The 2008 Nader: Unsafe at any election

George W. Bush didn't cause 4,000 American troops to die, Ralph Nader did
How his ego caused the worse foreign adventure in U.S. history

nadee_divide_307By Walter Brooks

If Ralph Nader had not decided his ego was more important than America's safety, Al Gore would have been elected President in 2000 and George W. Bush and his neo-con maniacs could not have invaded the Middle East and turned half the world against our country and put our nation in jeopardy for decades to come.

And the bastard wants to do it again.

John McCain at his most militant would never have invaded Iraq.  He has said so many times.

Hillary Clinton could not have abetted Bush & his fanatics if Al Gore was President instead.

Barack Obama voted against the illegal war at every chance he had, even when the war was "popular" and he was alone against the mob.

So the next time you hear someone  blame Bush for our current national shame, correct them.

Ralph Nader is America's Public Enemy #1, again.

Seriously, why can't the guy just think pragmatically for the sake of the country and further his agenda by continuing his work as an activist.

He's running because all the others are sell-outs to big business....Obama included!(no caps on credit card %?)
How you can say it was Nader's fault George Bush invaded Iraq is beyond me.
And for that matter, Al Gore DID win the election! And it wasn't Nader who took it away, it was Katherine Harris, Jeb Bush and the Florida Supreme Court.
Nader is right...this country needs more than two choices to vote for.You got big business one and big business two.
Democrat/Republican...can't we have more choices that that?

I wonder how much gas would cost today if we had not invaded Iraq. I wonder how much the Arabs would charge for oil if America was energy independent with renewables.

The writer makes the quote,”illegal war “ What is so illegal about the war? Congress gave it authorization to the President. The term illegal war is right from the Democratic Party propaganda. Democrats and Republicans voted to authorize this war. The writer and the Democrats should support our brave troops and give them the support they really need instead of making false quotes that the war is illegal.

Walter,

Didn't Al Qaeda plan the 9/11 attack well before Bush was President? Around the time perhaps that Bill Clinton was President? So I guess our nation was "under attack" well before Bush. And since the Congress "authorized" war, we haven't had a single domestic terrorist attack in over six years.

bittersweet, the Florida Supreme Court ordered a statewide manual recount, as sought by Gore; the US Supreme Court overturned the ruling.

If only Gore won his home state, all of that unpleasantness could have been avoided.

Nearly eight years later and yet we whine...As Belichick would say, "It is what it is." Al Gore's loss is the responsibility of Al Gore. Period. Besides, can anyone out there really say (or type) with a straight face that you would have felt better with Al Gore standing on that pile of rubbgle in NYC after 9-11. This refrain is as tired as your griping about the election, I know, but who among us is not thankful that W. was the man on that day?

Walter, when did McCain "at his most militant" - or any other time for that matter - ever say he would not have invaded Iraq?

Wally - nice piece, very nice. And, sit down for this...you and I had the same thoughts about Nader. While I am a devout political agnostic and think both parties are criminal conspiracies, I do find Nader's jumping into the fray a bizarre and troubling exercise in egocentricity. If one believes that a hard fought campaign between two candidates who present to voters clear differences Nader's entry can only be seen as harmful to the process itself.

As for all the rest of it...if McCain would have attacked anyone he would have attacked Afghanistan where the Taliban and Bin Laden himself were actually massed and based. U.S. failures vis-a-vis the Axis of Evil are nearly institutionalized in our government and blame covers everyone from Bush senior through W. Clinton was no bargain: more troops died under his presidency than under W's. We still don't have enough intelligence types who so much as speak the languages of folks on whom we are trying to spy.

Against all this, what is Nader thinking?

PS Walter.....

As my mother said of the election debacle in her district in Florida, "Those people wouldn't tolerate this crap if it happened at a BINGO game."

And, let's not forget the Clinton/Gore efforts to disallow every absentee ballot executed by more than 50,000 American service men and women stationed oversees.

As I said....CRIMINAL CONSPIRACIES.

That an educated man would think that an anti-corporate philosophy is a plausible basis for national governance is really bizarre.

And I agree with Walter -- if he gets his 3% and this election results in a squeaker McCain victory (a big IF), he will have achieved what? The opposite of his objective?

nadar was, past tense, such a force for right versus might. see the 'unreasonable man' documentary. unfortunately, nadar had a stroke, truly, and he has lost all support.

all of his supporters, even the ones who made their careers off of him, bailed. he is too extreme. but he did so much good. that is his legacy.

Nader will be less significant this time around than he was in 2004. After losing the last two presidential elections, those left of center are even less inclined to waste their votes on a third-party quixotic.

ifawsupporter [Member] writes:
not less significant. insignificant. having voted for reagan, and bush i and ii, that is my responsibility. but there is great appreciation for 'consumer reports,' and what nadar did to raise awareness on a plethora of issues; he's just not presidential material, like michael moore. they bait you, and make you think. who to vote for this year? not up for discussion. i'd vote for rice, but she's not running.

The accident happened right in front of my house. People...PLEASE.....Depot Street is NOT the Indianapolis Speedway! The speed limit is 30 mph for a reason. There are no sidewalks and the road is heavily traveled, especially by the large trucks from Robert Our, etc. The road is also very deceiving, as where the accident occurred there is a slight curve and rise in the road. You are airborne if you go too fast. This is not the first fatal crash on this stretch of road.
