Will the real Gayle Andrews please stand up?

By Peter Kenney

Gayle Andrews is a mysterious presence at the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council offices. She is a tribe member and a paid employee of the council. But exactly what she does is unclear. A source, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells WampaGate that Gayle Andrews is not the sort of person one would want to do business with. Florida court records and even prominent black business people seem to agree.

Reporting from Tallahassee, this is Gayle Andrews,
From 1973 until 1989 she covered the Florida state capitol as a reporter for WCTV, the local CBS affiliate in Tallahassee. Gayle Andrews was someone to be reckoned with. Then she struck out on her and became a self-proclaimed media consultant for political figures and candidates. She did business, based in Tallahassee, as Andrews Plus. Perhaps she should have named her firm Andrews Minus, because she is deep in debt, at least in Florida. Her former office landlord is pursuing her for substantial back rents. Andrews also operated and then closed a restaurant named J. Drewsy's in the same building that housed her media firm.

Gayle Andrews, media consulting power
Between 2002 and 2006, democrats in Florida reportedly spent $27 million on media for their campaigns and Gayle Andrews was touting herself as catering to black candidates as a media consulting power. According to Charles Cherry, head of the Florida Black Owned Media Coalition (FBOMC), Andrews' firm spent only $23,000 with black-owned media during those same four years. He described her business with black-owned media as "crumbs" in a statement made to the media in the Tallahassee/Tampa Bay area on September 29, 2006 when he declared a boycott by FBOMC members. Coalition members thereafter returned checks from Andrews Plus and refused to do business with her or her firm. At the time, Andrews was a prominent presence in the campaign of Governor Jim Davis, whose campaign had one thing in common with Andrews ... neither returned calls from Florida media asking for comment on the FBOMC charges and boycott.

Gayle Andrews: Mashpee or Aquinnah?
While Andrews lived and worked in Florida she identified herself as black -- African American -- and she traded on that racial identity exclusively even though she was also a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. At one point -- before the Mashpee had gained federal recognition -- Andrews and her mother applied for membership in the Aquinnah (Gay Head) Wampanoag tribe and were accepted. (See 12/04/07 WampaGate link at the bottom) Andrews surrendered her Mashpee membership. Suspicions arose within the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe over the Andrews' historical material and genealogy submitted in support of their application. A year-long investigation resulted in their expulsion from the tribe.

Finally, the real Gayle
It was not long after the meltdown in Florida that Gayle Andrews rediscovered her true heritage and came home to Mashpee. During the Glenn Marshall regime as chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribal council she was granted Mashpee membership again. It should be noted that her Mashpee credentials appear sound. She is a Peters. Ironically, the senior surviving member of the Peters family/clan, Amelia Bingham, Andrews' Aunt, has been shunned while Andrews has been -- not only readmitted -- but hired by the tribe and given what appears to be a position of influence in tribal affairs.

Whose default is it?
According to several tribe members, she found employment doing media and other undisclosed work for the tribe at $6,000 per month, enough to live comfortably in a rented house in Mashpee but not enough to pay her Florida debts. Court records posted by Leon County on the Web show judgments against Andrews totaling more than $16,000 and there is the lingering matter of the reported $50,000 she owes her former landlord, Tallahassee Highpoint Partners, in whose property Andrews had housed not only her office but her failed restaurant, J Drewsey's. One interesting aspect of the judgments against Andrews is that she appears to have defaulted, not shown up for the cases, on a routine basis.

Late last year Andrews was stripped of her lobbying credentials by the state of Florida due to her failure to pay a few hundred dollars as an annual registration fee. Andrews was quoted recently in Cape Cod media as saying that she simply did not pay the fee because she did not intend to return to Florida or to lobbying activities there. Fair enough. Is that the same reason she has not paid her Florida debts?

An image problem
Is her image the one the Mashpee Wampanoags want to portray to the world? In Florida she was black. Before Mashpee recognition she denounced her actual Mashpee heritage in favor of Aquinnah identity. Now she is again a Mashpee.

Will the real Gayle Andrews/Thornton/Marcellino/ Chamberlain please stand up? (More on the various last names Gayle Andrews has used in future pieces.)

And stand over there beside Deval Custer.

