Another beautiful day along scenic Route 28 in Centerville.  The traffic snarled for an hour after a pick-up hit and killed a deer.

deer_598At 1 pm today while Barnstable Police was involved in a missing kayaker  search on Mystic Lake about 1 mile away at South County Road in  Centerville and Rt 28 they got a 911 call that pickup truck traveling North on Rt 28 near that corner had collided with a deer.

Centerville, Osterville Marstons Mills fire who was also handling the search sent an engine there.

The front of the pickup truck was badly damaged and the deer was on the grass on the shoulder of Rt 28.

The owner of the truck was shaken up but not hurt. The accident closed the North bound lane of Rt 28 for about 45 min to a hour till the flatbed came for the truck and Charlie Lewis the Barnstable Animal Control officer arrived to take the deer away in his van.

Someone remarked that very unusual in summer, in daylight and at this time of day for this to occur.  PHOTOS BY FRANK PAPARO

For shame! Is there anything more tragic than a child's funeral? Because that's what almost happened - for NO GOOD REASON. Use the bike paths! Not roads. Drivers are half blind, senile, drunk, stoned, on cell phones, or all of the above, and your child is precious.

A child riding a bike on Route 28!!! There is no end to the stupidity of parents allowing this. Parents who allow their kids to ride bikes on Route 6A, Route 28, or any busy road ever, are the equivalent of parents who let their kids spend the night at Michael Jackson's house.

Hmmmm had to get out the magnifying glass but looks like a girls face to me (besides the fact that I don't know any boys who would wear those shorts) and the helmet is right there on top of her noggin'. Fireman - are YOU that elderly driver?

Ummmm. That is not a helmet but a baseball cap, it looks like a boy to me and I have two young daughters and have seen it all, and I think fireman said he was there , so I am pretty sure he knows what he is talking. Just my thoughts though.....

Capemom,
I am so glad we agree on this. The parents should be charged twice-once for letting her(him?)ride on a busy street and once for no helmet! I guess we both agree because we are moms! I have 3 of my own: 5, 9, and 12.They lose bike riding priviledges for a month if they are caught without the helmet!Tomorrow we will come to the Cape. I hope we have good weather, and I hope there are no accidents! Cape CPd and its citizens are too special for so many accidents. Please drive carefully everyone!

No really I was there...it was a boy NOPE NO HELMET and no not the elderly driver....I was simply trying to let Tim know that some of his primary info was wrong...just want to see as much acuracy as possible..Tim you do GREAT work...but I know you want it to be as corrct as possible too...personally I can't stand when certain newspapers write a story and don't know till it's too late that their info is false...I respect what Tim does and wouldn't want anyone to accuse him of misreporting the facts...Keep up the great work Tim..I know it's been busy!

What happens is that visitors come here from Newark or Worcester and to them, Route 28 in Harwich or Route 6A in Dennis look like pastoral, peaceful places to ride a bike.

Now why an adult with eyes cannot figure out that 100's of cars are going by at 40 mph on narrow lanes which can barely hold two SUV's is dangerous, I don't know.

I think people are just more likely to misjudge when they are out of their home environment.

And I learned, from someone being hit by a car around here years ago, that when walking you walk against the traffic so you can see when someone is going to hit you and you can get out of the way and when biking you bike with the traffic. I can count on one hand how many times I see people on the correct side of the road
07/14/07 @ 11:50 am
fireman [Member] writes:
Almost never on the correct side right?...I think kids NEED a bike safety class Like I took in elementary school!...maybe the parents too..I can just say thank goodness the old man was going UNDER the speed limit!..I went and bought my son a new helmet last night......My 2 year odl has to wear one even if she's riding in our HUGE front yard..just so she knows that it isn't allowed without a helmet!and I make them wear them on scooters and rollerblades..I tell them Wheels=helmet....sometimes I make them wear them on their power wheels too!

Maybe it would help if the adult bike riders around here followed the rules like they're supposed to too. When a sign says "walk your bike across the path", that's what it means! When it says "share the road", that's what it means! A person on a bike is not a pedestrian, and I should not be charged either, if I hit them.

I cant believe how many people I see riding their bikes on Rt. 28 going "against" traffic...don't they know how dangerous this is??? When someone is about to pull out of a side street onto Rt. 28, lets say to take a right turn, they look to their left to see if they can pull out. Sometimes they have to creep out to accomplish this, but they ARE NOT looking to their right - yet. Well, here comes a blonde hottie from Belarus going against traffic and - boom she hits the side of his car...all cuz she is going against traffic...people please, follow the rules of the road
