‘That's where I sail'

ProjoKennedy's statement contradicted by his own words

By James E. Liedell

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's Aug. 30 letter to the editor of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette stated he did not give "windmills on the horizon will spoil the view" as a key reason for his opposition to the Cape Wind project.

It is disappointing that Mr. Kennedy totally ignores Cape Wind's environmental, health, economic, security and other benefits to Massachusetts individuals, towns and businesses. But his statement was contradicted by his own words -- "the sight of wind turbines bothers me" -- to me at a Boston Pops Concert in Hyannis. Mr. Kennedy also told me, "That's also where I sail, and I don't want to see them." Most opponents similarly identify the real or purported effects on their view as their key objection, although most have never seen an offshore wind turbine.

The visual complaint is one of the few arguments opponents have. State and federal governmental reviews have found few significant faults, and many powerful benefits.

Mr. Kennedy also claimed Cape Wind will "seize 25 square miles of public lands and waters." But Cape Wind's turbine towers and service platform would occupy less than two acres -- leaving 99.99 percent of the 25 square miles for others' use. The towers would be one-third to one-half mile apart. Cape Wind will pay a large lease fee, 27 percent of which will go to Massachusetts.

It is disappointing that Mr. Kennedy totally ignores Cape Wind's environmental, health, economic, security and other benefits to Massachusetts individuals, towns and businesses.

It's all about the view for Mr Kennedy. Remember, he has two favorite pastimes.....sailing and Bombay Saphire with 2 limes. You and I may see 130 turbines, but combine his two passions and he may see double the turbines. You try sailing the Maya through a maze of churning blades.

Come to think of it, Cape Wind's turbines could pose a threat to public safety - if Ted Kennedy is sailing anywhere near them.

Jack, reading between the lines, I suspect that you're willing to sacrifice a few turbines - for the greater good of all…

deltaman, if you're asking whether I'd lose sleep over the number of turbines dropping from 130 to 100 or 75 to get the project built, no, I wouldn't. Problem is, Cape Wind has long maintained that the project is not economically viable with fewer turbines. And does anyone believe that Ted Kennedy and the Alliance would roll over after such a reduction? No way in hell.

No, Jack, I just acknowledged sensing the barest of hints, that you'd consider it an unfortunate but acceptable loss if Teddy were to someday tangle with a few of 'em while traversing the sound under full sail… (Windmills of My Mind…)

Your radar's off once again, deltaman. If Sen. Kennedy had just such an accident, I'd be among the first to lend a hand. And to borrow a line from Barney Frank, I'd hate myself in the morning.

My hat's off to you, Jack!; you certainly manage to hang with a diverse bunch! (Apart from a shared proclivity for inopportune drawer-dropping, reputed to some of them…)

Hey, B'sweet!

Deltawoman & I just returned from our early evening walk with them & we were laffin' our @sses off the whole time; Sometimes, chaos serves up its own rewards… (I've caught recent rumblings that leashes are now frowned-upon for controlling 19 month-old kids; if you've already cut way-back on refined sugar, then consider using my ol' standby - Duct Tape! )

Better yet, B' - If you can catch Wôpanâshqâ @ a rare moment when she's not similarly busy, she might have some even more-practical suggestions…)

Yeah, i know...the problem is getting home and trying to do everything at once...and come to think of it, he did have some ice cream.... duct tape. That's funny. Oh well, it always passes, and then everything is ok again. But, suggestions are always welcome!!

About This Blog

oped3An op-ed is a piece of writing, expressing an opinion. The name originated from the tradition of newspapers placing each columns on the page opposite to the editorial page. Thus the term "op-ed" is simply a combination of "opposite" and "editorial." The difference with this one, however, is that you can reply immediately by commenting below.