Sounds like Gayle Andrews is going to fit in just fine at the TC with those other crooked, ignorant, uneducated liars. Hey Peter, Do you really think Shawn Hendricks really gives a you know what about what negative things are written about him? He's a fisherman, not a businessman. Has he ever taken even ONE college course? Gym class, anything!? As a child, do you think he ever dreamed of being in a leadership position. NO! That's why he's failing at it and being used as a puppet by the investors. He thinks that's proper business practice because he is not educated enough to know how business should be conducted. The other TC members are no better. They're falling right in line. Forked toungs. Great job Aaron. The people of this Tribe have got to be smarter than this, electing these incompetents into office. February '09 will determine the true intelligence of this Tribe when they determine who is elected into office. Let's not fail again. Hendricks supporters please respond, it adds validity to my point.

Let's face the facts here...As a long time resident of Mashpee( and formerly Boston, NYC, &Providence), I have worked with, and befriended, people of all race/color/and sexual persuasions..That being said, there is a loud and vocal minority( no pun intended) from all the above that beleive any question on their moral or principal behavior is racist or homophobic, whatever!!!
Just because you are a Wampanoag does not mean you are above reproach..period!

Unfortunately the tribe has adopted a corrupt attitude towards their own who question authority and, as in any matter of family, when the almighty dollar is at stake, all bets are off!

Human greed always erupts as evident in the current Mashpee tribes situation..

What! No comments from the almighty Hendricks fan base. Could it be that he has none. Probably not, money & promises go a long way. Come on there has to be some Shawn Hendricks supporters out there. How about Gayle Andrews? Anyone have anything good to say about her? Well, like I said yesterday, we will have the opportunity this time next year to show everyone we have smart people in this Tribe when the entire Council gets replaced. Doing & saying nothing is just as bad as being corrupt & ignorant.

Stillawamp- Are you sure about that? The tribe needs to be a whole, if you have a problem you need to educate others on your issue. While I readily admit I do not know all details of this rift I think it is juvenile and malicious to badmouth the tribe on a public forum. If the council is so corrupt please tell me and others why you feel that way. I also must say I do not think any tribal member has the right to push the old land suit. The claims you make are petty and provide no facts. As for Gayle Andrews while this Kenney bit claims alot of negetivity in her professional life it says nothing about her feelings on the tribe and her heritage. I would really like to know why Mr Kenney feels the need to post his opinions at times without any facts here. Frankly I rather hear from tribal members on all sides than someone who is not even a member. Maybe then we can come together and figure out and fix these issues in the meantime I see no good coming from nitpicking these issues on forums where there is no chance of it being resolved.

Dear proudtobewamp23, you can't be so out of touch that you don't know about the shunned members being overwhelmingly voted back in by the Tribal body. In addition, the Chief (a great man) has openly stated that the shunning be lifted as did the Medicine Man. Then there is the issue of the poor woman who was fired over a stamp and then not given her due process to the appeal process. From what I understand, the TC violated their own codes of conduct and their own Constitution to do it. Don't dare have an opinion other than the one they want you to have. Oviously you have it. How about the mysterious addition of hundreds of "Hendricks" to the Tribal roles without proving their lineage? Are we Pequots now? How about the disappearence of entire families off of the roles in order not being able to case a vote for Darryl Frye? Are you one of the people who was glad to see Glenn Marshall and gave him a big,fat hug? What promises have been made to you? I agree with you on one issue. Peter Kenney is anti-casino, therefore he will dig up anything to discredit the Tribe. Cont.

A new Chairman would also face his judgemental scrutiny. His main goal is to make sure that the Tribe is not allowed to build a Casino in his backyard by any means necessary. That is why we need leadership who can do things the right way. That is not happening right now. We have educated people in this Tribe who can be effective leaders. We can get better leaders than "Fishermen" who have no experience in "real world" issues. That is why absentee ballots are not wanted by Hendricks and Pocknett. Why would they want people working in private industry throughout the country voting for their leadership. The Chair and Vice Chair know if those people are allowed to vote from CA,FL,DC and beyond, they would not stand a chance. They can't make promises to people they can't reach. I'm done venting, for now.

