The Barnstable P.D. officer standing on Route 132 is directing traffic around the motorcycle which is being hoisted on a wreaker.  In the upper, left inset a West Barnstable Fireman and a Policeman examine the morotcycle.

Motorcyclist received priority 2 injuries

bk2_602At 1:15pm Sunday afternoon the West Barnstable Fire department and Barnstable Police were called to the Route 132 near the Burger King and the on ramps to Route 6 for a crash between a motorcycle and a car.

The motorcycle was on Route 132 and the car was a few dozen feet on the Route 6 West bound  ramp.

The cyclist was found on the ground with leg and back injuries and was transported to CCH a priority 2 serious but non life threatening injuries.

The people in the car were not injured. On the right the car driver is questioned and the  cyclist is being loaded into West Barnstable rescue van.

The police say this is a "problem intersection" with a record of many accidents . Photos by Frank Paparo.

I believe this is "Motorcycle vs. car," since it was a station wagon and not a van. Something really needs to be done about this intersection. Hopefully they are fixing it with the 132 upgrades.

One motorcycle crash after another. I think those "Motorcycles are everywhere!" signs are counterproductive--they seem to encourage motorcyclists to take dangerous chances. Why not signs reminding cars and motorcycles alike to drive responsibly in the marked lanes?

As the individual who installed every "Motorcycles are Everywhere" Sign on Cape Cod a few months ago, I cannot understand the logic expressed by deepbluesea regarding a Sign being counterproductive. The Motorist needs to know that the Motorcyclist shares the road with them. Still waiting to hear what the cause is on this incident, though.

It should also be told to the motorcyclists that they must share the road with vehicles!!

Yes, dpie, that was my point-- a sign that reminds everyone to share the road is one thing; a sign that says "Motorcycles are everywhere!" seems to imply that motorcycles have rights other motorists don't.

As one who spent part of his youth doing VERY dumb things on motorcycles I can attest to twoi things:

1. Some of those who ride motorcycles are just accidents waiting to happen. The new breed of rice rockets are faster right off the showroom floor than the bikes I used to race. It takes more skill and practice to handle that much speed than the ordinary rider has. And, some, a few bikers think everyone should get out of their way. They forget that when bike tangles with car...car wins.

2. Many, many drivers of four wheeled vehicles do not allow a motorcycle full use of a lane. Rule: one vehicle = one lane. Two bikes riding abreast = one lane.

Let's all get along, children.

thanks for the tips dad!! The point is we all need to be responsible drivers. Not one more than another. Of course a motorcycle weaving in and out of stopped traffic must be in his/her own "lane"
Some motorcycles--many many drivers???
probably the other way around

Unfortunatly, this is the sort of mentality that gets people killed.

I certainly agree that Motorcyclists need to take responsibility for their actions. However, in many (if not most) situations, the Motorist usually states "...I never even saw the motorcycle.." as they turn directly into the path of the oncoming Motorcyclist.

Never, does the setup of a Sign, imply that the Motorcyclist has rights the Motorist does not.

Likewise, the comfort options afforded the automobile operator is no excuse for laziness.

"Check twice", it's a simple request.

I'm a middle aged female who used to love to ride my bike. I always wore a hot pink windbreaker that flapped like crazy to make myself more visible. The last straw came when I was stopped at a red light and the hair on the back of my neck started to stand up. On instinct, I hit the throttle and up onto the sidewalk off the road. If I had stayed in my place, a man (who just happened to work on my team at the factory) ran the light. He never touched the brakes, even after blowing through the intersection. That was the last night I rode my bike. The man who almost got me? He didn't realize he'd done it until I told him about it in front of the rest of the team at our pre shift meeting, and he probably wouldn't have believed it, except our QA and her husband were witnesses with camera phones.

As and avid motorcycle rider, I simply dont get your logic deepbluesea. Those signs, check twice save a life are meant to alert automobiles to check the roads for oncoming motorcycles before taking turns infront of them.

While your correct, that many crashes occur when some ignorant parent buys their child a 1000cc crotchrocket capable of 200+ mph out of the crate, however a vast majority of crashes occur when a car turns into a bike(cars fault), or a car rear ends a motorcycle at light(cars fault), or a car merges directly into a motorcycle.
