Rep says he'll stop Wamp casino, Senator says they can open one legally tomorrow
“They can open a casino tomorrow with Class 2 machines and table games because we have (table games), they can do them" - Morrissey MIDDLEBORO— Casino nights held by churches and charities have given the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe the right to have table games, says a lawmaker who testified at this week's pro-casino hearing held in Boston.
“The Indians have the power to open a full-blown casino,” said state Sen. Michael W. Morrissey, D-Quincy, with table games, dice and blackjack, but not Class 3 slot machines.
Morrissey said a high-roller knows the difference between Class 2 and Class 3 slot machines, but the average gambler would not notice.
He said the distinction is blurred. Class 2 slots are glorified bingo machines at which players play each other. In Class 3 slots, the player bets the house... Brockton Enterprise.

State rep vows to fight Middleboro casino
“I will not support the casino that's proposed in Middleboro ... it's a bad site, it's a bad deal.” -Rep. Carter
LAKEVILLE— After meeting Wednesday with representatives of many area communities, state Rep. Thomas J. Calter, D-Kingston, said he will fight at every turn a tribal casino proposed for Middleboro. At the same meeting, Middleboro came looking again for a seat on the Regional Task Force on Casino Impacts, but the panel would not let the town sit at the table.
Middleboro Selectman Patrick E. Rogers made another personal plea to join the task force, but the task force board took no action on his request. Following the meeting, Calter said he has received “thousands” of calls in opposition to the planned Mashpee Wampanoag tribal casino off Route 44 in Middleboro... Brockton Enterprise.

"Lotto is abandoning its plan to move the casino to the heart of some of the poorest neighbourhoods. The social problem is real. This is a neighbourhood which has a lot of problems, social problems, drugs, unemployment, and things like that. We agree that there's a risk there to be more a problem than a solution."
"It became known in 1996 that dozens of employees at the local casino had criminal records, and that some had connections to organized crime. Newspaper advertisements for services-many of which are run by gangs-tripled during the casino's first year of operation."
