Murder was self-defence claims wife; Person assaulted in Hyannis; Harwich fire; Gas station doused with retardant

EXTRA:  The Boston Globe reported this afternoon that Dr. Ann Gryboski  told investigators she shot her husband to death in their Barnstable home because his long-time physical and mental abuse had intensified, according to a police report filed today in court.

gryboskieyebruiseDr. Gryboski, 51, told police that she reached a breaking point Sunday afternoon when she tried to break up a heated argument between one of her grown sons and her husband, Patrick Lancaster, 50.  "As she attempted to intercede, [Lancaster] began coming towards her," the police report says, recounting Gryboski's version of events. "She fired two shots, striking him in the side and torso."

She appeared in Barnstable District Court today with swollen eyes, purplish bruises around her mouth, and cuts on her lips. Her defense lawyer entered a not guilty plea on her behalf during the brief proceeding. She was held on $50,000 cash bail.  "There are mitigating factors surrounding this event," said Michael O'Keefe, the Cape and Islands district attorney, in a press conference outside court...  See the WBZ video here, and read the rest of today's Globe report here.

In the upper left of the greenhouse photo is an eerie image of old Mr. Throckmorton. If you zoom in and rotate the pic, you will notice how he met his fate....

If a stranger is beating the hell out of you or your son, you have every right to shoot him. But if it's your husband, suddenly it's questionable? No way. This was self-defense pure and simple. If your life is threatened, it doesn't matter who is doing it! So,isn't it about time that this society deals with the sickness of these men who abuse and terrify their own families? As Mary Starr said, stop asking why these women stay, and start asking why these men abuse! It's you men who are going to have to step up to the plate and start dealing with the underlying reasons for this...it's your gender, so you figure it out! For too long, it's women and children who have been suffering the consequeces, while the perpetraitors go on and on. It's time we figure out what the hell is wrong with these men who abuse and put an end to it.And I know there are women who have been trying to do this for a long time...but you men need to get involved too. These guys give your gender a horrible reputation, and as Margot said, in 2007, it's as prevalent as ever.Is it hatred of women? Self-hatred? WHAT?

bittersweet,

DV is an epidemic in our society that people wish to ignore. Many factors-- stresses on women to work, take care of home, kids, etc. It's been going on for decades, & centuries. Women are suppressed; our mothers & grandmothers just took the abuse-- they had no options. Most women will hide the abuse--society blames women. They stayed home, their world was limited to sewing circles, PTA & bake sales. Now women have careers once only held by men.

I knew of Dr. Grybowski's stellar reputation at Mt. Auburn Hospital where I worked during the 90's. A great loss was felt then, her move to the Cape. I'm sure will now be felt by the Cape community that grew to admire her dedication & as one of the best in her field. It really saddens me to see this happen to her & family. My advice to those women in similar situations--GET OUT, & GET HELP. Maybe there is time to save the relationship, maybe not. But foremost-- save yourself & your children. Break the cycle of abuse. It destroys families.