I’ll be glad to defend Shawn. What I see is a man that devotes considerable amounts of his time, not only to his own kids, but to other people’s kids as well. He’s coached my boy at various times when he was a member of the Mashpee Little League, both during the regular season and during the extended All Star season. I’ve seen him coach other sports as well. His son is an extraordinary athlete, do you think that’s an accident or is he lucky enough to have a father that’s involved in him and that cares? In this man’s humble opinion, a true measure of a man is someone that takes the time and the effort to teach something like athletics and sportsmanship to impressionable youth. In my personal dealings with Shawn I find him to be a fair minded and intelligent man. Someone I’d be proud to call my friend. Someone I’d trust with my son. The character assassination that goes on in this blog is just not justified.

proudtobewamp23: My viewpoint. I do think that it is ironic that Gayle and others who complain about badmouthing the tribe on public forums are the same group of people who have been maliciously badmouthing tribal members on public forums (ie wampfacts). I don’t believe the entire council is corrupt, but do believe that the officers of the council are. Look at the clear evidence. Look at all of the unauthorized positions like Gayle’s pr position or the security team which have never been approved by the tribe’s governing body (tribal council).

Look at all of the real estate, political contributions, cars, boats, toys and personal companies that former chair, current chair, vice chair, secretary and others possess. There will not be any review of any finance documents by anyone inside the tribe. That would be self incrimination. Even the dumbest of the officers have been advised by their lawyers of that action.

arms_akimbo,
You are so right about Shawn and his famiy. With all that's going on with the tribe he still finds time to volunteer his services for basketball, football and baseball. Maybe some tribal members don't agree with the way he runs the tribe but he is really a good person and a great father.
Stillawamp, as for the Shunned members why should we let them back in? If you was at the meeting yesterday they made a big scene for no reason. They knew they couldn't get in the meeting they just went there to cause problems. That's why they're shunned now. As for them getting voted back in that wasn't even a real meeting no one knew it was going to be voted on that night. Most of people there were their suppoters. A lot of tribal members didn't go because they're sick of hearing about it. So you know I don't agree with everything Council does but the tribe did vote them in!

arms_akimbo: I’m happy that you have had nothing but positive experiences with Shawn as a great parent. That’s an important attribute that all should seek to obtain. Another true measure of a man is someone who holds himself to the high ethical and moral standards. In my humble opinion, Shawn does not unfortunately conduct himself with much ethics or morals.

I respectfully disagree with your statement that this blog is a character assassination but more of a testament of what others have witness in his conduct and character. Greed and money can corrupt the best of people. Of course even if certain people are eventually removed they are all set (the investors have ensured that). It is very important for investors to control the Marshall gang’s actions to ensure that blind-folds are kept on all tribal members.

I am just hoping that in the end, the tribe will be able to reverse some of the damage.

Still-Frankly the only people I have seen negativly speak about the tribe is the Binghams themselves they do alot of name-calling to the press without any facts Steven speaks in only cliches and metaphors. I can not respect that or that they want to take away private land in the area? How can you support that? I am not one to greet Marshall with a "big hug" as you put it so juvenile. I don't even know him personally and I do not respect his poor choices on how he represented himself, nor does that discredit Shawn. I think he is trying under extremely difficult circumstances. I am not for a casino by any means necessary caution is key and I am personally familiar with many Pequots and while few are of very distant lineage we should not put them in the assumed claim you did. I think the fact that Shawn is a fisherman should not be held against him does that make him any less educated on the history of our tribe? Or take away his inability to speak to members and receive their opinions on what our future should be? This tribe needs to sit and talk the first step is to stop this nonsense

Glad to hear Shawn can run Pop Warner football team or Church league hoops squad. I am also glad to hear he is a great father. For that I commend him. I also know many other great fathers who were business failures and great busnessmen who were lousy fathers. Let's not confuse athletic prowess with running a government and being a leader. Shawn has his marching orders and he follows them loyally. He hires his convicted felon cousins to be the Tribe's security personnel. We can do better.

