Double fatal crash in Falmouth
SUV was encountered on Otis base-police say there was no pursuit
Vehicles involved in a double fatal crash in Falmouth lie in an impound yard. AAP
FALMOUTH - There was a horrible crash in Falmouth about 9:30 PM Saturday evening. Authorities were called to Nathan Ellis Highway (Route 151) and Sandwich Road. A total of six vehicles collided. Falmouth Police tell CWN witnesses reported a green Toyota 4Runner was traveling at a high rate of speed when it was struck by a Saab convertible. The impact caused the 4Runner to crash into a Dodge Ram pickup, a Volvo station wagon and a Mazda MX3. Debris from the collision also struck a Nissan Xterra. The operator of the Dodge Ram Pickup 48-year old Edward Kipp of RI was pronounced dead at the scene. The 4Runner wound up on its side ejecting both occupants. They were both flown to Beth Isreal Deaconess Medical Center in Boston where the passenger 26-year old Michael Warren of Falmouth later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the 4Runner 23-year old Michael Catarius of Mashpee remains in critical condition. About seven other less seriously injured were also taken to Falmouth Hospital. The large number of injuries prompted a mass casualty incident (MCI) declaration bringing several additional ambulances to the scene. The driver of the Saab is identified as 26-year old Dale Holzworth of East Falmouth. The Volvo was driven by 36-year old Peter Jones of Mashpee. 27-year old Michael Runnels of Forestdale was driving the Mazda and 26-year old Alicia Long of Falmouth was operating the Nissan Xterra. The scene was closed down for much of the night while Falmouth Police assisted by a Mass State Police Crash Team reconstructed the crash as part of their investigation. Published reports say the Toyota 4Runner was apparently trespassing moments earlier at the Otis base and stopped at a security gate. Guards called state police who have enforcement power there. When the state cruiser arrived the 4Runner reportedly sped off. Police emphatically say they were not pursing the vehicle and say the trooper came upon the crash while checking the area for the vehicle. The Cape & Islands District Attorney's Office is now involved in the investigation. Stay with CWN for continuing coverage of this crash.

Did you here anything regarding a possible police chase through the military base prior to the accident? Could the car being chased been involved?
Stay tuned.
Do you know that nearly 8,000 earthquakes happen every day?
I guess using your logic, we could say "something funky" is going on 8,000 times a day. Not really that funky....hey!
My husband came upon the accident scene less than ten minutes after it happened and he definitely heard the same thing about a high speed chase originating somewhere on or near Otis. He spent about twenty minutes at the scene. Police were asking people if they witnessed the accident, etc. There was one state police vehicle there (the one presumably involved in the chase), the rest were local LE/rescue who were responding to the accident scene. From what he observed (the position of the state police car, the car that caused the accident, and the victims cars), the police chase story looked pretty obvious to him. In any event, a very, very sad event that may have been preventable (?) and certainly should be investigated thoroughly.
These things are the water equivalent of those redneck ATV things, which injure 1000's of kids per year (the highest rate is in West Virginia, big surprise.)
Social darwinism is cruel when it comes to children being killed or hurt due to stupid parenting.
I know the information that the State Police is putting out says that the cruiser was "following" not "chasing" the car.
I hate to second guess the cops and in this day and age trying to elude the police in a military base is pretty stupid however, how many times have we seen police chasing people for speeding or traffic violations and innocent victims get hurt or killed.
This may come as a shocker to you, but people get injured and killed everyday doing a variety of things.
We have the Kennedy's skiing into trees and crashing planes. We have a Princess driving around with a drunk limo driver. We have a famous actor falling of a horse and becoming paralyzed.
Your classifying the parents of this poor girl as "stupid" and stereotyping ATV riders as "rednecks" really brings out the elitist in you.
You know, we all can't take mahhhhvallloussss cruises and exotic vacations. Some of us simpletons have make the best of what we have.
So let me get this straight - from the position of 3 PARKED cars he could determine that they had been chased?? He really should get a job with the State Police Accident Recon team - cuz he has some mad skillz. So, here we go again - lets blame the Police instead of the Jerk that CRASHED through a military perimeter and then took off at an insanely high speed. Even had the police pursued this vehicle - they would have been justified in doing so.
PS Buzz....there is something strange brewing in the universe....can't you feel it?
I blame the idiot that caused it 100% and I'm for chainging the laws to make it a much more serious crime for those who flee the police.
