Climate change may destroy fishing industry; CCBLer throws at 98 mph

A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you're talking renewable energy
Centrica mulls huge offshore windfarms investment British Gas parent company
Centrica said on Thursday it was evaluating a potential multi-billion pound increase in investment in renewable energy, largely targeted at offshore turbines. The move would help Britain achieve ambitious goals of producing 33 gigawatts of electricity from offshore wind by 2020, enough to power every UK home, at an overall cost of around 70 billion pounds ($136 billion).  Centrica Chief Executive Sam Laidlaw told reporters that as Britain's largest residential electricity supplier, with around 23 percent of the market, the company had an "important role to play." "It is going to require heavy investment," he added.
Centrica already plans to build around 1.5 gigawatts of renewable generation with partners at a cost of around 3 billion pounds...  UPI.
CCBL pitcher approaching 100 mph
Aaron Crow pitched for Falmouth

When Missouri right-hander Aaron Crow touched 98 mph with his fastball in the Cape Cod League this summer, it wasn't something his college coach had forecasted for him earlier in his career.

aaroncrow_1868_194Crow stepped into Missouri's starting rotation his freshman year in 2006, pitching in the high 80s with his fastball that usually topped out around 90 mph.

UN report: Climate changes threatens vital fishing grounds

Overfishing, pollution and climate change are combining to create a deadly environment for commercial fish stocks, according to a new report from the United Nations.  The report (In Dead Water),released today from the U.N. Environment Program, found a grim confluence of events. The researchers found that climate change is compounding other problems, like pollution and overfishing, as rising temperatures lead to coral bleaching and shifts in ocean currents that harm the ocean habitat on which fish depend.

Read the reportThe worst concentration of problems is in 10 to 15 percent of the oceans -- most in areas that include fishing grounds responsible for half of the world's fish catch, according to the report. Researchers said the concentration is much higher than previous studies have estimated.

"We are getting more and more alarming signals of dramatic changes in the oceans," said Christian Nelleman, who led the team that drafted the report.

The report was released today during UNEP's governing council meeting in Monaco, the largest gathering of environment ministers since the climate conference in Bali two months ago.