I can agree with doing away with the security team. I don’t think that one was thought out by ANYONE on the council. As far as the shunned members, they made their beds, now let them lay in it. I don’t agree with what they did and they should be banished for good, the seven years is not good enough. Other tribes have banishment in their constitution, why shouldn’t we? They were suing every council member individually and running back and forth to the press with nonsense. Sunday being a great example, they continuing running. I thought it was just the Bingham’s behind the most recent drama but it seems to be all 4…

mashpee29 [Member] writes:
On another note, the security issues needs to be resolved. I’m sure it’s a matter of time before someone brings the issue to the table, whether it’s to the public or the council. Shawn the security team needs to be re-appointment. Please do a CORI check on these men. It’s not right! Outside security company or not; no reputable security company is hiring individuals with an existing felony charge in the last 5 years. If the council men and women have to agree to a CORI why shouldn’t security, they are protecting our grounds and members?

As for Shawn, he has demonstrated that he is not qualified to lead this tribe. It's too big for him to wrap his arms around. It would be different if he had a strong advisory council, but he's taking direction from the same people. I'm sure he's a nice guy and very good with children and should stick to instructing martial arts or coaching sports. Know your limitations, stop milking the tribe and make room for someone who has the capabilities to bring the tribe together, move forward and someone who has the tribes best interest at heart.

It is the least they should expect after nearly 400 years of abuse and persecution by non-Indian invaders.

If you actually believe I am anti-casino...you have not been reading what I have been wrinting for nearly a year. Actually, I think a smaler casino in Mashpee, catering to the uppercrust of the gambling world would be great. And I bet that many of its regular patrons would be the Mashpee swells who now say they want the tribe to guarantee that there will be no casino in town.

If you think Gayle Andrews' known hsitory helps the tribe's image, think again. As for why I am interested in her history; if we neighbors of the Mahpee are expected to respect your tribal laws and heritage, we also have a right to be curious about someoen who has apparently been given a position of power within the tirbe whose perosnal history of loyalty to her own heritage is so checkered. In Florida Andrews was black. Back here she actuall disavowed gher Mashpee heritage and somehow was admitted as an Aquinnah, only to be ousted by that tribe when the material and claims she submitted with her application were shown to be false...not
just wrong but false.

Don't wory about what I think....worrry about how thses things look to the BIA and the governor and town officials in places like Midleboro. The tribe has finally gained recognition...now a few at the top are tarnishing the tribe's image. That is what counts.

Peter, For someone who commentates in a local paper you really should check for spelling errors. All I can really say in response is, prove it. Who are your sources? What documentation did you receive your claims from? I think anyone can say anything but if you want people to respect what you seem to be trying to "uncover" you need to be able to back up your word. Your articles are so much in support of the Binghams' and their plight. They have said themselves to the local media their stance on the "old land deal"... their wrong. I think my tribe needs to unite and sort out their issues no matter what they may be, without our "neighbors" commenting on what they speculate we are. My family is comprised of really wonderful people and I am proud of who I am. People need to realize the damage that can be with only words.

proudtobewamp23: You really need to take off those blinders. How much proof does one need to not see the damage that someone like Gayle, in such a short time, has done to this wonderful tribe. This article is not about the Bingham’s plight or their rightful opinion towards the “land suit”. I may not agree with their pursuit of the land claim, but they have every right and justification to do what they believe is in the best interest of the entire tribe.
Yes, yes, I know, if your in support of Glenn, Shawn, David, Desiree and others then every comment / article about anyone associated with them is just hearse, is because of the Bingham’s plight, or just doesn’t matter because its from an outsider. When will you and others realize that the damage that Glenn, Shawn, David, Desiree and others have and continue to do to the tribe has irreversible consequences?

In years to come the investors will be gone and will be sitting on a nest egg that was given to them by corrupt tribal officers, damage that is irreversible. Read about all the facts that have shown how much the investors have already taken from the Mohegans, have gone against the Narragansetts and eventually have raped from the Wampanoags just like Glenn and gang.

But Shawn, David and Desiree and others? Who are your claimed others and just what did they do to the tribe to have "irreversible consequences"? As for the investors business is business and yes the deal with the mohegans in particular might not have been the best but I know alot of Mohegan members personally and they still enjoy their fianancial gains from casino profits believe me. The Mohegan Tribe is fianancially secure when alot of them grew up in middle or lower class families, I grew up in Montville so I know. I don't feel that the investors are pulling the strings as people like to say. Also they did not disrespect Vernon Lopez, he might have called for something but that is why we have the council.
