New movie about a Cape church shut down; Kennedy on Romney's "Faith"; Vineyard passes on Cape candidates

About Noelle

Shot on location in Cape Cod, Noëlle was originally produced under the title Mrs. Worthington's Party by Volo Films and won two awards at the 2006 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival for Best Director and Best American Indie 1st Runner Up.
Holy men behaving badly
Church 'hit man' sent to shut down Cape Cod parish questions his faith in clever, compelling 'Noelle'

We've come to expect the pious, the warm and the sentimental from the recent run of films aimed at the Christian moviegoer. But that has typically made for pretty bland cinema.  "Noelle" is the first movie in this genre to add wit to the recipe. It's clever, well-acted and almost-but-not-quite edgy.

This holiday film is set in a dying Catholic parish on Cape Cod and asks hard questions about abstinence, abortion, misuse of church funds and alcohol abuse. It has Catholic priests behaving badly.

No, not that badly.

And it dares to be funny...  Journal Star.

Taking Romney on faith

Dan Kennedy did his usual superb job analysing Mitt Romny's "Failh" speech on Thurday.  While the entire column is well worth reading, his second point should pique your interest:

Hypocrisy watch. Romney argues for the right of Mormons to be full partners in the political process, but he has no problem throwing non-believers over the side of the boat:

And you can be certain of this: Any believer in religious freedom, any person who has knelt in prayer to the Almighty, has a friend and ally in me. And so it is for hundreds of millions of our countrymen: we do not insist on a single strain of religion — rather, we welcome our nation's symphony of faith.

Govenor, I'm not an atheist, and I don't mind seeing crèches on public property. But, on a more substantive level, freedom of religion also means freedom from religion.

Of course, we're also still awaiting word on whether Romney actually said he would not name a Muslim to his Cabinet if he's elected president...  Media Nation.

Vineyard Commission Starts Over Again, Launching Fresh Search for a Manager
Two Cape Cod applicants appear to be out of the running

After a process that has gone through fits and starts since September, the Dukes County Commission decided this week to readvertise for a new county manager.  At a meeting on Wednesday night the county commission could not reach a majority vote on any of the three final candidates for the job.

“We are betwixt and between with the candidates we have,” said county commissioner Tristan Israel, who is also a Tisbury selectman. The comment came just before the commission took a vote on the three finalists — two from Cape Cod and one from the Vineyard.  The meeting was the second held to discuss finalists Thomas Bernardo of Chatham, Troy Clarkson of Falmouth and Russell Smith of Aquinnah. The candidates were interviewed on Nov. 10...  Gazette

In spite of incredible fawning and congratulating by MSNBC commentators Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews, “he hit it out of the park,” the “Faith” speech by Mitt Romney seems to have missed the mark in many ways. First of all, any of the presidential candidates could have given this speech, which essentially affirms one’s belief in God and the Creator’s historical importance to the nation. Secondly, it teaches us virtually nothing about Mormonism, a a strange and secretive denomination Thirdly, it appears to declare war on the separation of church and state, a concept which President Kennedy promoted as a centerpiece of his remarks. I see a lot of self serving hypocrisy in the speech.

Opinionator; I agree with you on everything except saying Mormonism is a "strange and secretive" denomination.

A Catholic calling Mormons "strange"?

I'll tell you what's strange:

1. Believing there's an invisible man in the sky who controls everything

2. Believing that a virgin got pregnant

3. Believing that a man can actually be abstinent, including masturbation

4. Believing that wine is blood and bread is flesh

5. Believing that a newborn baby is sinful

6. Believing that birth control is a bad thing

Oh, wait, that's Catholicism. So what if the Mormons wear weird underwear and used to be polygamists and think coffee is sinful?

Romney is the lowest in the polls for a reason. Catholic hangups, Mormon hangups, same difference. Religion has no place in politics. And not kidding, there is truly an Oprah-Osama tour. There's nothing some won't stump, stoop, to for votes. Republicans, vote Guilliani, NOT Thompson. If Guilliani could turn NYC around, economically and crime-wise, and handle 9-11, give him some credit. And he's Catholic. What's a little indiscretion to get the job done? Watch the interviews (edited) on CBS. Chris Matthews has been on ignore from many years ago.

Opinionator, the most strange and secretive 'religious' denomination is on the streets of Hyannis. Now that's Camelot.

You gotta admit, we are lucky (as opposed to Blessed) to live here. Every election or two we get to watch our governor or senator expose themselves to the national glare, lose, hide out for a few months or years while the sting goes away, then resurface to give the next guy advice on how to win, as the Duke did this morning with Obama, as if Obama needs Hairspray as a ward healer...

Capemom: Catholics have beliefs which are strange to many non-believers but they are not secretive or hidden; in fact with billions believing there are almost no secrets.

Capemom...can I add one to your list?

While attending a Catholic grammar school I was constantly told by the clergy that my Protestant friends would go to hell.

My friends grew up on the same street. We played sports together, dated and were very close. They all grew up to be charitable leaders of the community.

Opinionator...do you believe in this strange belief?
