Man killed in Falmouth blaze
Two others, several firefighters injured

Firefighters battle an attic fire in Falmouth that killed one person and injured several others.

FALMOUTH - At approx 1:30 p.m. Falmouth Fire/Rescue units were called to a reported house fire at 28 Deer Run Lane in the Fiddler's Cove neighborhood of North Falmouth.

There was a report of a person trapped in the attic with fire and smoke. Firefighters arrived to the 3 story wood frame structure under construction with smoke showing.

They were able to remove the victim later identified as 41-year old Robery Cowhey of Springfield from the attic area and performed CPR before transporting him to Falmouth Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two other workers and several firefighters involved in the rescue needed medical assistance on the scene. Some were transported to the hospital with apparent smoke inhalation. The fire in the attic required 2nd floor windows to be opened, with the upper floor's fixed windows broken out and the roof ventilated. Fire and ambulance units from Mashpee, Cotuit, Otis and as far away as Hyannis responded to Falmouth for station coverage and Mashpee sent personnel to the scene to support Falmouth firefighters.

Fire units were still on the scene at 4:10 p.m. as overhaul and investigation was underway. They also had to assure the fire in the attic insulation which was being sprayed into place when the fire occurred was completely extinguished after it rekindled once.

Falmouth officials were joined by the State Fire Marshall and OSHA in the investigation into the exact cause of the fire.

House damaged by fire in Bourne
BOURNE
- Fire damaged a house in the Pocasset section of Bourne late Saturday afternoon. Flames were visable from the second floor of 44 Wenaumet Bluffs Road when firefighters arrived about 5 p.m. The fire was quickly knocked down and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is believed to have been caused by the heater on a waterbed that had no water in it. Power had apparently just been restored to the seasonal residence.

Ford vs Jeep in South Dennis rear-ender

Dennis paramedics carefully transfer the driver to a stretcher.
SOUTH DENNIS - Around 10:26 a.m. Saturday, the combination of a rain-slick roadway and driver inattention led to a rear-end collision near the intersection of Old Bass River Road and Bob Crowell Road that sent one to the hospital. A Jeep Grand Cherokee headed south on Old Bass had stopped prior to the intersection of Bob Crowell Road to enable a large tractor-trailer to make the turn onto Old Bass headed north. A Ford Focus following the Jeep failed to stop in time and slammed into the Jeep. The force of the collision deployed the Ford's airbags. Dennis paramedics extricated the male driver, the only occupant of the Ford, and transported him to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. The female Jeep driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was uninjured. The Ford's front end was badly damaged and the Jeep's body was deformed by the impact. Saturday morning traffic on Old Bass River Road built up quickly as the busy north-south road was reduced to one lane. Story and photos by Kevin Morley.

The road was closed while rescuers extricated the driver, who was taken to CCH with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police at the scene said is appeared a combination of wet roads, speed and the driver braking to miss a squirrel, caused the vehicle to skid and hit the pole. A flat bed had to be called to remove the wreck. Story and photo by Frank Paparo.