My point is, there have been several fatal accidents in Massachusetts in the recent past where the police were chasing cars and innocent victims have been killed.
In some cases they flee because they have an expired registration, or driving on a suspend license.
Is that worth the life of an innocent person who was obeying the law and is the result of the chase?
I fully understand that the police find themselves in difficult situations, but somtimes you have to look at the bigger picture of public saftey.
The cab driver died a few days later. The car was being chased for motor vehicle violations.
Who's lives would have contributed more to society? The musician and cab driver or the scumbag in the SUV? Guess who's still alive to talk about it?
"
Maybe the police should stop doing their job, because the bad guys end up running and killing people...lets let the police just respond to all these accident scenes and stop all this foolishness of trying to actually CATCH some bad people
You are right - we should let anyone that want to come into a military compound do so, unfettered. There should be no guards and no fences...let everyone do whatever they please...cuz it is, after all a free country....Did you actually read what you wrote, Bittersweet??
That is the reason for the stop but they are most times hiding much more than that, like a shotgun...
http://hyannisnews.com/Greater-Hyannis-Cape-Cod/illegal_firearms_07152007.html
Hmmmm....he is not allowed to have a gun because of a restraining order, I wonder where he was going?? Who knows, maybe to kill the plaintiff on the order??? But you are right, they should't try to catch them, it's safer to just respond to the future crime scene.
This story was on our site too:

And it's not me that goes around touting the 'free country, free country" stuff, it's the politicians. Because if we were free, we would have a right to know where and how the military spends tax dollars. Ever hear of the "black budget"?
It's black for a reason, you are not in the military, you don't know how to run a military, and you do not know how to defend a country... and you DO NOT have a right to know - cuz if you did, so too would the enemy.....your statements prove to us you are not a warrior and all you would do is weaken a nation.
I didn't say the police should stop doing there job. I think they need to rethink how they pursue those who decide to run from them. Especially if the safety of the public is jeopardized.
I am not, or have never been anti-police. But like I said before, there have been several fatal accidents recently involving innocent bystanders due to police chases. You do realize that many police forces including Boston have strict procedures involving chases for that very reason.
I hate those little smily faces :)
I knew someone like you would chime in -- all I can say is that you weren't there and know a whole lot less about what happened to cause the crash than those that were. As far as your opinion, you know the old saying...
You are right I wasn't there - were you??? All I am saying is that if someone crashes a gate at a freeking military compound, they need to be caught, do you agree with that or do you disagree with that??
I obviously do not want innocent people to be killed, but I also do not want someone who crashes a gate at a military compound to escape and do further harm to innocent people - do you?? and you my friend know the old saying...hindsight is 20/20
They crashed the gate to get out...not in the base.
You're correct, they did crash the gate to escape. This was after they blew past the security checkpoint (entrance) manned by uniformed personel and about a million red signs that say to stop for security. Which they didn't - but hey it's only a military compound in a post 9/11 world. The Police must have been out of their mind to try to stop them.
P.S. I'm still waiting for your answer, what would it take to justify a Police Pursuit in your mind?
Understand, I know it's a no win situation for the police. And there's no easy answer.
Warrants are served on criminals everyday in this state. Wether it's a bench warrant, standing warrant or a grand jury indictment. Those criminals are out on the streets capable of doing harm until there brought in. In most cases, they've committed much more serious crimes than those that speed away from police.
We've seen many innocent people killed lately due to police chases. I guess my answer to your question is that if the car has been stopped for a motor vehicle violation and takes off we don't chase.
If it's involved in a felony or similar charge then we pursue with safeguards. Every situation is different.
Like I said, I'd like to see anyone who takes off from the cops to face more serious charges and loss of license and prison time.
ha, you fired the first shot with "I knew someone like you would chime in"
What exactly did you mean, "someone like me" - did you mean someone who actually thinks the bad guy should be caught, punished and blamed for what happened? Did you mean someone who doesn't rush to blame the police for doing the job we pay them to do? If that's what you meant - fine, you can label me "a person like that.
Now, lets talk about your about face - you just wrote: "The chase story was NOT my husband's personal interpretation of the scene (and by the way, the cars weren't PARKED, they were littering the intersection)."
But in your first post you clearly wrote: "From what he observed (the position of the state police car, the car that caused the accident, and the victims cars), the police chase story looked pretty obvious to him" - seems to me that was your "husband's personal interpretation of the scene"....... which is it??
...your turn :)
