on Route 124 and found the driver 25-year old Tawan Burgess in cardiac arrest. Ptl. Hadfield gave Burgess CPR assisted by other arriving officers. Burgess was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. Harwich Police are investigating the crash and believe speed wa a factor.

When will they put some street lights on Rt. 130? Isn't it about time?

For a town with such a name, they really need someone to open a top-notch delicatessen in Sandwich.

Crusader,

Where will we send the electric bill? People could open their eyes.
Drive close to the speed limit.
Perhaps, they could show courtesy and allow a left turn on occasion.
Cars have lights and reflectors showing in every direction. If people would pay attention rather than playing with their radio or yapping on the phone.

Yesterday I saw a lady reading the paper on her steering wheel while driving.

Oh are the lights so she can see her paper?

Crusader,

Did you mean "street lights" or "traffic lights"?

Street lights wouldn't have helped since it was the middle of the day. Traffic lights could not be placed at every entrance to every driveway. This happened at the entrance to Dunkin Donuts.

Diane Carhart was a wonderful caring person who will be missed by all who were fortunate to know her. I received word today, March 10, 2007, that Christopher Parker has been charged with Vehicular Homicide. We had a wonderful gathering of family and friends at her wake yesterday evening and today during her funeral the church was packed, a true testiment to what a wonderful person she was. This needless tragedy was caused by a man who has no less the 5 charges of operating under the influence, numerous speeding violations, and who was driving a borrowed car under a revoked license. Unfortunately street lights or stop lights would not have stopped his obious disrespect of anything other then himself. We hope he lives with the devastation he has inflicted on our family for the rest of his life...but then again anyone who is so selfish most likely does not have a conscience. I will try to be in court each and every day to keep the memory of Diane, my mother, alive.

Dear slelinhares,

Living in Sandwich, I heard about the terrible accident. Although I did not know your mother, I did read her obituary and my heart goes out to you and your family.

Thank you for your nice comment Buzz, the outpouring of support in my Mother's communities of Forestdale and Sandwich as well as Mattapoisett and Fairhaven (where my family resides) has been wonderful.

Please stop by our new site dedicated to the memory of my mother, where we will be posting info and links on the criminal charges as Mr. Parker goes through the court system as well as updates on our new battle to see the DWI laws in our state tightened. I can think of no excuse as to why this man was even allowed out on the streets after so many DWI offenses. http://dianecarhart.blogspot.com

Thanks again,
Sue
