Grand Jury clears Dr. Gryboski for killing husband of 30 years

Cape doctor will face no charges
Says she shot her husband to death in self-defense

A Cape Cod doctor who said she shot and killed her husband in self-defense after years of abuse will not have to face charges, prosecutors said yesterday.  A grand jury yesterday declined to indict Ann Gryboski, 51, for murder in the shooting death of her husband, Patrick Lancaster, 50, on Easter Sunday in their Barnstable home.

Witnesses told the grand jury that Lancaster had physically and psychologically abused Gryboski for more than 20 years, said Michael O'Keefe, the district attorney for the Cape and Islands.  O'Keefe said in a telephone interview that he was not surprised by the grand jury's decision, which came after testimony from 27 witnesses.  "I think the issue is one of self-defense," he said. "The grand jury had an opportunity to assess [the witnesses'] credibility and their demeanor, and to question them. They then applied the law of self-defense as it applied to this matter, and they then rendered a decision that was entirely consistent with the evidence that they heard."  Globe.

Grand Jury refuses to indict doctor who killed her husband last April

BARNSTABLE -- The Cape Cod doctor who shot and killed her husband will not be charged, Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said Friday.  O'Keefe said the grand jury refused to indict Dr. Ann Marie Gryboski, who police said shot her husband, Patrick Lancaster, 50.

“Dr. Gryboski was the recipient of both psychological and physical abuse by her husband for over 20 years,” O’Keefe said in a press release. “In the early years of this abuse, he threatened her with harm to herself and their children as well as any police who might respond were she to call police.”  ... Just out of curiosity,do you think if this was a man who killed his wife after years of abuse that we would be having this discussion?NO,because this country assumes that women are incapable of defending themselves without a gun! That woman should be brought up on charges.Hell if it were ME who shot my husband I'd be in jail for a long time.Whether he was abusive or not.The DR.is free due to a few things in my opinion.Number one,her relationship with people in office, and her status as a DR here on Cape. For a woman of great means she certainly didn't try to use any of the resources on Cape Cod that are there to keep this from happening.I've had to use them myself and SHE of all people would have been treated with the utmost respect and DIscreteness..It's not like anyone would have gone screaming through the streets that she came for help.I just think she is using her own worry of scarring her record to justify killing her husband.I don't care who you are.You CAN LEAVE!If you choose to.But thats a choice she didn't make. And now she is free.

The grand jury, after having heard all the evidence presented, has spoken.

Off-side rants and conspiracy theories don't count in a land of law.

At least OJ got off after a trial. Does anyone actually know how a Grand Jury works? There is no defense present, only evidence presented by the State. This, therefore would have to be the outcome the DA wanted. "Any prosecutor who wanted to could indict a ham sandwich."

To Solon,

I am sorry, but your last comment was just hilarious. "The Law has spoken"...Yeah, it also spoke with 100 million dollars to those 3 men that spent 30 years in jail, because of your Law Enforcement! You better get a cup and a red and white cane and go walk the streets, sport.

Do you know how a murder investigation works? Do you care? We had a murder, a body, a witness (son), a crime scene and murder weapon (legal), a full and immediate confession. We also had a documented history of spousal abuse and coercion. Do you think the prosecution should have tried to invent alternative events just to satisfy the malicious conspiracy theorists who cannot take things at face value?

If you actually think O'Keefe should have presented anything other than what the evidence indicates happened you are asking that he lie, invent, conceal, persecute, file false charges and reports, alter and/or conceal and/or fabricate evidence. But he appears not to have done and still you like hinting that he has done awful things in this case. You give conspiracy theories a bad name.

So how soon does AG come back to practice medicine on the Cape? Or will she move away and practice elsewhere?

I can't imagine she would be able to receive total absolution, especially by some of the male population. I wonder how many of her male patients will return? And will she be frequenting the same community events as the DA? Maybe he thinks he's scored points with the female population since his treatment of CW. But would an uneducated, lower/middle class woman who falls into the same tragic fate as AG be granted immunity of prosecution? Cape Cod locals have much to talk about this week. I just wonder how warm a reception AG will get by her Cape Cod neighbors, co-workers and patients.

If a trial did take place, what would it have revealed?

Clamshelli,

Glad I was able to make you laugh. "The law has spoken"? Just whom are you quoting? I did not write that.

Misquoting someone to make your own dubious point merely proves what I said..."Offside rants...don't count," SPORT.

Funny, those words describe to a T what many people think happened at the McCowen trial!
