No Sale Sign

NO SALE sign for alot of businesses along Route 28 in Yarmouth?

Take a drive down Route 28 in Yarmouth this week and you'll start to see why we're all getting tired with the debate about Cape Wind.  In anticipation of the MMS hearing in Yarmouth tomorrow, the Alliance to Save the Sound (ASS) has decided to remind the great uninformed that there still exists ...an opposition. Along with the lame last ditch efforts by the Cape Cod Chamber and the Cape Cod Times, they fail to see what has been happening in the community.

With every hurdle that Cape Wind clears to permitting their project, the more people come out in favor of it. The most recent poll shows that today 3 out of 4 residents of Cape Cod support Cape Wind.

So with the growing acceptance of the project what can these businesses be thinking advertising their opposition to the project on their front lawns?  Can their business, in the middle of a recession, be that good that they can afford to alienate any of their customers?

It's not a question of free speech, it's a question of common (dollars and) sense.   Christy's now charges $3.15 for both a gallon of gas and a gallon of milk. Can he really afford to turn a Not for Sale sign on the street into a no sale at the cash register?

I never understood why ANY business would deliberately irritate well over half of their customers. Like the vast majority of Cape Codders who don't have ocean views, I favor the wind farm and I will NEVER spend money at a commercial enterprise which opposes this issue.

Don't these businesses realize that us poor folks resent them using their wealth and power to intimidate voters? Why would ANYONE do business with such idiots?

The issue has always been "power vs. people". Ted Kennedy's power and the wealthy shore front property owners vs. anything which may intrude on their please... like a renewable wind farm to generate energy NOT imported from Arabia.

I'm willing to bet that the owners of these businesses are looking across the water from their sun splashed living room windows today as they read this latest rain on their parade report. They have money and probably have homes right on the water overlooking the sound.

Yo Christy!
Golly Gee Mr. No $ for CAPE WIND from tax payers "pockets" to help pay for renewable energy projects...
According to the Times piece on B.B.Smiths wind turbine business from which you have bought a few from -
Y.O.U. - Are going to recieve monies from the CONSUMER FUNDED (ie TAX SUBSIDIES) from Mass Tech Collaboratives funds.
In total... The subsidies you will recieve will pay for 1/2 the cost of each turbine.
Based on that...
The you nor the public should have a problem with CAPE WIND's turbines being "subsidized" from the publics tax dole.
But, hey... That's not the case.
CAPE WIND will recieve no such incentive. They will get TAX BREAKS...
While Y.O.U. get the Doe-Ray-Me in your pocket!
What's with that???
RU going to donate your savings/subsidy to charity?

Both gas and food prices continue to go up with the price of oil. Fewer people go out to eat and fewer will come to the Cape this summer.
The one thing that we could do to stave off higher prices is the one thing that these businesses oppose. And every extra nickel Christy gets he gives to the Alliance. What an insult.

Thanks for listing us three times. you do what you believe is right. We are not accepting any tax credits form any agency with regard to our turbines. we will do our very best to offer goods and services to our customers. Can not believe the personal attacks and misinformation that some people stoop to in attacking those who speak their positions. That is why people despise the political process.

Read what it says above in "About this Blog": "Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought..." Those who advocate shunning the businesses who are on the "wrong" side of the wind farm issue are luxuriating in the comfort of their opinion, shrinking from the discomfort of thought.

hamalcar,tron44, I've been at this place before in 2001 when ever newspaper in metro boston and the Cape Cod Times printed editorials day after day demanding my removal from the Turnpike Boards for questioning the Big Dig and Bechtel's performance. It was politically correct to go along with the waste, fraud, corruption and abuse of Taxpayer's money because boston was getting THE state-of-the-art project; the biggest public works project in the history of the United States. To question anything brought out all the usual groups--just like the Cape Wind issue. The facts degenerate into personal attacks. My point is that IF you liked the Big Dig, you'll love Cape Wind. So speak your mind and speak truth to power. Many did in the 1770's and look where that took us. Who cares about personal insults, go ahead-put us all who dare to question Cape Wind on a list to boycott. That's what the First Amendment is all about. knock yourselves out. in the meantime you can buy milk $1 less a gallon than at the supermarket and gas is 10cents off with a stop and shop gas coupon. christy

Solon [Member] writes:
C'mon, Christy, nobody personally insulted you in the above comments. They just expressed their opinions, which differ from yours. Must you always make yourself a victim when somebody disagrees with you?

And your allusion to the "1770s," to our heroes of the American Revolution, is way out of line. Do you really consider yourself on a par with them because you oppose the wind farm? Maybe if you cross Nantucket Sound standing up in a rowboat, I'll cut you some slack.

And as for fear that your business may be boycotted, that most likely won't happen. People are mainly creatures of habit and will continue to shop and do business in the same places. So stop losing sleep over your pennies and take the comments in the way they were intended.

I do recall that the ones speaking "truth to power" in '02,'03,'04,'05,'06, ... were the supporters of Cape Wind. How things have changed. Now that the opposition is in the minority, they're the ones speaking the truth? Give me a break! The Alliance is still selling the same old lies, but the people aren't buying.

Wow! What a lot of folks who have no idea of the economic truth of Cape Wind - it will raise electric rates substantially, not lower them! See Appendix F of the MMS DEIS.

By the way, why the ridiculous character attacks on businesses speaking their minds? If you have anything other than what you offer herein, go to the MMS meeting in your area and say it.All commenters welcome IF there are facts, rather than emotions, to present.

Why not call the Alliance by its real name (Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound) and acronym (APNS)rather than the smart ass comment in the article?
03/10/08 @ 1:34 pm
tron44 [Member] writes:
Solon, you have your blinders on. How you can read the comments above and tell Christy he was not personally insulted is beyond belief. So you think that calling for a boycott of businesses that have an opinion different than yours is a high-minded approach to the debate? Telling Christy not to fear the boycott because people probably won't change their behavior is like telling someone not to worry when they are being shot at because the shooter will probably miss. The intent is there. As for the boycott, it is incredibly puerile.

So, let me get this straight...it's OK for the pro-windustrial contingent to speak their minds, but not OK for those who oppose the taking of something that belongs to all of us? What a bunch of hypocrites you people are. And by the way Christy -- I have and always will be a customer. Thank you for your willingness to suffer the various insults lobbed at you, and for standing up for Nantucket Sound and the many of us who oppose it's industrialization.

Christy..as you well know about the behind the scenes dealings(akaBig Dig), I am sure you are correct( once the dust settles and the Quixote Windmills are generating the proposed 75% of our electric needs)about the actual costs to all of us!
Probably a done deal..let em have their windmills and we'll see what our rates are then..never mind the corruption that will eventually surface..like the Big Dig.....thanx

As we trade barbs across the net, the real money makers will laugh all the way at our expense on both sides of this issue!
I was privy (back in R.I.)to many state legislators (who told me in confidence)that whenever a state project/bill/etc comes to the people as 'it's for the people' it really means for the contractors and state officials pockets..just as the 'big dig' and now the 'WIND FARM'.."for the environment, against big oil, against global warming>>."...just another boondoggle with the right buzz words to work all of us into a frenzy and at each others throats.....just wait and see...
