CWN feature story: New Provincetown Police Chief Jeff Jaran on the record
PROVINCETOWN - Provincetown's new police chief Jeff Jaran took control of the department this past Monday. On Thursday he graciously took a few minutes from his hectic schedule to talk with CWN. Chief Jaran was on the job for some 20 years in New Hampshire, most recently as Chief in Bow and could have retired in NH but he says his love of law enforcement sent him looking for new opportunities. Growing up on the North Shore of Massachusetts he adds he regularly visited the Cape and Provincetown and that experience along with a nudge from an old friend from his Laconia, NH days, Chief Rodney Collins of the Mashpee Police, convinced him to apply for the position in Provincetown. Jaran believes his experience in Laconia, also a popular vacation destination, will help him in town as he jumps right into the fire as the Memorial Day Weekend draws thousands of tourists into town.
The Chief says a high priority of his is employee retention in the department. The Provincetown Police Department has seen a continuing turnover of employees. He hopes to accomplish stability through training so officers can become specialized in several areas possibly including a presence on the Cape Cod Drug Task Force and the Cape's Special Operations Unit, a SWAT unit comprised of officers from Cape towns. Jaran wants to address ongoing problems in the town including preventing hate crimes after several incidents last summer and combating drug traffic in town.
On the subject of drugs in town Chief Jaran says his top priority is to recreate a detective position in the department which has been lacking for some time. He was instrumental in creating such a position in Bow, NH while chief there.
Given the tight financial times in Provincetown, Chief Jaran realizes funding some of his initiatives may prove problematic but he hopes to secure some grants and if necessary seek private support to help achieve his goals. Story and photo by Tim Caldwell.

I just hope the new chief sees that place with both eyes wide open. Nobody should have to tolerate the assaults that get broomed by Tobias.
Some new blood will do the place some good. I just hope they don't find a way to control this guy. But hopefully, he's smarter than they are. I wish him lots of luck. He's going to need it. Taming that crew is not going to be easy. Others have tried and failed. Outsiders are never accepted. Especially when reform is part of their plan. I hope Martha Coakley is keeping an eye on that place, and Truro, too.
Sounds like time for changing of the fox-guarding the chicken house. She's got a lot of work ahead of her as well.
Barnstable County should be next on that list.
Not everything comes back to Truro. Ptown Police and Truro Police cannot be compared...apples and oranges.
