War against Delahunt & Kennedy; New Bedford sleigh ride to Woods Hole

A half-hour water journey ends traffic grief

The semi-luxurious fast ferry, by contrast, whisks a person across to Woods Hole in less time than anything but a helicopter mightNEW BEDFORD — Mayor Scott W. Lang called it a "sleigh ride," an over-in-a-blink transit of Buzzards Bay to Woods Hole Monday morning to show local media the wonders of a watery shortcut to the "transportation hub" of Cape Cod.

"We're going to have a lot of fun this morning," he told the 75 guests, media representatives and crew who rode free of charge during the two-week introductory period for the new service. (About half as many didn't make the return trip, waiting instead for the evening run)...  Standard-Times

Greenpeace ads prod pols: Push windmill plan
Ad war against U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Rep. William Delahunt

Greenpeace is waging an ad war against U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Rep. William Delahunt. The international environmental group has launched new 30-second television ads to drum up support for the controversial Cape Wind electricity project off the coast of Massachusetts.

Though the ads - playing on local broadcast and cable channels through mid-September - don’t mention the two Massachusetts Democrats by name, they do flash the duo’s photos and point out they’re opposing the windmill project heavily supported by environmental groups. “Now we need our leaders to do the right thing,” intones the ad, claiming 80 percent of Massachusetts residents in polls favor building 130 giant turbines off the shore of Cape Cod and the Islands...  Boston Herald

Case shows progress amid deadly statistics

More on the Gryboski case

Pure self-defense, her lawyer said. Years and years of physical and emotional battering, said nearly 30 witnesses before a Barnstable County grand jury.

But those who work in domestic violence cases said yesterday that not so many years ago - try 15, certainly 20 - that would not have been enough to free Dr. Ann Gryboski, a Cape Cod physician who admitted shooting her husband in their home last Easter after he attacked her when she tried to break up a fight between him and their grown son.

Her freedom, they said, was not won because she had the wherewithal to hire Kevin Reddington, a top-notch lawyer, to plead her case. Or because she appeared in court bruised and battered the day after the killing - a result, Gryboski said, of her husband pummeling her as she drove her Saab with their toddler grandson in the back seat.  ... Boston Herald

Cicadas are singing now, but wait till next year

Pockets on Cape should expect thousands

It's a sound signaling the season and the dog days of summer - the plaintive drone of the annual cicada, seldom seen but always heard, now at the height of its summer song.

The song, which has been compared to the sound of a distant buzzsaw lasting a minute at a time, is not a lot of hot air.

A fairly large insect in comparison to others common to the area - usually two to three inches in size - the males emit their powerful tune through organs called "tympana" located at the base of their abdomens. The tympana consists of a series of three membranes inside a resonating chamber. ... The Sun Chronicle

Research cranberry bog on tap for Wareham

WAREHAM - An 11-acre research bog will be unveiled by Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Ian Bowles at the 120th annual meeting of the Cape Cod Cranberry Grower's Association today. The event at the UMass Cranberry station is expected to draw 300 growers. Registration begins at 9 a.m.; the actual meeting begins at 11:30 a.m.

Another special guest is the President of National Farmers Union Tom Buis. The renovation of the bog was a collaboration between federal, state and cranberry industry partners to rebuild the existing bog and turn it into an industry model of innovation and high yielding varieties.  SouthCoastDaily.com

I always thought that the Hell's Angels clubhouse in Buzzards Bay was well-located insofar as getting to 3 or 4 highways quickly goes.

I'd love it if they put a ferry in Buzz Bay. I used to scoot all over Boston on the water shuttle when I was teaching. It was like 75 cents a head, I think.
