Citing Global Warming Environmentalists urge immediate approval of Cape Wind Environmental Impact Repor

Massachusetts Secretary of Environment & Energy urged to act immediately
A dozen green leaders sign the letter to Ian Bowles

Click image to read the Cape Wind FEIREnvironmentalists and clean energy groups today urged the state’s Secretary of Environment and Energy, Ian Bowles, to immediately approve the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) for the Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound. In their public comments on the FEIR, the twelve groups said that the “global crisis of climate change” demands that the state “embrace clean renewable energy generation” like Cape Wind’s 130- turbine wind energy project.

The group's statement claimed that Cape Wind will help the state meet mandatory renewable energy targets saying "if built, the Cape Wind Project will help meet these clean energy goals set by the Commonwealth by contributing a significant amount of clean energy to the regional power grid,” in their letter.

Group notes state's authority end s 3 miles offshore

The groups also expressed confidence in the scope of Cape Wind’s extensive environmental analysis and noted the state’s jurisdiction extends only three miles from its coastline, covering just electrical transmission lines, not the platforms or turbines (which lay in federal waters). Secretary Bowles must make a decision by Thursday March 29.

The groups signing onto the letter include;

  • Conservation Law Foundation,
  • Cape & Islands Self- Reliance,
  • Clean Power Now,
  • Clean Water Action,
  • Earth Policy Institute,
  • Environment Massachusetts,
  • Environmental League of Massachusetts,
  • Greenpeace,
  • HealthLink,
  • Massachusetts Climate Action Network,
  • MassEnergy and
  • George Woodwell, Director Emeritus of the Woods Hole Research Center.

Isn't it great to know that some Cape Codders care more about doing whatever we can right here and right now to reduce global wsrming than protecting an old, powerful politician's ocean view.

More important, these people are not afraid to take a stanbd, unlike the frightened hacks on the CC Commission who want to "talk the idea to death" so they don't have to stick their necks out.

The commission is "dead men walking" and don't realize it yet. Their obstruction now after five and a half years of debate and research is typical of why that once grand plan has outlived it's usefulness and should be put out of its misery.

Worse than all the above, the Commission will try to stall so long that Cape Wind will be forced to sue them and their selfish stupidity will end up costiung us Cape Coddewrs a $1/2 MILLION in legal fees to fefend their cowardice.

I can hear them now, "just put it on our tab".

MEPA and the Cape Cod Commission have been repeatedly informed by Cape Wind and fans that their jurisdiction is limited, while the state, particularly Cape and Islands residents, would suffer most of the adverse impacts.

This FEIR is unresponsive to the certificates issued on the DEIS and NPC by the Secretary of Environmental Affairs. It does not avoid, minimize or mitigate foreseeable Cape Wind environmental impacts as required. If anything, this FEIR minimizes and ignores environmental impacts that have been predicted in previous testimony to the USACE.

The Cape Wind state FEIR, just like the federal DEIS, is “at best incomplete, too often inaccurate and/or misleading."

Skeptics Voted the Winners vs. Global Warming Believers in Heated NYC Debate

3/16/07
M. Morano

...A high profile debate between scientists Wednesday evening ended with G.W. skeptics being voted the clear winners by an audience of hundreds in a tough N.Y. City.

One of the scientists promoting the climate "crisis" appeared to concede defeat by noting his debate team was ‘pretty dull" and at "a sharp disadvantage" against the skeptics.

Skeptics Dramatically Convinced Audience

The skeptics achieved the vote victory despite facing an audience that had voted 57% in favor of the belief that mankind has created a climate "crisis" before the debate began.

But by the end of the debate, the audience dramatically reversed themselves and became convinced by the arguments presented by the skeptical scientists.

MIT’s R. Lindzen said, “Much of the current alarm is based on ignorance of what is normal for weather and climate."

Neil, Barbara and Capri...Thanks for all of your hard work to expose the truth.

You amaze me with your ability to cut through the hype and bring facts and honesty to this debate.

Voter A... you say "I can hear them now, "just put it on our tab"." Hello! Has Mass. ever missed an opportunity in the past? Bend over and grab your ankles again my friend.

Regarding your comment:

"MIT’s R. Lindzen said, “Much of the current alarm is based on ignorance of what is normal for weather and climate."

Fanning the flames of G.W. fear, and promoting ignorance, are the NRDC and Environmental Defense who were among the top recipients of almost $125 million in grants that federal government agencies gave for climate change-related projects. According to a report from the George Marshall Institute, NDRC took in $6.7 million in grants from left-leaning foundations and government agencies. Environmental Defense garnered just over $5 million.

The truth about G.W., and Cape Wind is outing.

I love all of this talk about meeting Massachusett's "mandatory renewable energy targets"...

What about the Clean Water Act, or the Clean Air Act? Do you actually think that Massachusetts is in compliance to with either? I cannot believe how foolish most of you (Maverick, Capri, Barbara, Neil excluded) are to think that this "target" is a reason to fast track millions of dollars into Jim Gordon's pocket. Get real.

Maverick:

A dozen green "leaders" signed this:

“...no significant impacts on fishery resources during the construction, operation, and decommissioning phases of the project...” “...any impacts are expected to be temporary and relatively insignificant…”

And a Coalition of 18 Massachusetts commercial fishing organizations calls on Cape Wind to "stop making false claims" about their offshore wind project’s impact on fishing.

“Mass. Fishermen’s Partnership says "Cape Wind puts fishermen at risk"

"Navigation of mobile fishing gear between the 130 wind towers would be hazardous or impossible"

"Insignificant" hazard to safe navigation?

This heep of hype is pretty tough to cut through, isn't it Mav?
