Another Cape priest accused; Wellfleet home owner in new child porn charges

Jailed former prof faces new child-porn charges
Ward allegedly lied to authorities, shipped and transported porn

Former marketing professor Scott Ward was indicted last Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on one count of making false statements to the State Department and two counts of transporting and shipping child pornography. He is already serving a 15-year sentence for producing child pornography for importation into the United States. Ward, 65, pleaded guilty to that charge last year in federal court in Virginia.

He was arrested at Dulles International Airport in August 2006, when customs officials found sexually explicit images of a 16-year-old boy on Ward's laptop and on DVD's during a routine luggage check.  If convicted of the latest charges, Ward faces a mandatory sentence of 15 to 45 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $750,000 and $300 in other charges, according to the indictment filed by U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan.

Ward had a house in Fortaleza, Brazil, where he reportedly met the victim and the victim's family. He allegedly persuaded the victim to participate in sexual activities by giving gifts and money to the boy and his mother, who are described as "destitute" in the indictment.  During the summer of 2006, Ward attempted to secure a visa so the victim and his family could travel to Ward's house on Cape Cod, Mass. The State Department originally denied the visa, fearing the boy and his family would attempt to stay in the United States...  Daily Pennsylvanian

Former New Bedford, Cape pastor removed from ministry amid sex probe
Was pastor at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Provincetown from 1987 to 1992

A Catholic priest who served as pastor of a New Bedford church i n the mid-1980s has been removed from the ministry after an investigation into alleged sexual abuse in Taunton 29 years ago.  No criminal charges have been filed against the Rev. Bento R. Fraga, but notice of allegation has been sent to district attorneys in Barnstable and Bristol counties, where Fraga served in churches from 1956 to 2006.

The Fall River diocese includes much of Southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands.  Fraga worked in the Fall River diocese more than 50 years. He was pastor of St. John the Baptist Church in New Bedford from 1985 to 1987.

Fraga was pastor at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Provincetown from 1987 to 1992. No allegations arising out of his time in Provincetown have been made to the diocese to date, according to diocesan spokesman John Kearns...  Standard-Times

I am in no way trying to defend the alleged perp, or perv as the case may be, but a "routine luggage check" now includes searching the files on your laptop computer? Is this really routine? I'm not an international air traveler so I have no idea? Anyone?

Ward had a 1993 case involving him soliciting sex from a teenage boy. That probably got him flagged, and they were probably waiting to pounce on him when he returned to the states.

Or Brazil did the illegal search (which may be legal there), and passed a tip onto US authorities.
