Pilgrim Monument turns 100 today

PROVINCETOWN - A day of festivities will take place in Provincetown as the Cape Cod community celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Pilgrim Monument.

The granite structure that towers over the town was built in 1907 as a tribute to the Pilgrims' first landfall on November 21, 1620.

After spending five weeks on the sandy tip, the Pilgrims sailed the Mayflower across Cape Cod Bay to Plymouth.  ...  WPRI.com

Towns win some, lose some
Barnstable & Plymouth counties rank high in per capita Lottery revenue

A cup of coffee, a tank of gas and $700 in Lottery tickets, please. That's what the Massachusetts Lottery is bringing in annually per resident.

Of the 324 cities and towns that sell Lottery products, the 20 municipalities with the highest per capita Lottery revenue are concentrated in Barnstable, Plymouth, Norfolk and Essex counties.

But Geoffrey Beckwith, executive director of the Massachusetts Municipal Association, said per capita sales in border and tourist towns may be inflated by sales to non-residents, which the state does not track.  ...  MetroWest Daily News

Celebration on tap for anniversary of historic Ernestina voyage

When the Republic of Cape Verde gifted the Ernestina to the people of the United States 25 years ago, New Bedford seaman Norman Gomes helped sail the historic schooner from Mindelo, Cape Verde to Newport, R.I.

Joining him on the 38-day repatriation voyage were five Americans, eight Cape Verdeans, four pigs and 30 chickens.

The animals were slaughtered for meals and later salted, a necessity given that there was no refrigeration aboard the ship. Such was the case throughout most of the Ernestina's varied career as a Grand Banks fishing vessel, arctic explorer and Cape Verde packet ship. ... SouthCoastToday.com
