Cape Doc steals meds for dying pooch; Mitt changes abortion stand - again; Dr. Gryboski talks about her realtionship with murdered husband

Doctor speaks about slaying husband
Comments on being in abusive relationship

grylibrary2_199
"Once in an abusive relationship, no one can simply just leave," Gryboski said, appearing stoic as she sat next to her attorney, Kevin Reddington.
BROCKTON -- Cape Cod doctor Ann Gryboski spoke publicly yesterday for the first time since fatally shooting her husband in self-defense last April, saying that she is relieved she won't have to face a trial and that she looks forward to returning to her practice.

Last Friday, a grand jury decided not to charge Gryboski, 51, with the slaying of her husband -- Patrick Lancaster, 50 -- in their Barnstable home. Witnesses testified that he had physically and psychologically abused her for more than 20 years, sometimes leaving visible scars on her face or body and often berating her at gatherings.

"Fortunately, most do not need to defend themselves and their family in the manner that I had to," Gryboski said. "Sadly, too many are seriously injured or murdered. Many more continue to live in fear and harm's way, whether they stay or leave"... She declined to take questions after her statement and left the room, leaving Reddington to field questions...  Globe

Doctor who killed husband talks about abuse
See video of her statement

BROCKTON -- A Cape Cod doctor cleared of charges in her husband's slaying spoke out Thursday about the abuse she tolerated for years.  NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that a grand jury refused to indict Ann Gryboski in the death of her husband, Patrick Lancaster, of more than 20 years.

Her defense attorney said he presented strong evidence to the grand jury, including medical and dental records of the many injuries Gryboski suffered at the hands of her husband.   ...  WCVB5 (watch video on the WCVB site)

Wareham Police under fire for teen rowdiness in Onset

WAREHAM - Police are dodging allegations from selectmen of mismanagement and complaints from merchants about rowdiness and unruly conduct by young teens this summer in Onset.

"It has been a rough summer, mostly related to the management of the (police) budget," Selectman James Potter

"It has been a rough summer, mostly related to the management of the (police) budget," Selectman James Potter said Thursday.

He said there have been more assaults and more congregating this summer than in past years.

"The difference this year is it is more noticeable and people are feeling it more," he said. "It is also not being addressed as quickly or not at all."

Budget problems this year in Wareham prevented police from hiring 10 seasonal officers as they have in years past.  ...  SouthCoastToday.com

Cape doc: I stole meds for sick dog
Brodsky’s dog had cancer. "I was just trying to help the guy out” - Tracy Risley

A Cape Cod doctor desperate to help his ailing dog admitted yesterday that he made a back-door bargain with a veterinarian who agreed to treat his pet at a discount if he pilfered the painkillers for his pooch’s operation.  Dr. Drew Brodsky, 50, was fined $2,500 by the Board of Registration in Medicine yesterday for the August 2003 deal he admitted he made with veterinarian Tracy Risley.

Brodsky told Risley he was having “financial difficulties” and offered to provide his own anesthesia in exchange for a cheaper rate for a surgery on his dog’s leg, according to a document released by the board yesterday...  Herald.

Romney switches on abortion--again
Overturn Roe vs Wade then let states decide

Y

ou wouldn't think it was possible, but Mitt Romney has changed his position on abortion rights yet again.  Just two weeks ago he said he favored a constitutional amendment to ban abortion nationwide. Now he says he's wants to see Roe v. Wade overturned, after which the matter would be left up to the states.

The Romney campaign, naturally, denies that there's any inconsistency here. And there isn't: You never have any idea what position he's going to take, and he's been absolutely consistent about that. (Via the Weekly Dig.)   MediaNation.

Stunt pilot throws Standard-Times reporter for a loop

FALMOUTH - This is why I became a journalist.  Not everyone gets to fly with an elite military aerobatics team, doing torque rolls and loops over Buzzards Bay, feeling the full force of five G's bearing down on every square inch of your body.

It was an exhilarating - if slightly terrifying - experience.

I was fortunate enough - or dumb enough, depending on one's perspective - to fly Thursday afternoon with the Air National Guard's "Guarding America, Defending Freedom" aerobatics team. The ANG team is one of several units performing this weekend at the Cape Cod Air Show and Open House, which is being held at the Massachusetts Military Reservation.  ...  Standard Times

The 2007 Cape Cod Air Show will take place this Saturday and Sunday, August 25 & 26, gates open at 8am. Visit the official website here.

Library trustees fire back at board
Complaints filed against selectmen

The Wareham Board of Library Trustees has launched a legal counterattack on the selectmen, who have demanded that the trustees turn over records relating to the library's $350,000 endowment.

New Bedford attorney Philip Beauregard, on behalf of the trustees, filed a complaint in Plymouth Superior Court on Friday against each of the selectmen, for actions they took against the trustees during the past month.

First, selectmen abruptly dismissed the entire Board of Library Trustees on July 24, on grounds that members had not been properly appointed under the town charter. Town Counsel Elizabeth Corbo had been asked for her opinion of the appointments, and she agreed with the selectmen's position.  ...  Boston Globe
